 Individual Runner Watch List - Girls 2010

NY is remarkably deep in talent ... Three Footlocker Finalists ... A host of national-caliber teams ... Plus more runners with enough talent to challenge the top runners ... 2010 will be another great cross country season in NY.

The individual profiles are not separated by class (I looked at all runners regardless of class) ... I wanted to limit the individual profiles to 10-15 runners, but I went a bit deeper to ensure coverage of that range plus runners from each class.

Below the individual profiles are my "Watch-Lists" for Class AA, A, B, C and D" ... They are arranged by last year's overall speed ratings (so "new XC runners" are not included) ... Last year's final ratings to include Federations, Footlocker and NXN.

Remember - These are my own Watch-Lists ... I make them available so viewers can see who the top individuals are and what they have done ... and I do not take the exact order of the lists too seriously (and neither should anybody else) ... Once the season begins, these lists are not used in any way to rank individual runners.

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2010 XC season. The "Class" in parentheses pertains to the 2010 XC season.  The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster).  Selected track data are also listed for most runners ... Girls XC performance database and Girls track &field performance database are available on separate web-pages.

Aisling Cuffe     12    Cornwall   (Class A - Sec 9)
Aisling Cuffe is probably the top returning distance runner in the US (although Chelsey Sveinsson fans in TX might disagree); a re-match of the two at Footlocker Finals could be special ... In XC, Aisling was the champion at Footlocker NE, NY Federation and NY States (Class A) ... she shattered the Sunken Meadow course record at Footlocker NE and won the Manhattan Championship race - simply a "WOW" XC season ... and the WOW continued all through track with multiple State class records, PRs at everything, and a truly sensational NY State 3000 Meter record at USATF Jr Nationals (9:20.94 - with incredible splits of 4:49.6 and a final 1500m in 4:31.3) ... Best HS distance runner in the US until somebody proves otherwise.

Although she didn't have her best XC races at the two NXN events (flu),  Courtney Chapman's real XC ability was shown at NY States where she led the FM sweep of the Class AA race (and Saratoga); she is the NY State Class AA winner two-years-in-a-row ... Confirmed her excellent running abilities with PRs at all distances in track including a 9:43.08 3000m ... Won the Chittenango Mile with an outstanding time of 4:54.10 on really warm, humid day.

Lizzie Predmore had nearly a 2 month gap in her XC performances between Sept and Nov (sickness, injury??), but she came on very nicely to finish 3rd at Feds and win the NXN-NY Regional ... Ran very well throughout track including a 1500m PR (4:31.38 at States) and an excellent 1600m split (4:49.48) in the DMR at the NBN Nationals; also finished 3rd at the Millrose Games Mile (4:56.07) ... Clearly a top runner and last year's "Sophomore-of-the-Year" in NY.

Set many PRs during track including a 3000m 3rd-place finish at outdoor States (9:40.17) ... finished 10th at the NBN National Mile (4:55.05) ... Colleen has speed, endurance and is a Footlocker Finalist.

To say Jillian Fanning was impressive in her first year of running would be a huge understatement ... she was remarkably consistent at a very high level throughout XC ... 3rd in the FM sweep at States ... 5th at the Manhattan Championship in only her second XC invitational race ever ... Improved throughout track and capped-off the season with an excellent 3000m PR at States (9:47.18) ... Jillian Fanning is talented, competitive and getting even better ... and last year, she NY "Freshman-of-the-Year".

Already a good runner, Brittany Winslow had some nice improvements during her junior year (and that's great to see) ... But the deciding factor (for me) was Brittany's 15th-place finish at NXN Nationals - Brittany was the top NY finisher at NXN Nationals (ahead of all the FM girls).

Katie has outstanding speed and range as demonstrated by her track PRs at 3000m (10:02.04), 1000m (2:54.43), 800m (2:11.48 relay split), and 400m (0:59.0 relay split).

Katie began the 2009 XC season with some nice results, but was hampered by the omni-present flu at the end of XC ... In track, she concentrated on the shorter races and set PRs at all distances from 400m to 1600m ... Katie's addition will help FM's team depth significantly.

NEW BLOOD for XC 2010 ... The next two profiles (Kelsey Margey & Mary Cain) are new runners expected to compete in XC 2010

Kelsey Margey    11    Harborfields   (Class A - Sec 11)
Kelsey Margey started to run competitively for the first time last year (indoor track) simply to "stay in shape for lacrosse" ... She stayed in shape nicely by winning the indoor States 1000m race (2:51.87); also broke 5:00 in the mile at The Stanner Games and Millrose Games ... After lacrosse season in the spring, Kelsey ran nicely at the Carribean Invite and then ran an outstanding time of 4:43.91 at the adidas Dream Mile ... then took 3rd at the NBN National Mile (4:49.98).

Kelsey is expected to run XC ... she has speed ... plus a 17:56.0 5K road race (not all-out) suggests endurance ... Could be really really good at XC.

Fayetteville-Manlius has 3 of the top 4 spots in Class AA entering the 2010 season.
I believe Courtney Chapman, Lizzie Predmore and Jillian Fanning could have a good
battle for the top spot with others in contention as well ... But I definitely give

Aisling Cuffe is the solid favorite to win Class A ... I believe Aisling Cuffe
is the pre-season co-favorite to be the best female high school harrier in the
nation.

Junior Kelsey Margey (Harborfields) is expected to run XC for the first time in
2010 ... she is super talent and could be expected to be very good in XC, but
trying to beat Aisling Cuffe is a very difficult challenge.
