Overall Contenders & Class Contenders Pre-season team rankings have problems: ... first, they are based (in large part) on last year's results ... more recent track results may or may not have relevance for the upcoming XC season ... some runners improve (some improve a lot) ... a few runners transfer or quit ... new runners can join a team and make a big difference ... So any pre-season rankings must be viewed in that context. What good are pre-season rankings? Once the XC season starts, I rank individual runners and teams based strictly on performance during the current season ... So pre-season rankings are not used during the season. For the most part, the team listing below is just an extension of the 2009 XC season into 2010 with a few modifications ... IF data for 5 runners on each team was not readily available (or guess-able), that team is probably NOT included below ... With rare exceptions, I ignored last year's modified runners. Initially, the Combined Class List included 60+ teams, but I began removing teams with lower scores to make computer race simulations more manageable ... Other teams could be included, but time constraints are necessary ... Data on selected teams by class is also posted including relevant track times at 3000m, 1500m, 1-Mile and Steeplechase. Remember ... this list is just an informational starting point ... I posted scores by individual class (because some people are interested) ... A lot can change between early August and November.

Where did the scores come from? ... In part, the scores are a composite of computer race simulations using 2009 seasonal speed ratings ... a few speed rating ranges were altered based on track results ... I manually manipulated some numbers (because I wanted to). Note ... The scores are simply my pre-season "guess" of relative team abilities in a combined race ... I included 30 teams because Tully was falling into 25-30 place range, and I wanted to include Tully. In General ... Fayetteville-Manlius is the favorite entering the 2010 XC season ... FM is the four-time defending National champion and appears to be strong again this season ... Saratoga figures to be a very strong challenger for the top spot ... Additional information is given below by class.

Class AA - Girls ... Pre-Season 2010 |
Team Score Section-Class ------------------ ----- ------------- Fayetteville-Manlius 43 (03-AA) Saratoga 50 (02-AA) Monroe-Woodbury 150 (09-AA) North Rockland 150 (01-AA) Shenendehowa 160 (02-AA) Ward Melville 165 (11-AA) Smithtown 200 (11-AA) Warwick Valley 200 (09-AA) Northport 210 (11-AA) Guilderland 215 (02-AA) Fairport 225 (05-AA) Arlington 235 (01-AA) West Genesee 245 (03-AA) |
Not only is Fayetteville-Manlius is the
four-time defending NXN National Champion, FM is four-time
defending NY State Class AA Champion ... and winning the NY State Girls
Class AA race can be just as hard as winning NXN
(maybe harder judging by some scores). Fayetteville-Manlius returns four runners from last year's State & NXN teams (Courtney Chapman, Jillian Fanning, Katie Sischo and Heather Martin) ... FM graduated some outstanding girls (Mackenzie Carter, Molly Malone and Hannah Luber) ... Entering the 2009 XC season, Jillian Fanning and Heather Martin were new to XC and were examples of "new blood" that maintain or improve overall team performance for the upcoming season. With the the loss of three key runners from the 2009 team, Fayetteville-Manlius is looking for runners to fill the #5 through #7-positions ... Once again, FM is getting some "new blood" (this time via transfer) in runner Katie Brislin (formerly the top runner at CBA-Syracuse who lives in the FM school district) ... sophomore Katie Brislin has proven ability at XC (she was 10th at States (Class C) in 2008 and 7th in 2009 (despite being affected by flu)) ... freshman Maggie Malone raced well in several varsity XC races last season as an 8th-grader and ran some good track performances (3000m -10:43, 1500m - 5:05, Steeple - 7:29) ... Christie Rutledge also had some good outdoor track performances (3000m - 10:47, 1500m - 5:01) ... Several girls on FM's junior high team from last year are promising (including Leah Monsour) ... So I expect FM will fine at the scoring positions and, perhaps, even through all seven runners. Fayetteville-Manlius does not face a serious challenge at the league or sectional level in NY ... In recent years, the FM varsity has run only two or three invitational races during the season ... the Manhattan Invitational is always one of them ... FM skipped McQuaid last season because it was on back-to-back weekends with Manhattan (plus other conflicts), and McQuaid is on back-to-back weekends with Manhattan again this season ... FM usually runs the sectional championship course which is Vernon-Verona-Sherrill this season (and is also the NY State Championship course in 2011); however, the invitational date is Sept 18th which is Yom Kippur, and the FM school district typically does not allow sports competitions on Jewish holidays (so I don't know about that race). In 2009, the one race that seemed a major threat to Fayetteville-Manlius was the NY State Class AA race at Plattsburgh where FM would face Saratoga ... The course was a flat layout that seemed advantageous to a speed team such as Saratoga ... FM coaches Bill & John Aris prepared the team for an all-out effort and team executed the race plan to perfection in one of the best team performances in US history (FM swept the top five places) .... This year's NY State Class AA confrontation with Saratoga at Pawling's Lakeside Park at 9:00am in the morning on Nov 13th could be a classic. Saratoga coaches Art and Linda Kranick have produced championship teams at Saratoga for many years, and this year's team is expected to be exceptionally good despite the graduation of Brianne Bellon and Cassie Goutos because Saratoga is remarkably deep in talent ... Saratoga finished 2nd to FM at NXN Nationals in 2009 and the top four finishers at NXN all return ... PLUS, Saratoga gets one "new blood" transfer talent and one possible "new found" distance star. Saratoga's "new blood" XC talent is Molly Pezzulo who ran for Burnt Hills XC in 2009 ... she finished 7th in the Suburban Council League Championship (which also includes Saratoga), 6th at States (Class A) and 14th and Footlocker-NE ... so Molly Pezzulo is a major addition. Saratoga's possible "new found" distance star is Margaret MacDonald ... prior to the 2009 XC season, Margaret MacDonald had proven short distance speed in track (multiple 0:59 races at 400 meters), and then ran 2009 XC at a speed rating level of 115 before tailing off (probably due to sickness or injury) ... In 2010 track, she extended her speed performance distances to 800m (2:13) and 1500m (4:34) ... On July 4th, she ran a 4-mile road race averaging 6:03 per mile and on July 24th, she was the top Saratoga runner in a 5K certified road race running 17:52 (see Odds N'End page) ... It will be very interesting to see her XC performances in 2010. Picking the Top Team Between Fayetteville-Manlius and Saratoga ... This requires some educated guess-work ... In general, I assumed Molly Pezzulo would run at her 2009 level (plus or minus) ... that Katie Brislin would run at her early 2009 levels (before she caught H1N1-flu) ... and that Margaret MacDonald might run anywhere between last year's best level and at a level comparable to Keelin Hollowood (a sizeable distribution) ... A few million computer-simulated races later says Fayetteville-Manlius has a slight advantage over Saratoga, with both teams capable of winning (no surprise) ... As happened last year and could well happen this year, FM's advantage is their top runner's ability to beat Saratoga's top runners consistently ... Until actual race results show otherwise, it seems that Courtney Chapman and Jillian Fanning will go one-two on Saratoga with Katie Sischo going either three or four ... as long as FM's #5 races decently, Fayetteville-Manlius is the favorite. Saratoga picking up Molly Pezzulo and Margaret MacDonald is interesting from a handicapping "forensic" viewpoint ... In general, these additions simply replace the two graduates (Bellon and Goutos), but overall, Saratoga could be more consistent at a higher level (Saratoga is very deep, but there have been some inconsistent performances which "might" be mitigated by depth) .... With FM perhaps at a slightly lower level than 2009, Saratoga gets closer ... 2010 will be very interesting ... It's great having the two best teams in the nation competing head-to-head in NY (at least until somebody beats them at NXN Portland Meadows because that's now the benchmark for national ranking). The Other Class AA Teams ... Monroe-Woodbury and North Rockland seem evenly matched with Shenendehowa and Ward Melville close behind ... Overall it is a toss-up with just one or two improved runners making a big difference in the scores ... Warwick Valley might well move up (Jackie Kasal could emerge as a top runner in NY). |

Queensbury is the defending Class
A champion and they return four of their top five runners from States
including top stars Brittany and Danielle Winslow ...
Queensbury finished 7th at NXN Nationals in 2009 and 5th in 2008
which demonstrates experience and performance at a national level. Queensbury has some question marks that will be answered as fall racing progresses ... Carly Wynn was off-form at the end of last season (sickness-injury) and does not run track; however, she was the 2010 NY State Combined Nordic Ski Champion (and did run a 5:28 road race mile in May) ... Jolie Navatka set significant PRs at all distances in spring track that could portend an improved XC season ... The biggest question mark appears to be performance level at the #5-position, but the returning level is similar to Queensbury's #5 at NXN which got them 7th in the nation ... Queensbury had a deep and talented junior high team last year, and I suspect they will have able runners at the #5 through #7 positions this year ... Once again, Queensbury is entering the XC season as one of the 10 best teams in the nation. North Shore and Honeoye Falls-Lima move up from Class B; last year at States, they finished 3rd and 2nd, respectively, to East Aurora. If the scores were based primarily on track performances, North Shore would move up in the scoring and be second, but I put more faith in XC performances ... In that regard, North Shore was somewhat inconsistent last year (but North Shore was plagued by injury and sickness) ... They clearly have the potential to be a top team in 2010 ... (Update - found out that Gabriella Vezza (the #5 runner from last season) is transferring to St. Anthony's ... North Shore's core of top runners remains intact, so I'm leaving the score as is). Burnt Hills lost Molly Pezzulo (transfer to Saratoga), but they still have a talented team capable of performing very well. Section 5 has three good Class A teams in Canandaigua, Pittsford Mendon and Honeoye Falls-Lima ... Unfortunately, only one of them can qualify for States ... all three have talented teams. |

Entering 2010, East Aurora is the
favorite in Class B with Pearl River in contention .... the other
teams seem to be well behind unless they receive a significant influx of
new talent .... North Shore
and Honeoye Falls-Lima move up to Class A. East Aurora lost top runner Catherine Phillips to graduation, but they return the next six runners from last year's State Class B Championship team, and that makes East Aurora the favorite ... Considering all classes, East Aurora appears to be in the top four or five in NY State ... Coach Walt McLaughlin always develops good team depth. Pearl River finished 4th at States in 2009 (behind North Shore and Honeoye Falls) and return 6 of the 7 State runners, including their top three ... Coach Dan Doherty's team is in contention. |

Last year at States, Bronxville beat Tully (by 24 points) followed by Newark Valley, Fredonia and Rhinebeck ... This year, Greenwich moves up to Class C from Class D, and Greenwich was Class D champion in 2009 (winning by 56 points). Bronxville graduated star-runner Henrietta Miers, but are adding freshman Mary Cain (a proven distance performer on the track) ... the next five girls listed below are all freshmen or sophomores with proven XC records ... Meredith Rizzo figures to be one of the top Class C runners in the State giving Bronxville an outstanding one-two ... and I believe coach Jim Mitchell is expecting some improvement from other runners ... This makes Bronxville a solid favorite in Class C. Greenwich moves up, but graduated some top runners (Roxanne Henningson & Brittney Lane) ...They still have a good core of returning runners which places them second in pre-season consideration. Tully and Holland Patent should contend for the Section 3 qualifying spot at States ... Tully returners their top five from States last year and could get some help from new runners ... If Holland Patent develops some contending runners at the #4 and #5 spots, they could make life interesting for Tully. States are being held at the Lakeside course in Pawling, so I gave Pawling some extra consideration above ... Pawling could be helped a lot if Samantha Jorgensen runs XC (track - 3000m (10:03), steeple (6:57)), but she is a star field hockey player .... Newark Valley always fields a good team and could very well improve on the pre-season position. |
