Overall Contenders & Class Contenders Pre-season team rankings have problems: ... first, they are based (in large part) on last year's results ... more recent track results may or may not have relevance for the upcoming XC season ... some runners improve (some improve a lot) ... a few runners transfer or quit ... new runners can join a team and make a big difference ... So any pre-season rankings must be viewed in that context. What good are pre-season rankings? Once the XC season starts, I rank individual runners and teams based strictly on performance during the current season ... So pre-season rankings are not used during the season. For the most part, the team listing below is just an extension of the 2011 XC season into 2012 with a few modifications ... IF data for 5 runners on each team was not readily available (or guess-able), that team is probably NOT included below ... With rare exceptions, I ignored last year's modified runners. Initially, the Combined Class List included 70+ teams, but I began removing teams with lower scores to make computer race simulations more manageable ... Other teams could be included, but time constraints are necessary ... Data on selected teams by class is also posted including relevant track times at 3000m, 1500m, 1-Mile and Steeplechase. Remember ... this list is just an informational starting point ... I posted scores by individual class (because some people are interested) ... A lot can change between mid-July and November.

Where did the scores come from? ... In part, the scores are a composite of computer race simulations using 2011 seasonal speed ratings ... a few speed ratings were altered based on track results ... I manually manipulated some numbers (because I needed to). Note ... The scores are simply my pre-season "guess" of relative team abilities in a combined race ... I included 30 teams to show some depth. In General ... Fayetteville-Manlius is the odds-on favorite entering the 2012 XC season ... FM is the six-time defending National champion and appears to be strong again this season ... Fayetteville-Manlius will be the #1 ranked team in the nation entering XC 2012 ... FM is not only the odds-on favorite in NY, they are the odds-on favorite nationally. Additional comments and information are given below by class ... Class consideration is important in the pre-season because it impacts far more runners than projections intended for Federation Championships or the NXN-NY regional qualifier. The Question of Interest involves projection for Saratoga and Holy Names ... Estela Smith transferred from Saratoga to Holy Names, and that has a big impact on any projection. Saratoga figures to be very strong again despite the loss of Smith ... Saratoga has been very successful at Federations and NXN (I expect that will continue) ... Saratoga falls into my category of "Been-There-Done-That", and Saratoga has done it consistently with different teams and different runners over the years. At the NXN-NY Regional Qualifier last year, Saratoga finished 2nd (57 pts) while Holy Names finished 5th (206 pts) ... If Estela Smith is removed from Saratoga's results and added to Holy Names results at that race, Saratoga still finishes 2nd (with 3 underclassmen as the 3 top scorers) while Holy Names (with this year's expected top six runners) finishes 4th (behind North Shore). It will be up to Holy Names to prove they can beat Saratoga ... Holy Names might have the potential to beat Saratoga plus being one of the top teams in the nation ... more on that in the Class B section below. Mary Cain (Bronxville) ... Rumors from various sources are suggesting that Mary Cain may not be running XC for the Bronxville team ... this seems to be uncertain at this point, and I have no idea what she will do this fall ... she has had a very long track season (indoors, outdoors, post-season USA Junior Championships, Olympic Trials and World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain) ... How this impacts her high school cross country season remains to be seen ... One rumor suggests a late start in XC with the goal of a national race (possibly Footlocker) ... To Be Determined.

Fayetteville-Manlius is, once
again, the defending State and National Champion
...
Fayetteville-Manlius loses only one runner from last year's State
& NXN team (Katie
Sischo) ... FM has a top national runner (Jillian Fanning)
and remarkable depth ..... Fayetteville-Manlius
has been very good in recent years at adding "new
blood" to maintain or improve overall team performance for an
upcoming season, and this year may continue that tradition ... Fayetteville-Manlius
is odds-on favorite to win national honors again in 2012. Saratoga returns three top runners (Taylor Driscoll, Keelin Hollowood and Olivia Morrow) despite the transfer of Estela Smith to Holy Names ... Saratoga has other good returning runners, and Saratoga typically comes up with new good runners every year ... So once again, I see Saratoga as one of the top teams nationally ... One uncertainty of interest is the status of Madison Carr - she missed the 2011 XC season due injury, but as can be seen below, her 2010 ratings are not much different from those of Estela Smith - if Madison Carr returns in that form, she would obviously help Saratoga. There is a lot of uncertainty in many of the other Class A teams projected above (Suffern, Cicero-North Syracuse, Shaker, Rush-Henrietta, Colonie, Valley Central, Arlington, etc) ... there's not that much difference amongst them when all factors are considered ... One new or improved runner (or one "scoring" runner who is missing) could change the balance quickly ... Real 2012 XC race results are need.

Holy Names gets transfer Estela Smith (as noted above in the combined section) ... that's obviously a huge plus ... Holy Names has two other top-runners profiled in the Individual Girls preview (Leah Triller and Catherine Maloy) ... Based on excellent track performance at 3000m (9:57) and 1500m (4:34), I can certainly foresee Catherine Maloy making a big step forward in XC performances compared to 2011 ... Kaylee Scott showed marked improvement in track, especially at 3000m (10:06); therefore, this could be another big step forward in XC performance for Holy Names ... Collectively, Holy Names has the potential to be one of the top teams in the nation ... But as noted many times in the past by me, "Cross Country is Not Track" ... The distances are longer, the terrain is not flat and smooth, the training can be different, and the weather might be a challenge ... Holy Names should be very good this fall (and they will get ranked nationally) ... "How good" remains to be determined. Burnt Hills is projected second in Class B because they have very good depth and a decent potential for improvement ... Once again, one of the good Section 2 teams will stay at home during States because only the sectional winner qualifies. North Shore (9th at NXN Nationals in 2011 despite an off-team performance at NXN) loses top national runners Samantha Nadel and Brianna Nerud ... However, North Shore still has two top runners in Jessica Donohue and Elizabeth Caldwell ... North Shore is looking for some depth at the #4 and #5-positions. Garden City could make things interesting for North Shore in Section 8 ... Garden City is a young and improving team with some good runners.

Bronxville beat Greenwich (by 3 points) at States last year, but Greenwich drops to Class D in 2012 ... This makes Bronxville the odds-on favorite to win Class C again. As noted above in the combined class comments (according to rumors), Mary Cain might or might-not be running as part the Bronxville team in 2012 ... In regards to the Class C team projections, it really doesn't matter if she competes for Bronxville ... Without her, Bronxville is still 90-100 points in front of Skaneateles. Skaneateles moves up to the number 2 spot and is favored in competitive Section 3 ... Madeline Adams showed very nice improvement during track (15th at States in the 3000m) and 8th-grader Kaitlyn Neal set a nice 3000m PR (10:54) ... In addition, Maggie Dunn is transferring to Skaneateles from neighboring Marcellus. Tully finished 3rd at States in 2011 and 2010 (and 2nd in 2009), so my Tully bias thinks the team will rebound nicely despite losing some runners to graduation. Lots of uncertainty in projecting most teams here ... Very little separates the groupings above ... For example, Tully, Fonda-Fultonville, Fredonia, Cazenovia and Newark Valley seems to be a "toss-up" amongst themselves ... To be determined as the season develops.

Class D - Girls ... Pre-Season 2012 |
Team Score Section-Class ------------------ ----- ------------- Greenwich 59 (02-D ) Maple Grove 67 (06-D ) Beaver River 160 (03-D ) Red Creek 160 (05-D ) Oakfield-Alabama 165 (05-D ) South Lewis 165 (03-D ) Remsen 180 (03-D ) Geneseo 190 (05-D ) Sauquoit Valley 190 (03-D ) Sherman 200 (06-D ) Seton Catholic-Platt 205 (07-D ) Berne-Knox-Westerlo 210 (02-D ) Norwood-Norfolk 270 (10-D ) Cooperstown 280 (03-D ) Delhi 300 (04-D ) |
Maple Grove won the Class D title
easily
last year and return their top 4 runners ... Greenwich finished a
close 2nd the Bronxville in Class C last year, and Greenwich
drops to Class D in 2012 ... Greenwich also returns their top 4
runners ... Greenwich beat Maple Grove by 98 points at the
NXN-NY regional qualifier last year. This is an interesting case of how team scores are effected by "who is in the race" ... In the projected team scores for all classes combined (above), Greenwich is projected to be 130 points ahead of Maple Grove ... But in Class D projected scores, the difference is only 8 points. Greenwich is stronger at the top-end, and that makes a big difference when teams from all classes are considered ... In Class D by itself, that strength is diminished significantly because there few runners in the 105-130 speed rating range, so Maple Grove benefits from less displacement ... And that makes the #5 runner on each team rather important.
