Note ... The scores are simply my pre-season "guess" of relative team abilities in a combined race ... I included 29 teams to show some depth.

In General ... Fayetteville-Manlius is the obvious odds-on favorite ... FM returns their top 5 runners that won NXN Nationals ..... Saratoga, North Rockland, and Shenedehowa are the top prospects for the second qualifying spot to NXN ... Other teams could come into play.

Fayetteville-Manlius, Saratoga, North Rockland and Shenedehowa have additional comments below in the Class A section.

I have heard rumors about runners who may not competing in XC this fall ... If true, it would impact the pre-season team rankings and scores posted here ... Of course, this has an effect every pre-season.

Additional comments and information are given below by class ... Class consideration is important in the pre-season because it impacts far more runners than projections intended for Federation Championships or the NXN-NY regional qualifier.

Fayetteville-Manlius is the odds-on favorite to win the New York State Class A title again and FM will be the favorite to win NXN Nationals again ... FM returns the top five girls from the winning NXN team ... profiles of the five FM girls are  available on the Girls Individual Profiles page.

Saratoga returns their top four runners from both the Federation Meet and the NXN Regional Qualifier including the State's #1 rated runner (Kelsey Chmiel) ... and Saratoga is typically deep in talent ... but as I write this, I'm not certain that all of the potential Saratoga returning runners are actually returning for the coming XC season ... so that makes the score listed above a guess.

North Rockland has a strong lead duo in Katelyn Tuohy and Haleigh Morales which helps the team score a lot ... the #3 through #5 scorers have shown the ability to run well.

Shenendehowa is returning 6 of their girls that qualified for NXN Nationals last year where they finished 14th in the nation ... and they are only ranked 4th above ... In part, Saratoga and North Rockland did not have good team races at the NY NXN Regional (excluding them from NXN consideration) ... Speed ratings suggest the scores above ... uncertainty about returning runners comes into play here.

Niskayuna definitely looks improved ... The Suburban Council League could have some good match-ups with their talent (Saratoga, Shenendehowa, Niskayuna, Burnt Hills, Guilderland, Colonie and others).

East Aurora is good every year, and this year is no exception ... East Aurora finished 3rd at States last year and return 3 of their top 4 runners (plus 2 others, and they typically have decent depth).

Last year's winning team (Shoreham Wading River) graduated 3 of their top 4 runners, but still have super runner Katherine Lee ... John Jay Cross River (2nd last year) was also hurt by graduation (losing 2 of the top 4 and #6).

Pearl River did not qualify for States last year after losing to John Jay Cross River at sectionals (could be another close match-up this season).

Burnt Hills (4th at States last year) should be competitive for the top spot, but they lose their top runner (Eva Scott) ..... Westhill-Ludden (6th at States last year) returns their entire team and looks competitive as does Cornwall (5th at States last year).

Greenwich is the defending Class  D champion (and the Class D champion from 2015) ... Greenwich beat Maple Grove by 51-57 at the State Meet last year.

Both Greenwich and Maple Grove return all 7 runners from States, so both teams could be considered co-favorites ... Greenwich gets the call because they are the defending champion.

South Lewis finished 3rd at States last year and return their top six runners from States ... Beaver River and Tully will need to improve to beat South Lewis at sectionals.

Addison drops from Class C to Class D ... Harley-Allendale-Columbia finished 4th at States last year and return 6 of 7 runners.

As normal, lots of uncertainty in projecting the other Class D teams (it's a real guess at this point) ..... Talented new runners can have a major impact on team scoring, especially at the small school level.
