Katelyn Tuohy won all of her high school XC races in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons ... Katelyn was the NXN National Champion 3 times and she achieved 170+ speed ratings in nine races ... she had five consecutive races with speed ratings of 172 or higher during her junior season, with a highest speed rating of 177 at the New Jersey Shore Coaches Invite at Holmdel Park in 2018 (her 16:21 mark was the first and only girl to run the Holmdel 5K course under 17:00 with the boy's course record being 14:53 by two-time Foot Locker National Champion Edward Cheserek ...   Jane Hedengren showed excellent XC improvement from her freshmen through senior seasons ... Jane peaked at the upper elite XC level at the end of her senior season in her last three races ... She won the NXN National Championship in her last high school race with an excellent PR speed rating of 172 and winning by 40.7 seconds - Video of Hedengren's performance at NXN Nationals 2024 is available at: https://nxn.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?event_id=13&do=videos&video_id=402459

Jane demonstrated continued running improvement in subsequent indoor and outdoor track races by setting many National Track Records ... With respect to XC distance, Jane first set the 5000 Meter Track Indoor National Record with a 15:13.26 performance at the Nike Indoor Nationals the Armory Track in NYC (high school only race) that was speed-rated to a corresponding XC speed rating of 175.

Jane then set a fantastic outdoor 5000 Meter Track Record of 14:57.93 in the Byran Clay Invitational (April 17,2025) at Azusa Pacific University in California - this was a race of professional and collegiate runners having pacers and pacing lights under excellent running conditions (video replay link) ... The absence of other high school runners in the race having known and comparative seasonal XC speed ratings complicates estimation of a corresponding speed rating ... Estimation using a Chart of XC Speed Ratings with Approximated Times for Various Track Distances yields a "raw" speed rating estimate of 183-184 ... Unfortunately, in most higher level races and races with excellent conditions and pacing, these types of speed rating estimates are over-estimated for XC purposes ... But this Hedengren race is one of the greatest high school Track performances of all time.

Amber Trotter was the Foot Locker National Champion in 2001 where she achieved the highest speed rating by any American high school female runner (180) with a remarkable performance ... Video of the Foot Locker 2001 race available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMrOOeMhPTA

Amber finished 7th at Foot Locker 2000 that was won by Sara Bei (now Sara Hall) in 16:55 breaking the Foot Locker Orlando, FL course record by 10 seconds ... Amber demonstrated excellent XC improvement during her senior season, and her 16:24 winning time at the 2001 Foot Locker National race in Orlando broke the course record by 31 seconds (and she won the race by 40 seconds) ... Foot Locker Nationals was held in Orlando during 1997 to 2001 (and not at Balboa Park).

A very nice summary of Amber Trotter's 2001 XC season can found through various links on the Redwood Empire website at: https://redwoodempirerunning.com/2001-cross-country/

At the start of the 2001 XC season, Amber was still in the process of recovering from a well-reported eating disorder ... during her junior spring track season, she was forbidden to compete) ... Two articles about her eating disorder are at: https://archive.dyestat.com/state/ca/1xc/trotter-amber-interview.htm and https://www.espn.com/oly/columns/jeff_hollobaugh/1297835.html

Previously, I had approximated speed ratings for some of Amber's invitational XC races in 2001 ... I re-evaluated the Mt. SAC Invite because it was a two-day meet (the updated, but similar value, is shown above).

Amber won all of her 2001 XC races by large margins ... Although running competitively hard in most races, she was building strength throughout the season ... But she did run all-out at Mt. SAC and Foot Locker Nationals out of respect for the top previous runners from her region of California ... She also intended to run all-out and break the Woodward Park course record at the State Meet, but the conditions were awful (described as a chilling and driving rainstorm with quagmire conditions, see https://redwoodempirerunning.com/trotter-races-to-state-title/ ) ... She did win in 17:01 (4th fastest ever at Woodward at the time, and 45 seconds faster than any other girl ... fastest guy was 15:17 (he finished 7th at Foot Locker Nats) and only 7 guys ran faster than 15:45).

Unfortunately, Amber lost nearly all of her senior outdoor track season due to injury (piriformis syndrome) ... she did run a 10:20 (3200m) and 5:03 (1600m) in an early meet before being side-lined (article link).

Melody Fairchild was born Sept 10, 1973 in Boulder, Colorado (source link that includes a nice HS summary) which means she competed as a 17-yr old throughout her senior year in high school ... Melody won Foot Locker Nationals (named Kinney Nationals at that time) in both her senior and junior seasons, and was 2nd as a sophomore.

As a senior in 1990, Melody set the Foot Locker National (Balboa Park) course record of 16:39.2 that still stands (as of June 2025) ... Video and other information about Melody and the race is available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ka4Ej1QSofw  ... The Balboa course was not running fast in 1990 due in part to temperatures in the mid-80s at race time ( https://footlockercc.com/history/history.php ) ... The video notes that Melody was running in about 5th-place at the mile before taking the lead and winning by nearly a minute ... only 7 girls broke 18:00 at that 1990 race.

I could not find sufficient results of Melody's Colorado State XC Championship meets to speed rate those performances, although abbreviated results are available at: https://co.milesplit.com/articles/24312/colorado-state-cross-country-results-1977-1997 ... In 1990, Melody won her Colorado State Championship in 17:43 which was nearly two and a half minutes faster than the 2nd fastest girl of the day (20:02) ... the fastest boy at that State Meet ran 16:31 (and he finished 5th at Foot Locker Midwest and 22nd at Foot Locker Nationals).

In March of 1991 (as 17 yr-old HS senior), Melody finished 3rd at the World Junior XC Championships in Antwerp, Belgium ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1991_IAAF_World_Cross_Country_Championships_%E2%80%93_Junior_women%27s_race ) where she was beaten by two Kenyan runners.

Two weeks before the World Junior XC Championships, Melody became the first American high school girl to break the 10:00 mark at 2 Miles on a Track ... She did it at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships (on 3/9/1991) at the Syracuse University Carrier Dome ... the running track was a flat 200-meter oval that was painted on the rubber surface beneath the football field artificial-turf surface ... The video and description of the race are available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKVNIvWiuGc

Melody ran the 2-Mile race as a training exercise in preparation for the World Junior XC Champ with a goal of breaking 10:00 (and the existing record) ... she ran the opening mile in 5:03.5 and finished at a record 9:55.92 ... she was jogging around immediately after the race not appearing very tired.
