February 20 -  Select Meet (at Manley Field House) ... full boys results may be available on the Section III web-site  ... video replay of the meet will be available from TrackMeets.com ... I have posted some photos/results of the Select Meet with results & performance information - I have most of the Girl's individual results.

The Select Meet included both boys and girls ... qualifying standards were in effect for all events & only one athlete per school per event was allowed ... I did not get the boys team results; however, for the girls - CNS was the easy Class A winner with about 73 points and South Jefferson was the Class B winner with about 31 points.

Once again, Tracey Brauksieck (Homer) looked very good in winning both the 1000m (2:59.5) and 1500m (4:44.9).

See the Photo Page for additional results.

January 21 -  Boys Arcaro Meet (at Manley Field House) ...   As before,  detailed results will be available on the Section III web-site or Coach Foster's Baldwinsville Website ... video replay of the meet will be available from TrackMeets.com ... I have posted some photos of the Boys Arcaro Meet with additional performances information.

Tully's Lopez Lomong competed in individual track events for the first time in his life, and he performed quite well ... Lopez finished 2nd in the 800m (2:04.2) and 4th in the 500m (1:09.8) ... Mike Wicks, a very good runner Liverpool runner, won both races (2:03.1, 1:07.7) and provided Lopez with some much needed experience ... Lopez showed some good sprinting speed in the 500m race when he got off to a slow start, passed the entire field to lead at 200m (26.0), went through 400m in 53.9, and held on gamely in the final 100m with Mike Wicks and Brian McNiff (CBA) beating him to the finish line ... the 800m race was a tactical race (400m split of 62.8) where Lopez followed Mike Wicks, and Mike was simply too fast over the final 200m.

See the Photo Page for additional results.

Jan 18, 2002 -  Southern Tier Relays (Cornell University) ... Here's a quick note regarding the Girls SMR (Sprint Medley Relay) at this Section 4 relay meet where the top three teams were Horseheads (4:15.3), Elmira Southside (4:18.5) and Lansing (4:18.8) ... according to the current Armory Track leader-board, only three NY teams have run faster (Liverpool has the Section 3 best time of 4:20.8) ... the final 800m leg had three exceptional performance splits - Alexis Lake (Horseheads, 2:17.0), Sara Rice (ESS, 2:17.7) and Melissa Usack (Lansing, 2:13.9) ... Melissa (a sophomore) trailed by a sizeable margin when receiving the baton and ran 63.4 for the first 400m to catch the competition ... Melissa won the 800m silver medal at last summer's Empire State Games (2:16.43) for the Central Region.  Lansing, perennial powerhouse in girl's track & field, has not fielded a complete girl's cross country team in recent years (although 3 good junior high runners ran with Melissa this past season) ... a full team is likely for the 2002 XC season, and they could potentially be one of the top Class C teams in the State ... (thanks to Coach Eade for sending the relay splits).

Jan 17, 2002 -  Girls Bob Grieve Meet (Manley Field House) ...  Detailed results will be available on the Section III web-site ... I have posted some photos of the Girls Bob Grieve Meet with additional performance information.

3000m ... winner Ashley Hughes (Phoenix, 10:49.9) lead from start to finish to win impressively ... Laura Ewald (CNS, 4th, 11:18.9) stayed close early (with the rest of the field gapped), but Ashley opened an 8 second lead by 1000m ... race splits - 400m (1:17.5), 800m (2:40.8), 1000m (3:23.2), 1500m (5:12.5), 1600m (5:34.9) ... Westhill's Kayleigh Wheeless (11:10.8) and Meghan McAnaney (11:15.9) set indoor PRs to finish 2nd and 3rd ... Laura Scott (Bville, 11:19.1) was a good 5th.

4x400m Relay ... FM won the relay (4:14.3) ... splits - Becky Hardman (64.2), Lauren Heron (62.2), Laurel Burdick (63.2) and Ellen Luber (64.6)

See the Photo Page for additional results.

============================
Jan 15, 2002 -  Boys Bob Grieve Meet (Manley Field House) ... The Tully Boys were planning to attend this meet (Lopez Lomong was scheduled to run the 1000m and 300m) ... unfortunately, Coach Paccia's Mother-in-law passed away, so the team decided to skip this meet ... our sincere condolences to Jim, Cheryl Paccia and family.

I did not attend the meet, but I was able watch some replays on TrackMeets.com ... they have a digital clock running during the races, so getting some split times is possible ...
Boys 1000m ... Brian McNiff (CBA, 2:38.1) led from start to finish and set approximate splits of 200m (29.5), 400m (61.0) and 800m (2:07) ... Kevin Horvath (Sauquoit, 2:38.4) chased Brian is a good effort to be 2nd.
Boys 3200m ... Dave Masse (FM, 9:50.3) ran another good race on the front-end to win in a season's best time ... the opening 1600m split was about 4:54 ... Dave Cook (Auburn, 9:57.4) showed nice improvement in breaking 10:00.

Boys 1600m ... Chris Nolan (Liverpool, 4:44.5) won this race for the second time this indoor season ... Steve Corsello (Skaneateles, 4:46.6) finished 2nd with Kevin Page (FM, 4:46.8) 3rd ... some race splits were about 200m (34.5), 400m (1:10), 600m (1:46.5), 800m (2:24.5), 1000m (3:01.5), 1200m (3:38) and 1400m (4:13.8).

Jan 12, 2002 - Finger Lakes Invitational (at Cortland State) ... complete results should be posted on Armory Track ... I have posted some photos of the Finger Lakes Invitational with performance information.

Homer was the only Section 3 team competing ... for the second week in a row, Tracey Brauksieck was scratched from her events.

Alexis Lake (Horseheads) was an impressive winner in both the 600m (1:38.4) and 1500m (5:00.9) ... her 600m time is both a PR and school record, and she can probably run faster (the Cortland State track is not the best place to set records) ... Alexis was the State Indoor 1000m champion last year as a junior (and she still prefers the 1000m distance indoors) ... she has narrowed her college choices to two schools - Columbia University and Boston College ... in 1998, Alexis won the Federation XC championship.

On Jan 6 at an all-comers meet at Cornell, Molly Huddle (Elmira Notre Dame) ran outstanding times in the 1 mile (4:56.9) and 2 miles (10:19.8) ... but Molly is playing basketball for Elmira ND in the IAC Conference ... since the IAC does not allow students to compete in two school sports during the same season, Molly can not compete in the indoor State Meet (I confirmed this with Section 4 officials).

Kaitlin O'Sullivan (Westhill) won the first 600m heat in 1:50.2.

Girls 3000m run ... CNS runners Laura Ewald (2nd, 11:17.5) and Marie Parks (1st, 11:14.4) controlled the race from start to finish ... Laura set all of the following split times - 200m (42.5), 400m (1:25.0), 600m (2:10), 800m (2:55), 1000m (3:40), 1200m (4:25), 1500m (5:33), 1600m (5:56), 2000m (7:28) ... for most of the race, the CNS runners maintained a 10 to 30 meter lead over 3rd-place finisher Kayleigh Wheeless (Westhill, 11:24.9) ... Meghan McAnaney (Westhill, 11:28.7) was 4th with Stephanie Bartlett (West Gen, 11:29) running a good race to be 5th.

Dec 17 - Girls Jack Morse Relays (Manley Field House) ... A large number of athletes and fans turned out for the first Section 3 Girls indoor track meet of the 2001-2002 season. The varsity meet was entirely relays (DMR, SMR, 4x800, 4x1600, etc) ... field events were two-person relays (distances are added together).  I have very few official results ... detailed indoor results usually appear very quickly on the Section III web-site, but no volunteers were available to help Coach Vermeulen enter results into a computer for quick posting on the Internet or sending to the newspaper. Interested volunteers should contact Coach Vermeulen ... otherwise, Internet results of the girls meet may be scarce ... I have posted some photos of Morse Relays with a little performance information.

South Jefferson won the 4x800 Relay (10:25) over 2nd-place Phoenix (10:26) ... Melissa Lister (2:31.4) and Jessica Lister (2:30.0) ran excellent legs for South Jeff ... South Jefferson will be competing at both Section 3 and Section 10 indoor meets ... most Section 10 meets will be held at St. Lawrence University's new field house ... like last year, South Jefferson can compete for Section 10 at the indoor State Meet (Section 10 has only seven indoor teams).

The high jump was an excellent competition between winner Marie Swieta (APW) and Ricshara Knight (Henninger) ... Marie cleared 5-5 and Ricshara cleared 5-4 ... both jumpers performed very well, and both appear capable of jumping higher.

A minor controversy was created by Liverpool's new uniforms ... examples of the new uniform and previous uniform are shown in the photo section ... the tops and bottoms of uniforms are required to touch before a race begins (no midriff skin should show) ... after the race starts, the tops and bottoms do not need to touch.  Liverpool's new uniforms are very attractive ... but the tops are a little short for taller athletes under these rules.  Personal opinion ... New York State and Section 3 are "behind-the-times" in regards to uniform and jewelry regulations ... most other states allow runners to wear jewelry (such as necklaces, watches, earrings, studs, sunglasses) and smaller uniforms (e.g. two-piece uniforms) ... it's allowed at the college and independent levels and at national high school competitions such as the Footlocker Nationals.  I believe it should be allowed in NY and Section 3.
