Overall Contenders & Class Contenders Pre-season team rankings have problems: ... first, they are based (in large part) on last year's results ... more recent track results may or may not have relevance for the upcoming XC season ... some runners improve (some improve a lot) ... a few runners transfer or quit ... new runners can join a team and make a big difference ... So any pre-season rankings must be viewed in that context. What good are pre-season rankings? Once the XC season starts, I rank individual runners and teams based strictly on performance during the current season ... So pre-season rankings are not used during the season. To a large extent, the team listing below is just an extension of the 2012 XC season into 2013 with a few modifications ... IF data for 5 runners on each team was not readily available (or guess-able), that team is probably NOT included below. I limited the Combined Class list to 26 teams after starting with 70+ teams. Remember ... this list is just an informational starting point ... I posted scores by individual class because some people are interested ... A lot can change between mid-July and November.

Where did the scores come from? ... In part, the scores are a composite of computer race simulations using 2012 seasonal speed ratings ... a few speed rating ranges were altered based on track results ... I manually manipulated some numbers because I wanted to ... and then adjusted final scores for various reasons. In General ... When all factors were considered (simulated scores from last season and "guesses" for the coming season and prior school history of performance, etc), it was very difficult to separate Saratoga, St. Anthony's, Liverpool and Fayetteville-Manlius, so I'm making them co-favorites entering the 2013 season. Saratoga ... One Big Caveat - the Saratoga projection excludes Gavin Gaynor who would be a top four scorer for Saratoga (rumor to me said was moving to Ohio and I found some supporting info, but I don't know for certain) ... When Gavin Gaynor is included in the Saratoga score, Saratoga would be 30-40 points in front and the sole solid favorite. Just like last year, St. Anthony's is returning a large group of runners with decent speed ratings ... For example, seven guys with overall ratings of 160 or higher and at least another five with ratings above 150 ... That's a lot of potential, and I assume a few of those runners will show improvement ... Base on 2012 numbers and depth, St. Anthony's could easily be considered the favorite. Liverpool is young, talented and improving. I have Fayetteville-Manlius projected as a possible co-favorite for several reasons ... (1) Fayetteville-Manlius finished 1st or 2nd at the NXN-NY regional in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 (proven results on an annual basis or "been-there-done-that" really does matter) ... (2) FM has been successful at developing "new blood" on both the boys and girls teams, and 2013 will likely continue that tradition. Additional comments and information are given below by class ... Class consideration is important in the pre-season because it impacts far more runners than projections intended for Federation Championships or the NXN-NY regional qualifier ... Profiles for the Top Individual NY Boys are available.

Class A - Boys ... Pre-Season 2013 |
Team Score Section-Class ------------------ ----- ------------- Saratoga 110 (02-A ) Liverpool 110 (03-A ) Fayetteville-Manlius 110 (03-A ) Northport 125 (11-A ) West Genesee 155 (03-A ) Webster Thomas 180 (05-A ) Warwick Valley 185 (09-A ) Syosset 200 (08-A ) Corning 220 (04-A ) Fairport 260 (05-A ) North Rockland 290 (01-A ) Colonie 295 (02-A ) Sachem East 305 (11-A ) Irondequoit 310 (05-A ) Bethlehem 320 (02-A ) Ithaca 330 (04-A ) Shenendehowa 330 (02-A ) Mepham 335 (08-A ) Baldwinsville 340 (03-A ) Hilton 340 (05-A ) Clarence 350 (06-A ) |
Saratoga beat Fayetteville-Manlius by one point at States last year ... Fayetteville-Manlius then beat Saratoga by 12 points at the NXN-NY Regional. As noted above in the Combined Class projection, the Saratoga projection assumes Gavin Gaynor has transferred out of Saratoga ... If he runs for Saratoga, Saratoga becomes the clear favorite to win. Fayetteville-Manlius loses Nick Ryan and two other scorers to graduation ... However, based on recent experience, I think it is reasonable to assume FM will find other good runners for the vacant scoring positions ... Bryce Millar is the top-rated runner for the teams under consideration which mean FM would start their team score with a "1" (always a nice advantage) ... How good FM will be at the replacement positions is speculation, but I'm giving them the "benefit-of-the-doubt". Liverpool could be very good ... Fayetteville-Manlius may have a very hard time winning the Section 3 team title over Liverpool ... On raw numbers alone, Liverpool has a healthy advantage over FM ... and West Genesee is another strong team in Section 3 - West Genesee returns their top six scorers from sectionals last year where they finished just one team position behind Liverpool. Like last year, Northport gets extra credit for some really good track performances ... 5 guys at 9:40 or faster at 3200m, including an 8:59 and 9:14 ... That could translate into a State title and clearly makes Northport a serious contender.

Class B could be very interesting in Section 9 since two of the top three projected teams come from Section 9 ... Port Jervis beat Cornwall by only four points at Section 9 Championships last year ... then Port Jervis finished 7th at States (but only 10 points out of 4th-place). Port Jervis returns their entire team from the State Meet ... Cornwall returns all five scorers from sectionals ... Looks very close entering 2013. Pittsford-Mendon finished a very good 3rd at States last year, but graduated their #2 and #4 scorers from States ... However, Pittsford-Mendon appears to even-up with other top two contenders. Burnt Hills finished 2nd at sectionals last year to State Class B champion Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons ... Burnt Hills could be a serious contender to win it all. Lake Shore looks very strong through four runners, but depth at the #5 scoring position is unknown ... Perennial power East Aurora graduated 5 of 7 runners from States (including their top three), so it looks like a rebuilding season ... However, don't be surprised if East Aurora reloads quickly.

Like last year, the Class C Boys
has some uncertainty ... Overall, Class C could be very
close with bunch of teams in contention for the top spot. Adirondack finished a decent 4th at Section 3 Championships last year with 3 freshmen and 3 sophomores, and get the lowest projected score entering 2013 with six underclassmen. Pawling was the State Class C last year, but graduated four runners ... Required some speculation, so I "guessed" ... Pawling seems to re-load nicely, so I think they might be in contention. Rhinebeck and Alden could be very close to Pawling ... Alden was 4th at States last year (lost only their top runner to graduation). Multiple runner improvement on most of the other teams listed above makes them a contender as well ... It could be wide-open to some extent ... To Be Determined

Mount Academy and Barker
finished 1st and 2nd at States last year, and are projected at those two
respective positions entering 2013 ... Barker graduated only
their top scorer from States ... Mount Academy graduated two
State Meet scorers, but they were deep team for Class D. Greenwich was 4th at States last year and return all six State Meet runners ... Beaver River (3rd at States last year, losing two top scorers to graduation) and Sauquoit Valley could have a good Section 3 match-up in store ... Sauquoit Valley might be the "surprise" Class D team at the State level this year ... Tully drops from Class C to Class D, and would be ranked higher, but their top returning runner will be attending school in Switzerland as part of a foreign education program.

St. Anthony's
is the solid favorite in the CHSAA entering the 2013 XC season ... St. Anthony's
has excellent depth in retuning runners ... I expect some
of those runners will show XC improvement making St. Anthony's
a serious challenger for the top spot at Federations and NXN Qualifier. Chaminade is very strong with their top three returning runners ... Improvement at the other scoring positions could make Chaminade a serious contender. In terms of enrollment numbers, I believe Collegiate would be a Class C public school (in most NYSPHSAA sections) ... Collegiate would be odds-on favorite if they were a Class C team ... Collegiate is also expected to get some "new" cross country runners that could help.
