Pre-Season ... National BOYS Individual Profiles/Ranks - Cross Country 2018

Below are Performance Profiles for 32 top national high school male runners entering the 2018 cross country season ... I find it interesting to examine profiles of the top national boys and also compare them to the top NY boys (Profiles for the 2018 New York Boys) ... Performance data helps evaluation ... and knowing the performance level of the best national runners is always interesting ..... Opinions will differ on the ranking position of individual runners, but that's a good thing ... It's also a "necessary thing" for serious handicappers ... The order of the runners below is my current pre-season opinion .

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2018 XC season. The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster). Selected track data are also shown.

Boys Pre-Season: ... Wide Open for the Top National Spot

At least a dozen or more guys appear to be serious contenders for the top-spot at either NXN or Foot Locker Nationals ... Multiple guys could be placed at the top spot in my profiles below.

I decided to place Liam Anderson at #1 because he is the top returning runner from NXN Nationals and he has the highest retuning speed rating (also had a fast 3200m time at Arcadia).

#1 - Liam Anderson 12 Redwood HS California

Liam Anderson is the top returning runner from NXN Nationals, plus he had the best speed rating of any returning runner (199) ... Set an excellent PR at 3200m at Arcadia (8:52.74) and another PR in winning the California State 1600m (4:09.31) ... Overall, that gets him placed at the top of my pre-season National list.

But several of the runners below could be placed at the top for various reasons ... Looks very competitive.

#2 - Drew Bosley 12 Homestead HS Wisconsin

Drew Bosley qualified for both NXN and Foot Locker Nationals and finished 7th at both races (he is the #2 returning runner from NXN) ... Drew had many excellent track performances ... won the USATF Junior National 5000m (14:32.75) ... two sub-9:00 3200m races and a fast Mile (4:08.82) ... a serious challenger for the top-spot in the nation.

Set the Colorado 3200m record (9:01.53 at altitude) ... excellent 2nd at the Brooks PR Invite 2-Mile (8:49.46) ... Seems ready to challenge for the top-spot nationally in his junior year.

#5 - Devin Hart 12 Point Pleasant HS New Jersey

Devin Hart is the New Jersey XC champion and he finished 10th at Foot Locker Nationals (the #5 returning runner from Foot Locker) ... had multiple XC performances with speed ratings in the 190s ..... Impressive track performance when he finished 4th at the west-coast Brooks PR 2-Mile (8:53.36) and the flew to NJ the next day and won the State 3200m (8:58.58).

Alex Maier was outstanding during his sophomore XC season ... top five finishes at both NXN and Foot Locker ... high speed ratings (200, 196) ... He still performed very well despite some physical problems last year ... His sophomore XC form makes him a real contender for a top spot nationally in the coming season.
