Just how fast did Josh
McDougal and Lindsey Scherf run on Nov. 16th race at Van Cortlandt
Park?? ... I'm getting e-mails
asking that question. That's a difficult question to answer with any
certainty, and the best I can do is make a guess. My approach to
evaluating speed is to compare runners with each other ... since the
race was not a high school race, a group evaluation (using a graphical
solution) is not possible ... the only way to guess the relative speed
is to compare individual runners with each other ... unfortunately,
this NYRR race has only a few runners I know anything about to make a
comparison (and I really need more than a few).
Starting with the girls ... the only female runner in
the race I can compare Lindsey Scherf to is Brittney
Criscuolo (East Meadow) ... Brittney is one of the best high
school runners in NY State ... she skipped the Federation
Championships at Bowdoin Park to run in the NYRR race. Scherf ran
17:50, beating Criscuolo's 18:14 by 24 seconds ... that's very
impressive! I really don't know how well Criscuolo ran, but assuming
(and I emphasis assuming) the Criscuolo ran a speed rating in
the mid 140s (which might be reasonable based on her performances to
date), then Scherf's rating would be 8 points higher (24 seconds)
putting her in the low 150s ... that would make Scherf the 2nd fastest
girl in NY, and put her within reach of Nicole Blood. Some observers
think Scherf is better than Blood (maybe, but I need to see it first).
Looking at the boys ... Josh McDougal's time
(15:08) is sensational ... Josh has proven in the past he can run fast
times and this performance is remarkable. The only two boys in this
race I can use for comparison are his brother (Jordan) and David
Raucci (Red Hook). David is one of the top runners in Section 9
... David raced Josh in both the VCP race and previous week's race at
Saratoga Park ... At Saratoga Park on Nov 9th, Josh ran 15:04 and
David ran 16:27 ... at VCP, Josh ran 15:08 and David ran 16:17, so
David improved 14 seconds on the time difference between himself and
Josh. David Raucci ran at States at Marcus Whitman ... he finished
21st in the Class B race (17:39.7) about 1:10 behind winner Kyle Heath
(16:30) ... but in all fairness, that was an "off" race for Raucci who
would normally run about 30 seconds faster (based on his seasonal
performances) ... the day following States, Raucci ran against Josh at
Saratoga, so I assume that was not a normal-fast race for Raucci
either ... The time difference improvement between Saratoga and VCP
suggests Raucci was returning to his normal race speeds ... Now
assuming Raucci ran a speed rating of 181 at VCP, Josh's rating would
be 204 (because 1:09 or 69 seconds faster equals 23 points) ...
Jordan McDougal's speed rating (for 15:48) would be about 191.
Now a different perspective - the race courses themselves ... I
determined that the course speed at Bowdoin Park at Federations in
2003 and 2001 was almost exactly the same (forget about 2002 Feds
because the weather and conditions were awful) ... Compared to Bowdoin
Park Feds (2003, 2001) the race course speed at VCP Footlockers in
2002 was about 12 seconds faster than Bowdoin (average race times were
12 seconds faster at VCP) ... This year at VCP, the race times on the
2.5 miles course have been averaging about 10 to 12 seconds faster
than last year (I don't know why, but they have been) ... so MAYBE the
VCP 3.1 course is 15 seconds faster this year than last (this is an
assumption) ... So the course difference between Bowdoin Park (Feds)
and VCP (3.1 mile) may be 12 seconds + 15 seconds = 27 seconds faster
at VCP (3.1 mile) this year ... If we subtract 27 seconds from Lopez
Lomong's winning time at Feds (15:45), that would be 15:18 (or 10
seconds slower than Josh McDougal) ... Lomong's speed rating at
Bowdoin was 201 (I'm confident in that number) ... Josh's rating would
be about 3 points higher or 204, which agrees with the comparison to
David Raucci.
Extending the race course analogy to the girls ... the girl's
time scaling is slightly different than the boys in my approach ...
the course difference is about 21 seconds (rather than 27 seconds) ...
add 21 seconds to Scherf's time (17:50) to yield 18:11 ... in the
girl's Federation race, 18:11 corresponds to a speed rating of 154.3
... Criscuolo's rating would be 146.3.
So that's my best guess on how fast Josh McDougal and Lindsey Scherf
ran on Nov. 16th race at Van Cortlandt Park. |
