The table below lists some past performances for some of the top contenders in the Footlocker NE race (to be run Nov 29, 2003) ... the table separates runners by state ... I am unable to derive speed ratings for many of the out-of state races because I do not have enough information (and I am not interested in spending the time to get the needed information) ... however, I have some speed ratings for most out-of-state runners that indicates their relative speed ... This should be a very good race ... Six Footlocker qualifiers from last year return ... and face a seroius challenge from other top runners. New York enters a strong group of runners ... Hakon DeVries (John Jay EF) and Kevin Tschirhart (Northport) both qualified last year - Hakon Devries is coming off a foot injury - he finished 2nd at NY States (Class A) and skipped the Federation Meet to prepare for Footlockers - Kevin Tschirhart finished 4th at Federations ... Josh McDougal (Home-Schooled, Peru, NY) just broke the Van Cortlandt Park high school record for 5K (15:08) and enters Footlockers with the highest individual speed rating of any runner - he finished 9th at last year's Footlocker NE ... Lopez Lomong (Tully) and Dominic Luka (Tully) are Sudanese runners who came to the US after spending years in Kenyan refugee camps ... Lopez Lomong is the NY Federation Champion (2nd fastest time ever at Bowdoin Park) - Lopez won every race this year except the Brown University Invite (finished 2nd to team mate Dominic Luka after straining a hamstring in the final 800 meters ... would have won in the high 14:40s) - Lomong is stronger this year ... Dominic Luka has run very well despite a sore knee - he set the course record at Brown (15:02) and finished 2nd at Federations ... New York has some other contending runners including Kyle Heath (Victor) - 3rd at Federations and State Class B Champion, Bryan Buchanan (Cicero-North Syracuse) - State Class A Champion, was unfortunately sick at Federations, and Jacob Gurzler (Shenendehowa) - 5th at Federations and usual top runner for the highly ranked (and Federation Champion) Shenendehowa team. Out-of State Contenders ... Ahmed Haji (Conard CT) is the New England Champion and a returning Footlocker qualifier - Haji has run some very good speed ratings - he was beaten by Victor Gras at Manhattan and by Gavin Coombs at Connecticut Opens, but remains a solid contender to qualify again ... Gavin Coombs (Griswold CT) was 3rd at the New England Championships (behind Amhed Haji and Ben True) and 3rd at the Great American - Coombs beat Haji twice (CT Open and Windham Invite), but Haji's margin of victory at the New England Championships (22.6 seconds) was convincing - Coombs has the speed and ability to qualify. Benjamin True (Greely Maine) was a decent 2nd to Ahmed Haji at the New England Championships - Ben True has run some consistently fast times (setting several course records in the process) and is another solid contender to qualify again ... Eric Giddings (South Portland ME) also appears to be a contender (4th at the New England Championships) ... Cory Thorne (Portsmouth NH) was 5th at the New England Championships Note: Massachusetts does not compete in the New England Championships. Victor Gras (Belmont MA) is having another outstanding season - had the fastest winning time at the Manhattan Invite (12:17, although some timers clocked him at 12:15) and posted some fast times in Massachusetts championship races - Gras was 4th at the Great American (behind Gavin Coombs) - a solid contender to qualify again ... other Massachusetts contenders include Keith Gill (Brockton), Chris Barnicle (Newton North) and Khalid Abdi (Brockton) - Keith Gill (Brockton) finished 3rd at the Brown Univ. Invite (behind Dominic Luka and Lopez Lomong). Pennsylvania has at least four serious contenders ... team mates Ian Gottesfeld and Chris Williams led the WC Henderson team - Ian Gottesfeld was 6th at the Great American ROC and qualified for Footlockers last year coming off similar speed ratings ... Chris Spooner (Lewisburg PA) has run well all season (finished 3rd in the Mid-East Regional Meet) ... Steve Hallinan (Cardinal O'Hara PA) has also run well (finished 4th in the Mid-East Regional Meet). New Jersey has several serious contenders including Mohamed Khadraoui (JFK- Paterson), Chris Pannone (Hunterdon), Gregory Hughes (Mainland) and Justin Scheid (Pope John) ... Mohamed Khadraoui and Justin Scheid were both undefeated entering the New Jersey Meet of Champions which was won by Khadraoui ... Mohamed Khadraoui (JFK- Paterson) came to the US from Morocco in June 2000 (speaking no English) - his winning time at the Meet of Champions (15:22) is the 2nd fastest time ever at Holmdel Park ... Projection ... The quality of the Boys Seeded Race is very high and very deep ... All twelve of the guys in the photos above are capable of qualifying as are a number of other runners ... Going into the race, several runners seem to be favorites to qualify - Mohamed Khadraoui, Victor Gras, Ahmed Haji, Ben True, Josh McDougal and Lopez Lomong ... add Hakon DeVries if he's 100% ... But the other runners profiled here are very close and capable of qualifying ... A huge group of runners were tightly positioned at the mile mark in last year's race ... I expect the same this year ... How these runners react to the close competition will likely be more important in determining the qualifiers than their speed (as reflected by my speed ratings) ... but based on ratings alone, here is the projection (which uses more than just their best rating) and possible finishing time ... don't put too much faith in the project time itself (varies with course conditions), but rather the time difference between runners: |

The table below lists some past performances for some of the top contenders in the Footlocker NE race (to be run Nov 29, 2003) ... the table separates runners by state ... I am unable to derive speed ratings for many of the out-of state races because I do not have enough information (and I am not interested in spending the time to get the needed information) ... however, I have some speed ratings for most out-of-state runners that indicates their relative speed ... I approximated most out-of-state speed ratings rather quickly, so the accuracy is not nearly as certain as for the NY runners ... however, I think they're in the right ballpark. New York has an exceptional strong field of runners ... Nicole Blood (Saratoga) has won everything this year including the Great American and NY Federation Championship and enters as the race favorite ... Caitlin McTague (Niskayuna) and Laura Cummings (Bay Shore) qualified and finished 3rd and 4th at Nationals last year - both are capable of qualifying again, but the competition is stiff ... Aislinn Ryan (Warwick) has been very good all year, including 2nd at NY Feds and 2nd at Great American ... Lindsey Scherf (Westchester Track Club) has already run fast times at Van Cortlandt Park (17:50, 17:54) and is a strong contender to qualify ... Brittney Criscuolo (East Meadow) was 3rd at States (Class A) and has run good VCP times this season (18:13, 18:14) ... Nichole Lister (South Jefferson) and Brittany Crawford (Fayetteville-Manlius) have both been running fast enough to contend, as has Lindsey Ferguson (Saratoga) ... So New York has at least nine legitimate contenders. Out-of-State Contenders ... The top contender is Lindsay Donaldson (Lincoln-Sudbury MA) - she decided to run cross country for the first time as a senior (after playing on a good soccer team) - Lindsay has won every race except as 2 second loss to Nicole Blood at the Brown Univ. Invite - her speed rating at Brown (158) is convincing because many other NY girls raced at Brown that day - Lindsay Donaldson appears to be a solid favorite to qualify. Andrea Walkonen (Conant NH) is the New Hampshire State Champion - she has destroyed a number of course records this year and her winning margins have been phenomenal - I wish I could make better speed ratings for her (the Sanborn Invite seemed to be at least 150+) - her 7th place finish in the New England Championships makes me wonder (perhaps she was sick or injured ... couldn't find a news article about it) ... but she has shown the speed capability to be a solid contender. Amie Schumacher (Holy Cross CT) has won her last three races including the Connecticut State and New England Championships - her performance at the NE Championships is not only impressive from the speed aspect, but it was an excellent 5K performance compared to her 4K Connecticut races (girls generally race 4K in CT). Frances Coon (Allentown Central Catholic PA) is a top Pennsylvania runner who has been running very well - she lost to Laura Cummings by 9 seconds at the Spiked Shoe Invitational ... Lauren Centrowitz (Broadneck Maryland) finished 19th at last year's Footlocker NE and has been running well ... Christine Laakso (Fitchburg MA) finished 2nd to Lindsay Donaldson at the Massachusetts All-States. New Jersey's top contenders appear to be Brittany Sedberry (Ocean City NJ) and Jennifer Clausen (Jackson Mem NJ) ... Brittany Sedberry just won the NJ Meet of Champions (18:42) by 16 seconds ... Clausen was 6th (19:18) Projection ... Based on ratings, here is a projection and possible finishing time ... don't put too much faith in the project time itself (varies with course conditions), but rather the time difference between runners ... For some girls, I guessed somewhat (for example, I wasn't sure how to handle Andrea Walkonen's ratings) ...
