Overall Contenders & Class Contenders Pre-season team rankings have problems: ... first, they are based (in large part) on last year's results ... more recent track results may or may not have relevance for the upcoming XC season ... some runners improve (some improve a lot) ... a few runners transfer or quit ... new runners can join a team and make a big difference ... So any pre-season rankings must be viewed in that context. What good are pre-season rankings? Once the XC season starts, I rank individual runners and teams based strictly on performance during the current season ... So pre-season rankings are not used during the season. To a large extent, the team listing below is just an extension of the 2014 XC season into 2015 with a few modifications ... IF data for 5 runners on each team was not readily available (or guess-able), that team is probably NOT included below ... With rare exceptions, I ignored last year's modified runners. I limited the Combined Class list to 37 teams after starting with 70+ teams. Remember ... this list is just an informational starting point ... I posted scores by individual class because some people are interested ... A lot can change between mid-July and November.

Where did the scores come from? ... In part, the scores are a composite of computer race simulations using 2014 seasonal speed ratings ... a few speed ratings were altered based on track results ... I manually manipulated some numbers because I wanted to ... and then adjusted final scores for various reasons. Note ... The scores are simply my pre-season "guess" of relative team abilities in a combined race ... I included 37 teams to show some depth. In General ... The top three teams, Fayetteville-Manlius, Saratoga and Shenendehowa, are the three New York teams that competed at NXN Nationals last year ..... Fayetteville-Manlius is the defending NXN National champion and FM has won 8 of the last 9 NXN National titles ... Overall, I give Fayetteville-Manlius a slight advantage because of their winning tradition and an ability to reload ... BUT this season might be a very close competition with other teams and it depends on a variety of factors that are uncertain at this time ... It is conceivable that Fayetteville-Manlius could end up as the #3 NY team at the NXN New York Regional. The uncertainty factors include the ability to reload effectively and the impact of new runners, either expected or otherwise ... My term for this is "new blood" (e.g. soccer transfers, first time XC runners, etc) which I discussed in an article 8 years ago ... For example, how much of an impact will new runners have for FM and Saratoga (such as Phobe White and Kelsey Chmiel)?? ... How much will returning XC runners improve from last year?? ... What about effective team depth or the impact of an injury/illness?? Fayetteville-Manlius, Saratoga and Shenendehowa have additional comments below in the Class A section. Additional comments and information are given below by class ... Class consideration is important in the pre-season because it impacts far more runners than projections intended for Federation Championships or the NXN-NY regional qualifier.

Fayetteville-Manlius, Saratoga and Shenendehowa are the top three teams in Class A ... Individual profiles for five FM, five Saratoga and two Shenendehowa girls are available on the Girls Individual Profiles page. Fayetteville-Manlius returns their top 3 runners from last year's State Class A Championship ... FM lost 3 runners to graduation from the State and NXN teams including 2 scorers ... With stiff competition from Saratoga and Shenendehowa, FM will need to reload effective scorers at those two positions in order to repeat as the top team in NY ... FM has developed at least one new "high-level" performer every year since they began their "national" winning in 2006 ... So I give FM the benefit-of-the-doubt and expect it will happen again this year. Saratoga returns 6 of 7 runners from last year's State and NXN teams, and 4 were freshmen and one was an 8th-grader last year ... How much will they improve ... We won't know until the season begins ... Saratoga looks deep at a high level, and that's before the inclusion of the "new" runner Kelsey Chmiel who was very good in track ... Saratoga has all the ingredients of a top State and National team, but more on that when I post my Pre-season National Team Rankings ... As good as Saratoga looks, they first need to get by Shenendehowa at sectionals to make it to the State Meet ... Last year, Saratoga beat Shenendehowa at sectionals in a tie-breaker ....... New York lays claim to being the only State in the US that excludes nationally ranked teams from their State Meet because they did not win a sectional race. Shenendehowa returns 6 of 7 runners including their top 4 runners from sectionals ... Shenendehowa is an improving team and deserves to be watched closely ... They have some depth ... On a good performance, Shenendehowa has the potential to post speed ratings that merit consideration of an NXN podium team. Monroe-Woodbury returns 6 of 7 runners including all 5 scorers from last year's State Meet ... and this year's State Meet is at Monroe-Woodbury. North Rockland should be interesting to watch ... Last year's top runner (Alex Harris) has shown major improvement throughout track (how that impacts the XC season remains to be seen) ... North Rockland is adding two new 8th-grade runners; Katelyn Tuohy popped some huge track times including some State 7th-grade records; Haleigh Morales could also have a big impact ... Projecting the North Rockland team score is a guess.

Burnt Hills is the defending Class B champion and the favorite to win again ... Burnt Hills returns their top 3 runners from States to go along with very good depth at the next two scoring positions, and makes them the favorite. North Shore finished a very good 3rd at States last year and appears to be a serious challenger for the Class B title ... North Shore returns their top 3 runners from States plus 3 other runners from States. Shoreham Wading River finished 4th at States last year and return their top 6 runners including the Class B champion (Katherine Lee) ..... Pearl River finished 5th at States last year and return their top 2 runners plus 3 other runners from States ..... Queensbury was the Class B champion in 2013 but lost to Burnt Hills at sectionals last year.

Last year, East Aurora dropped from Class B to Class C and beat Bronxville, the perennial Class C champion, by only 3 points. East Aurora returns their 3 top scorers from States, plus their #5 and #6 runners and appear to be the top Class C team entering the 2015 XC season. Bronxville loses their top runner from States last year to graduation, but return all 6 remaining runners. As noted last year ... Barring significant improvement from other Class C teams, the State Meet might be something of a dual-meet between East Aurora and Bronxville ... That type of scoring compresses the scoring gap between the two teams which could make the race very close ... It appears to me that the #4 and #5 scorers will be a major factor in determining the winner. Lots of uncertainty in projecting the next groups of teams.

Tully is the defending Class D champion ... Two years ago, Tully dropped from Class C to Class D which helped them win the last two Class D titles ... This year Greenwich drops from Class C to Class D and Greenwich becomes the pre-season favorite. Greenwich finished a very good 3rd at States last year in Class C only about 30 points behind East Aurora and Bronxville ... Their top four scorers from States return (and one of the normal scorers did not race at States) ... Greenwich takes the favorite spot from Tully. Tully returns their top 5 runners from States ... In addition, Tully is expected to have two new runners who might impact the scoring positions ... Tully should be a serious challenger to defend their State Class D title. As normal, lots of uncertainty in projecting the other Class D teams (it's a real guess at this point) ..... Talented new runners can have a major impact on team scoring, especially at the small school level.

Notre Dame is the clear favorite
in this group ... Notre Dame won the CHSAA Championship
last year and return all of their top runners. Hackley and the Convent of the Sacred Heart not far apart in the NYSAIS Federation. Lots of uncertainty for many of the other teams listed above.
