Remember - These are my own Watch-Lists ... I make them available so viewers can see who the top individuals are and what they have done ... and I do not take the exact order of the lists too seriously (and neither should anybody else) ... Once the season begins, these lists are not used in any way to rank individual runners.

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2012 XC season. The "Class" in parentheses pertains to the 2012 XC season.  The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster).  Selected track data are also listed for most runners ... Girls XC performance database and Girls track &field performance database are available on separate web-pages.

 

 

I'm beginning the individual profiles with Mary Cain and Laura Leff followed by the top seven returning FM girls since FM will be the favorites to win NXN Nationals again in 2012

 

Mary Cain    11    Bronxville    (Section 1 - Class C)
Mary Cain is clearly one of the top high school runners in the nation ... Mary won the NY Federation XC race with the 3rd fastest time in Bowdoin history (behind Aisling Cuffe and Nicole Blood) and she was 6th at NXN Nationals ... Mary's track performances are spectacular ... her 1500m at US Juniors (4:14.74) is the 2nd fastest in US history (behind only Jordan Hasay) ... in addition to the 1500m, she set NY State outdoor records in the 800m (2:03.34) and Mile (4:39.28), and had the fastest NY time this year in 3000m (9:32.2) ... Mary enters the 2012 XC season as one of the favorites to win national honors ... Update - Mary sets National 1500m record (4:11.01) at World Junior Champs in Barcelona  Spain.

Laura Leff    11    West Genesee    (Section 3 - Class A)
Laura Leff stamped herself as one of the top XC runners in the nation by finishing an outstanding 3rd at Footlocker Nationals ... Laura was 2nd at both NY States and Federation, and the only runners who beat her (Mary Cain and Jillian Fanning), will be joining Laura on my pre-season list of the top ten XC runners in the US for the 2012 XC season.

Unfortunately, Laura had a nasty stress fracture in her foot that ended her indoor track season (as well as her outdoor track season) ... Laura won the New Balance Indoor Games mile in excellent time (4:48.96) before the injury appeared.

Jillian Fanning was undefeated in XC 2011 entering NXN Nationals ... she won the Manhattan Championship race and NY States (Class A) ... her winning time at the NXN-NY regional (17:47) placed her 5th on the all-time Bowdoin Park record list ... she finished an excellent 4th at NXN Nationals ... Jillian won the NY XC Runner-of-the-Year award ... Jillian is easily one of the best XC runners in the nation, and enters 2012 as the top-rated runner in NY.

In track, Katie runs the shorter distances ... her PR relay split of 2:11 at New Balance Indoor Nationals helped FM win the national 4x800 title.

Michelle Duffy is another "late-starter" for FM (grade-wise) ... Her 2011 XC performances below are not nearly as impressive as the other FM girls; however, they are very similar to those of Christie Rutledge the season before Christie finished 2nd at NXN.

In track, Michelle kept improving throughout the season and capped-off track with an excellent 3000m performance (10:03.88) ... Expect major improvement in XC.

CLASS B

The top-rated Class B runner entering the 2012 season is Estela Smith who
transferred from Saratoga to Holy Names. North Shore graduated the top two
Class B runners from last year (Samantha Nadel and Brianna Nerud), but
North Shore's Jessica Donohue finished 3rd to them at States, and is the
highest rated retuning Class B runner (team-mate Elizabeth Caldwell will
challenge for the top spot).

Holy Names should be a very strong team with the inclusion of Estela Smith,
and will be ranked reasonably high my National Pre-Season Team Rankings.

Mary Cain (6th at NXN Nationals plus incredible track performances) is at the
"elite national" level in cross country, and is odds-on favorite to win the Class C
title again.

Greenwich drops to Class D, and that makes Victoria Houser & Madeline Montague the
top-rated Class D runners ... Not far behind is Victoria Campanian (South Lewis);
South Lewis also drops from Class C to Class D.

Maple Grove is the defending Class D champion which sets up a good match-up at
States with Greenwich (more on that when the pre-season NY Team Rankings are posted).
