Individual Runner Watch List - Boys 2011

The individual profiles are not separated by class (I looked at all runners regardless of class) ... I wanted to limit the individual profiles to 10-15 runners, but I went a deeper to ensure coverage of that range plus most classes.

Below the individual profiles are my "Watch-Lists" for Class A, B, C, D and CHSAA-PSAL-AIS (they are mostly sorted by last year's overall speed ratings, so "new XC runners" are not included) ... Last year's final ratings include Federations, Footlocker and NXN.

Remember - These are my own Watch-Lists ... I make them available so viewers can see who the top individuals are and what they have done ... and I do not take the exact order of the lists too seriously (and neither should anybody else) ... Once the season begins, these lists are not used in any way to rank individual runners.

Profiles of Top Returning NY State Boys

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2011 XC season. The "Class" in parentheses pertains to the 2011 XC season. The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster). Selected track data are also listed for most runners. My Boys XC performance database and Boys track & field performance database are available on separate web-pages.

Note - Classes Based on Proposed Cut-Offs for 2011 (could change) ...

Nick Ryan 11 Fayetteville-Manlius (Section 3 - Class A)

Several runners seem to be co-favorites with regards to being the "top-rated NY cross country runner entering the 2011 season", and Nick Ryan is one of them ... Nick had a huge XC improvement from his freshman to sophomore season ... His best XC performances came at NXN Regionals and Nationals, and that helped the FM guys take 2nd-place nationally.

Nick set some big PRs during track ... At Outdoor States, his 3200m time (9:11.86) was only 3 seconds off the NY State Sophomore record (9:08.61 by John Trautmann in 1984) ... Nick also clocked a fast 1600m (4:20.68) ... It will be interesting to see his junior-class XC performance level in comparison to previous FM runners (such as Tommy Gruenewald and Alex Hatz).

Christian Delago 12 Shaker (Section 2 - Class A)

Christian Delago ran very well at States, Feds and NXN Regional last season ... his 8th-place finish at Feds was the top finish for all underclassmen.

Ran very good times throughout track at 800m to a mile ... split a very fast 800m relay leg at New Balance Outdoor Nationals (1:51.45) and a fast 1600m relay split indoors (4:15.41) ... Definitely a co-favorite to be top individual runner in NY ... and a member of a Shaker team that should be highly-ranked nationally.

Thomas Awad 12 Chaminade (CHSAA )

Thomas Awad was beginning to improve nicely at the end of XC 2010 ... he finished 12th at Feds (3rd-best underclassman) and 11th at NXN Regional (just missed qualifying for Nationals).

Thomas ran very well throughout track and, at Outdoor States, set two excellent PRs at 3200m (9:09.83) and 1600m (4:12.86) ... he was 2nd at Indoor States in the 1600m (4:20.03) and 7th at the Penn Relays Mile (4:15.30) ... a serious contender to be top XC runner in NY State.

Dan Lennon 12 Peru (Section 7 - Class B)

Dan Lennon ran cross country for the first time ever last season as a junior ... Dan was a former football player

... And his first season was remarkably good - Dan was 2nd at States (Class B) and 11th at Feds (2nd-best underclassman) .

Dan ran some outstanding times in track including the 3200m (9:07.52 at Loucks and 9:09.37 at States) and the 1600m (4:19.30, which was 10th at States) ... Another a serious contender to be top XC runner in NY.

Michael Libruk was the top Shaker runner at NXN Nationals last year ... he ran at a high-level consistently throughout the XC season, including a 7th at States and 8th at NXN Regional ... Set track PRs at 1600m (4:19.63) and 3200m (9:30.35) ... Along with team-mates Christian Delago and Jon Vallecorsa, Shaker has a solid nucleus for a top-rated team.

Thomas Diliberto 12 St. Anthony's (CHSAA)

Thomas Diliberto had a much-improved 2010 XC season and finished 2nd at the CHSAA Championship race ... Set some very nice PRs in track including the 1600m (4:21.77), 3200m (9:20.08 at Loucks), 3000m Steeple (9:31.50 at USATF Juniors), and 2000m Steeple (6:04.76, 3rd at Nationals) ... Seems to be an improving runner who might provide competition for the top-rated runners ... A definite runner to watch in 2011.

 CLASS A

I think Nick Ryan might be a slight favorite over Christian Delago, but it's very
close entering the season ... Nick had the better performances at NXN Regionals
and Nationals plus really good distance performances in outdoor track ... 
A number of Class A guys are close and you know somebody (probably more than
one) will improve significantly (I'm not sure who) ... Until I see 2011 results,
the top two are co-favorites.
