April 26, 2002 - Phoenix Firebird Relays ...
Phoenix High School ... 16 girls and boys teams were on-hand to
compete ... unfortunately, the weather was cold (about 45 deg) with a
stiff wind (20-25 mph for most of the meet ... these conditions kept
times (and distances) somewhat slower than normal. This was a
co-ed relay meet with combined scoring. Tully was the
combined (girls + boys) team winner ... on the girl's side, Tully was
first (110) followed by Oswego (74) and Chittenango (64) ... the Tully boys
added 39 points for a combined team score of 149 ... I believe Oswego
was 2nd overall with a combined score of 132, but I left before the
official team results were available.
In several events (4x800, DMR and
1500x3 combined), boys and girls ran on the track simultaneously ...
they started on opposite sides of the track at the same time ... the
meet finished faster!!

April 20, 2002 - Canastota Classic Relay
Carnival ...
Canastota High School ... ten girls and nine boys teams were on-hand
to compete ... The highlight of
the meet was a record performance by the Liverpool girls in the DMR
... they topped their own OHSL record of 12:58.0 (set a week ago) with
a new record of 12:50.0 ... Jennifer Taormina lead-off with an
excellent 1200m (3:52.9) ... Brittany Warren followed with the
400m (64.8) and Allison Rutherford with a good 800m (2:23.4)
... Meghan Nolan anchored the performance with the 1600m
(5:29.1).
Tully's Lopez Lomong had a very
good day ... Lopez started out by anchoring the Tully 4x800 relay to
victory with a 1:58.5 split ... he won the 3000m Steeplechase
(his first ever) with a good time of 10:08.1 ... Lopez had the best
jump in the Triple Jump relay (38-7) and the best throw in the Javelin
relay (132-9).

April 17, 2002 - Newark Spring Break-Out ...
at
Newark High School (Section 5) ... a large number schools (mostly from
Section 5 and 6) competed in the meet which started at 10am and
finished at 7:30pm ... the Tully girls and Solvay were teams from
Section 3 that attended. It was a very warm (mid 80s) and sunny
day ... the heat slowed times for the distance races, but the sprints
and field events had some very good performances.

April 13, 2002 - Lansing Invitational ...
Lansing High School (Section 4, near Ithaca) was the host for their
4th Annual Kick Start Track & Field Invitational ... 19 teams can
to compete (17 Section 4 teams plus Tully and Cato-Meridian) ... weather was 60-65 deg with
intermittent to steady rain (but very light winds) - the weather was
excellent for the first half of the meet, but steady rains in
the afternoon contributed to slower running times ...
Nationally ranked Molly Huddle
(Elmira Notre Dame) impressively won both of her specialties in record
time ... Molly first won the 1500m Run in 4:31.6 and then won the
3000m in 9:36.8 ... in both efforts, she ran the entire race with
virtual no competition (effectively they were time trials). The
3000m was especially impressive since it was run during a steady rain
shower ... Molly was hoping to run a little faster, but the final time
(9:36.8) was outstanding under the conditions ... for the second year
in a row, Molly was voted MVP track athlete of the meet ... Molly will
be attending Notre Dame University next fall ... Molly's split times
for the 1500m/3000m are posted on the
photos/results page of the meet.
Tully's Lopez Lomong displayed an
interesting performance in the Boys 4x800 Relay ... running anchor,
Lopez received the baton in next-to-last position ... he then ran his
first 400m in 53.5 (yes, 53.5) ... for some reason, he got a little
tired in the final 400m, but still finished with a relay split of
1:59.3 (and a third place team finish) ... Lopez returned later to
finish 3rd in the 1600m (4:32.1) and 2nd in the open 800m (2:06.7) ...
the 800m was run during a heavy rain shower that really slowed the
race.

April 12, 2002 - CNS Co-Ed Relays ...
Cicero-North Syracuse
High School ... The Michael J. Bragman Athletic Complex at CNS was the
site of the 1st Annual CNS Co-ed Relays. Construction at the track &
field area is complete (Coca-Cola was a major financial backer of the
complex) ... the stadium, locker rooms, concession areas, press boxes,
and track are outstanding for both fans and athletes ... Other
invitational and championship meets will be held at CNS (see
Track Schedule) as well as this summer's Empire State Games ...
Complete results of the CNS Relays are
posted at the Leone Timing
web-site (Pat Leone & crew did another great job with the FAT
timing, entries and results ... I wish Pat could do more track meets!)
... official FAT results were being posted on the scoreboard only
seconds after runners crossed the finish line!! ... This was the
first meet where Section 3 coaches submitted entries directly at the
Leone web-site ... similar submissions will be used for the Liverpool
Girls Invite (Apr 27) and various championship meets later in the year
...
This was a relay meet ... I timed a few
relay legs/splits and have posted these results on my
Photo/Results Page for the CNS Relays
... the weather for the meet was decent (partly sunny, 65-70 deg, but
with strong gusty
winds) ...
