Note ... The scores are simply my pre-season "guess" of relative team abilities in a combined race ... I included 31 teams to show some depth.

In General ... Similar to other pre-seasons, there is always uncertainty in the team scores posted above ... Pre-season projections are often made with limited knowledge (or no knowledge) of incoming impact runners such as transfers (from other sports or other schools) or significantly improved runners from the previous year ... It requires guessing ... But it is good enough for pre-season!

Monroe-Woodbury enters the 2024 season as the favorite based on speed ratings ... Last year, Monroe-Woodbury also won both the NY Federation Championship and NXR New York, and they return 5 of the top 6 runners from those races ... Overall, that makes Monroe-Woodbury the pre-season favorite.

Ithaca is relatively close based on speed ratings ... they return 5 of their top 6, but finished well behind Monroe-Woodbury at States and NXR ... But the speed ratings indicate Ithaca could challenge.

Saratoga Springs beat Monroe-Woodbury at the Class A State Championship (via a tie-breaker) and they return the top 3 scorers from that race ... I believe Saratoga Springs might fill-out their scorers to be competitive ... Xavier and North Rockland are in the hunt for a top-three position.

Inclusion of top new runners or improved existing runners could make other teams challengers as well ..... This may surprise some viewers, but Monroe-Woodbury is in my National Pre-Season top 30.

Like all classes, the Class A preseason rankings are based primarily on available speed ratings from 2023 ... But a few "adjustments" were made based on track results.

The top 2 teams above are the top teams in Class A and in NY State overall ... And 8 of top 9 teams overall are Class A teams.

Pittsford Sutherland enters the season as a slight favorite in Class B ... Last year, Pittsford Sutherland finished a close 3rd at the State Class B meet (Manhasset finished 2nd 10 points ahead of Pittsford Sutherland) ... Pittsford Sutherland's top returner (Will Tempest) won that race, and the team returns 6 of 7 runners (losing only their #2 scorer).

Manhasset finished a close 2nd at the last year's State Class B meet (won by Burnt Hills who graduated their top 2 runners) ... Manhasset returns 6 of 7 runners from that race, and are a serious contender.

Pearl River finished 4th at last year's Class B race and returns 3 of their top 4 runners.

I am expecting (hoping) a few teams in Class B will show some nice improvement.

East Aurora is not only a perennial contender, but they won last year's Class C race (by 37 points over Bronxville) ... East Aurora returns 6 of 7 runners (but do lose their #1 runner to graduation).

Bronxville was 2nd at last year's Class C race ... They returns 6 of 7 runners (but do lose one scorer), and are a serious contender.

Alden is an interesting team ... they compete in Section 6 with East Aurora ... Three Alden runners (all sophomores last year) finished in the top 17 at last year's Class C race, and are in the top 10 Class C returning runners this year ... If Alden can develop 2 additional scorers at a decent level, they could make it interesting.

As normal, lots of uncertainty with various teams and placement ... Placement above is simply a best-guess.

Class D seems to have enough uncertainties that makes prediction uncertain ... Factors such as lack of team depth, status of returning runners, and unknown abilities of new runners could make Class D interesting and changeable as the season progresses.

Port Jefferson is the favorite based on returning speed ratings ... Port Jefferson finished 4th in last year's Class C race, but drop back to Class D this coming season ... They lose their #2 and #4 scorers from the State Meet.

Enough teams could be close enough that one or two new impactful runners could make them a contender or possibly a favorite.
