Pre-Season ... National BOYS Individual Profiles/Ranks - Cross Country 2015

Below are Performance Profiles for 14 top national high school male runners entering the 2015 cross country season ... I find it interesting to examine profiles of the top national boys and also compare them to the top NY boys (Profiles for the 2015 New York Boys) ... Performance data helps evaluation ... and knowing the performance level of the best national runners is always interesting ..... Opinions will differ on the ranking position of individual runners, but that's a good thing ... It's also a "necessary thing" for serious handicappers ... The order of the runners below is my current pre-season opinion ... And a bunch of NY runners are included below (the most I have ever seen during pre-season at this level).

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2015 XC season. The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster). Selected track data is also shown.

#1 - Andrew Hunter 12 Loudoun Valley HS Virginia

Andrew Hunter is the top returning runner from Footlocker Nationals where he finished 4th ... He was undefeated in XC 2014 until Footlocker in December ... He popped a big speed rating of 202 in winning the Virginia 3A State Meet and won the Great American Race of Champions.

Andrew demonstrated exceptional speed during track and beat Grant Fisher at both the Brooks PR Invite 2-Mile and and US Junior Nationals 1500m ... His 2-Mile win at Brooks (8:42.51) included a final 400m lap in 54.8 which is remarkable ... Andrew Hunter enters the 2015 XC season as the top-rated harrier in the nation.

Austin Tamagno finished 5th at Footlocker Nationals (only 1.3 seconds behind Andrew Hunter) ... He was California State champion (D3) and he set a course record at the Mt. SAC Invitational ...... In track, Austin set PRs at all distances including the 3200m (8:54.13), Mile (4:06.26) and 800m (1:52.33) ... Last year, Austin chose to compete at Footlocker rather than compete with the Brea Orlindo team at NXN ... He enters the XC season as the #2 rated-runner in America.

Ben Veatch is the top returning runner from NXN Nationals where he finished an excellent 7th ... Also qualified for Footlocker Nationals and finished 14th at Footlocker to earn All-American honors ... Won the Indiana State XC race ....... In track, Ben set PRs at 3200m (8:53.42 at Arcadia which he almost duplicated in winning Indiana States) and at 1600m (4:18.16) ... Since Ben competes in the Midwest regions, he could return to both National Meets and finish better at both in 2015.

Carter Blunt competes in the South regions of both NXN and Footlocker which allows him to qualify for both National meets ... He did it last year with great success earning All-American status at Footlocker (finished 15th) and finishing 20th at NXN ... He won the NXN South Regional and was 2nd at the Footlocker Regional ........ Carter ran very well during track and won the New Balance Outdoor National 2-Mile (8:58.03) and was 2nd in the Mile(4:10.74).

Casey Clinger is the only underclassmen I am profiling nationally ... He made very nice improvements from his freshmen to sophomore seasons ... Casey finished 8th at NXN Nationals (2nd-best returning NXN runner behind Ben Veatch) ....... In track, Casey won both the 3200m and 1600m at the Utah State Championships (5A) ... Casey Clinger will likely be competing at NXN Nationals since American Fork will be a favorite to return.

Jaret Carpenter had his best XC performance at NXN Nationals where he finished 14th (5th-best returning runner from NXN) ....... Jaret showed good improvement during track with PRs at 3200m (9:05.51) and 1600m (4:13.81) ... Additional improvement in XC seems very likely for the 2015 season.

Aidan Tooker ran extremely well during the championship portion of the XC season ... he finished 4th at States (Class A), 5th at Federations, 4th at the NXN NY Regional and 36th at NXN Nationals .......Aidan set some major PRs during track including the 3200m (8:51.52 at the amazing Loucks Games race), 1-Mile (4:11.56) and the Steeplechase (9:06.37 which is the NY State Junior-Class record).

New York had 3 teams finish in the top 8 at NXN Nationals and Peter Ryan was the top NY runner at NXN Nationals where he finished an excellent 15th overall (and was the 5th best underclassmen ... the top 4 are being profiled in the Top National Boys profiles) ...... Peter Ryan did not run outdoor track the past two seasons (I believe to address the onset of some potential injury problems) ... he actually set PRs at 1600m and 3200m in an abbreviated indoor season.

Kenny Vasbinder had an outstanding XC season in 2014 and demonstrated very nice improvement from his sophomore to junior season ... He is the defending State Class C champion and finished an excellent 2nd at NY Federations (4th fastest all-time mark at Bowdoin Park) ... Finished a very good 7th at the NXN NY Regional (but unfortunately, did not qualify for Nationals) ....... East Aurora does not have indoor track team, but Kenny showed much improved outdoor track marks in 2015 compared to 2014.
