Pre-Season ... National BOYS Individual Rankings - Cross Country 2014

IBelow are Performance Profiles for 11 top national high school male runners entering the 2014 cross country season ... I find it interesting to examine profiles of the top national boys and also compare them to the top NY boys (Profiles for the 2014 New York Boys) ... Performance data helps evaluation ... and knowing the performance level of the best national runners is always interesting ..... Opinions will differ on the ranking position of individual runners, but that's a good thing ... It's also a "necessary thing" for serious handicappers ... The order of the runners below is my current pre-season opinion.

 
 

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2014 XC season.  The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster).  Selected track data is also shown.

 

 

#1 - Grant Fisher   12    Grand Blanc HS  Michigan
Grant Fisher enters the 2014 XC season as the clear #1-rated high school runner in the nation ... He is the defending Footlocker National Champion and was undefeated in XC last year.

Grant was undefeated in high school races during track ... He won the adidas Grand Prix Dream Mile in fast time (4:02.02) and won the Brooks PR Invitational 2-Mile the following week (8:51.28) ... qualified for the World Junior Championship by finishing 2nd at USATF Junior Nationals in the 1500m ... Matthew Maton is the Oregon State XC champion ... he won Footlocker West and the Oregon-Washington Border Clash ... finished 3rd at Footlocker Nationals and 3rd at the Great Edinburgh Junior 6K in Scotland.

In track, Matthew finished 2nd to Grant Fisher at the adidas Grand Prix Dream Mile (4:03.23) ... he won the Brooks PR Invitational Mile (4:06.32) ... won a fast 3000m race at the Oregon Relays (8:18.66 which is roughly equivalent to an 8:54 3200m) ...(see Marc Bloom's article in Running Times about Matthew).

Conner Mantz finished 7th at Footlocker Nationals last year and 14th in 2012 ... he qualified for NXN Nationals by finishing 2nd at the NXN Southwest Regional, but opted to run Footlocker West rather than NXN.

In track, Conner won the New Balance Indoor National 5000m (14:24.33) ... he finished 6th at the Arcadia Invitational 3200m (8:52.90) and 4th at the Brooks PR Invitational 2-Mile (8:56.62) ... he was 3rd in the 10000m at USATF Junior Nationals (31:01.25) ... Elijah Armstrong finished 6th at Footlocker Nationals (5 of the top 7 at Footlocker Nationals in 2013 were juniors ... the other 4 are profiled above) ... Elijah also qualified for NXN Nationals by finishing 2nd at the NXN Northwest Regional, but opted to run Footlocker West rather than NXN.

In track, Elijah finished 2nd at New Balance Outdoor Nationals in the 5000m and 3rd in the 5000m at Indoor Nationals ... he was 4th in the 5000m at USATF Junior Nationals ... set a 3200m PR at the Arcadia Invitational (8:55.92) ... (see Marc Bloom's article in Running Times about Elijah).

Alex Ostberg finished 11th at Footlocker Nationals (the 5 juniors at Footlocker who finished ahead of him are profiled above).

Alex won the New Balance Outdoor National 5000m with a very good performance (14:16.61) ... he set a PR in the 3200m at the Loucks Games (8:52.64) where he beat three the Northport NY guys who ran 8:53, 8:54 and 9:01 (the Northport guys, including Mike Brannigan profiled below, bettered their performance at Outdoor Nationals).

#8 - Mike Brannigan    12    Northport HS  New York  
Mike Brannigan had some excellent performances throughout XC including a win in the Champ division of the Shore Coaches Invitational at Holmdel Park in New Jersey and a win at the NXN-NY Regional (his time was the 2nd fastest time ever at Bowdoin Park, only bettered by Nick Ryan) ... Mike finished 2nd to Bryce Millar at NY States (Class A) by only 0.3 seconds.

Mike performed exceptionally well during the track seasons ... Set a 1600m PR at outdoor States where he lost to Luke Gavigan by only 0.02 seconds (4:07.84, link to race video) ... Set the NY State Junior Class 2-Mile/3200m record when winning 2-Mile at outdoor Nationals (8:53.59, which is 3rd fastest 2-Mile in NY history bettered only by Josh McDougal and John Gregorek) ... In track, Jesse won the Illinois State 3200m (9:03.60) ... set a very good PR at 1600m (4:09.50).

Bryce Millar had an excellent XC season in 2013 ... He won the State Class A race over Mike Brannigan by 0.3 of a second ... finished 2nd in the Championship race at Manhattan and 2nd in the top McQuaid race division ... finished 4th at the NXN-NY Regional ... and had five races with speed ratings in the 190s.

In track, Bryce finished a very good 2nd at outdoor States when setting his 3200m PR (9:04.26, losing by less than half-a-second to Mickey Burke, link to race video) ... also set a 1-Mile PR (4:19.39) in winning the Fleet Feet Mile at Chittenango ... He will lead FM in their quest for another State title and another trip to NXN Nationals.
