 Individual Runner Watch List - Girls 2009

I repeat myself every year -> NY is remarkably deep in talent ... Two Footlocker Finalists ... A host of national-caliber teams ... Plus more runners with enough talent to challenge the top runners ... 2009 will be another great cross country season in NY.

The individual profiles are not separated by class (I looked at all runners regardless of class) ... I wanted to limit the individual profiles to 10-15 runners, but I went a bit deeper to ensure coverage of that range plus runners from each class.

Below the individual profiles are my "Watch-Lists" for Class AA, A, B, C and D" ... They are arranged by last year's overall speed ratings (so "new XC runners" are not included) ... I re-did the last year's final ratings to include Federations, Footlocker and NXN.

Remember - These are my own Watch-Lists ... I make them available so viewers can see who the top individuals are and what they have done ... and I do not take the exact order of the lists too seriously (and neither should anybody else) ... Once the season begins, these lists are not used in any way to rank individual runners.

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2009 XC season. The "Class" in parentheses pertains to the 2009 XC season.  The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster).  Selected track data are also listed for most runners ... Girls XC performance database and Girls track &field performance database are available on separate web-pages.

 

 

Emily Lipari    12     Roslyn    (Class A - Sec 8)
Emily Lipari is the two-time defending NY State Federation Champion and the #1 pre-season rated harrier from last year ... Emily qualified for Footlocker Finals for the second straight year (despite being sick at the Footlocker-NE qualifier) and finished 11th at Footlocker Finals ... In track, Emily was excellent once again running fast times and PRs at most distances, such as a 4:47.44 Mile to win Indoor NIN Nationals ... she repeated as the NY State Outdoor 3000m champion (9:38.66) ... Just like last year, these outstanding performances stamp Emily Lipari as the top returning harrier in NY State and one of the best in the nation ... BUT NY State is loaded, and Emily will have some stiff competition.

Aisling Cuffe    11    Cornwall    (Class A - Sec 9)
Simply watch Aisling Cuffe race and you will see the talent and determination of this impressive runner ... I see parallels to Aislinn Ryan (Warwick) who is the last NY State Footlocker Champion (also from Section 9) ... both demonstrated marked improvement in track from their freshmen to sophomore years ... both qualified for Footlocker as sophomores and both finished 12th at Footlocker Finals .

Aisling Cuffe was 2nd at XC Feds and 2nd in the 3000m at Outdoor States (both races won by Emily Lipari) ... Aisling then stepped up an finished 5th in the 2-Mile at NON Nationals [her time of 10:25.43 is the 5th fastest by a NYer (only Molly Huddle, Nicole Blood, Aislinn Ryan and Kate Landau have run faster) ... Aisling's impressive USATF Junior 5000m win at Hayward Field in Oregon (16:43.58) indicates she is one of best runners nationally, and I think she will get even better.

Courtney Chapman    11     Fayetteville-Manlius    (Class AA - Sec 3)
Just like pre-season last year, Courtney Chapman was the top FM runner at States and NXN Championships (and FM was the best team in the nation) ... Courtney's Federation time in 2007 (18:03.8) ranks her as the 7th-fastest girl ever at Bowdoin Park ... She had the fastest time at States at Sunken Meadow (18:12.9 which is the 3rd best time ever at Sunken Meadow)  ... In track, Courtney set PRs at 800m (2:17 relay split), 1000m (2:59.02) and1500m (4:37.02), and barely missed a 3000m PR (with a time of 9:48.84).

Danielle Winslow had an outstanding sophomore season in XC ... she was 3rd at Manhattan, 3rd at States (Class A), 3rd at Federations, 1st at NXN-NY Qualifier, and an excellent 4th at NXN Nationals ... During the winter, Danielle was a top Nordic skier (she was a member of the State winning relay team and the #3 individual in the Nordic Combined at States) ... In outdoor track, she ran some decent times including a 1500m PR (4:38.81).

As an 8th-grader, Lizzie Predmore demonstrated the potential to become one of the elite runners in NY State, and as a freshmen last year, she realized that potential ... Her 10th at Federation was a bit of an off-race, but she then qualified for NXN as an individual and finished an excellent 6th at NXN Nationals ... Lizzie won the tough Suburban Council XC race with an outstanding time of 16:58 at Saratoga Park ... In track, Lizzie popped PRs at every distance including 3000m (9:49.58) and a very good 4:57.91 1600m relay split in the NON National DMR.

Samantha Nadel     10    North Shore   (Class B - Sec 8)
Samantha Nadel ran well throughout much of the XC season ... she won the Varsity D race at Manhattan, placed 3rd at States (Class B) and finished a very good 8th at Federations.

Samantha's talent was really demonstrated in track with huge PRs and excellent finishes at State and national meets ... she was 2nd at NIN Nationals in the 5000m (17:15.38), 4th at Outdoor States in the 3000m (9:48.42) and 6th at 1500m (4:33.41), and 3rd at Loucks 3200m (excellent time of 10:24) ... Samantha can be expected to be a real force this coming XC season.

Lauren Mullins does not get much publicity state-wide, but she is one of the top runners in NY State ... In XC, she was 2nd at States (Class B), an excellent 5th at Federations and 16th at Footlocker-NE ... In track, Lauren set big PRs at all distances including a 9th at States 3000m (10:04.32) and 7th at States 1500m (4:34.70).

Keelin Hollowood     9    Saratoga     (Class AA - Sec 2)
Keelin Hollowood is the one of only three incoming freshmen to make my Profile Watch List ... she ran well during XC, including a 15th-place finish at Federations ... Keelin's "potential" to become an elite runner in NY was realized during the outdoor track season with some exceptional performances ... she finished 3rd in the 3000m at the Section 2 State Qualifier with an excellent time of 9:54.7 (but did not qualify for States) ... so she returned the next day and qualified in the 1500m (4:36.0) ... At States, Keelin finished 5th in the 1500m with a PR of 4:33.02 (which is the fastest 1500m race time ever by a NY 8th-grader, although Nicole Blood has a 1-Mile "enroute" time slightly faster) ... IF Keelin's track improvements translate to XC, the girls at the top had better keep "watch".

Megan Patrignelli    12    Monroe-Woodbury    (Class AA - Sec 9)
I have always excluded non-returning XC runners from my Profiles, but I believe Megan Patrignelli deserves an exception ... Megan told me at States she was planning to run XC in 2009; she played soccer in previous autumn seasons.

This could be really interesting ... Megan has never run a race longer than 1500 meters, and she has run only four 1500m races ... Of course, those four 1500m races were sensational including an impressive win at States (4:25.65) ... Only five NY girls have run 1500m faster than Megan in State history ... I wonder how Megan will do in her 4th XC race?? ... The NY Girls are loaded with talent - This could be the best overall group I have ever seen, and Megan Patrignelli could well be an additional "elite" XC runner.

Four Fayetteville-Manlius Runners:

Molly Malone    12     Fayetteville-Manlius    (Class AA - Sec 3)
Molly Malone made a big step forward in her XC performances in 2007 and maintained that improvement in 2008 ... she finished a very good 6th at States (Class AA), 5th at NXN Regions, 13th at  Manhattan and 4th at McQuaid ... Molly skipped indoor track (like several other FM runners) and prepared for outdoor track ... Molly has always shown excellent short distance speed and she set the Section 3 record at 800m (2:09.93) breaking the 1980 record of Tully's Linda Kinney ... At 2008 Outdoor States, Molly lowered her 1500m PR by 6 seconds to finish 5th (4:36.92) ... at 2009 States, she lowered it to 4:30.70 in finishing 4th.

Mackenzie Carter has been consistently good and a key factor in FM's three-year reign as national champions, and there's no reason to believe that will not continue in 2009 ... She skipped indoor track, but continued training for outdoor track and cross country ... Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with a case of "mono" which put the outdoor season in jeopardy ... Mackenzie decided to run some outdoor races (mostly relays) and was clearly not 100% for a while ... But her performance at States (an 800m relay split of 2:14, a PR by nearly 4 seconds) erased any doubts of her fitness.

Katie Sischo was running very well during XC 2008 ... she won a division of the Chittenango Invite, finished 7th at McQuaid and then finished a very good 12th at Manhattan Eastern State Championships ... At sectional championships at Jamesville Beach, Katie was running well until she took a bad-step near the end of the race, heard a "pop", felt pain, but still finished the race (limping) ... a diagnosed broken bone ended her XC season ... Katie returned to competition in outdoor track and looked good with decent times at 1500m (4:50), 3000m (10:36) and the 4x800 relay.

Molly Pezzulo finished a very good 7th at Federations which helped Burnt Hills win the Federation team title ... Her best speed ratings in 2008 and 2007 (excellent ratings of 142-146) came at Saratoga Park (similar to many other runners from Section 2) ... During in indoor and outdoor track season, Molly set PRs at 1500m (4:37.74) and 3000m (9:56.13) which is a nice demonstration of her continuing improvement.

I found her final 2009 outdoor track races to be very impressive, and perhaps an omen fro the coming year ... Her 10:03.3 time in the 3000m at State Qualifiers was a PR (and that's impressive for a runner who has been good for so long).

Christine made some really nice improvements in outdoor track 2009 compared to 2008 ... she won the unseeded heat of the 3000m at States with a nice PR of 10:03.82 (12.4 seconds better than her season-best at that time and 18 seconds better than her PR entering 2009) ... she also lowered her 1500m PR by nearly 20 seconds from 2008 (to 4:36.85)  ... I think she will have a really good XC season and move up my leaderboard.

Danika Simonson improved very nicely throughout the 2008 XC season (which I think was her first XC season) ... she was 23rd at Federations and qualified for NXN Nationals as an individual ... Danika was outstanding in track where she demonstrated both speed and endurance ... excellent 800m ability (2:13.19 in an open race and a 2:12.2 relay split) ... her 3000m PR came indoors at Yale (10:04.14), and her 2-Mile time at Hartford in May (10:51.47) converts to roughly 10:03 ... I will be real interested to see Danika's XC improvements because it will likely have a big impact Shenendehowa's challenge as a top team in NY and nationally.

Allison was beginning to return to normal as the 2009 track season ended ... Allison was the top-finishing high school girl in the July 12th Utica Boilermaker 15K (10500+ runners; she ran a 6:44 pace for the 9.3 miles or an average 5K time of 20:53 which is very decent) ... If injury-free, Allison could be the favorite to win the Class C race at States.

Katie Brislin demonstrated much talent as an 8th-grader and is definitely improving ... Finished 2nd with her best XC race at sectionals; almost dropped out of States at Sunken Meadow with a severe stitch, but after stopping, she continued and then passed many runners to finish 10th ... In track, Katie showed much improvement, especially at shorter distances  (e.g. 800m relay split of 2:19.0) ... Only ran 3000m once outdoors and set a big PR (10:38.4) ... At indoor NSIC Nationals, she finished 4th in the 7th-8th grade Mile ... The day before at NSIC, Katie was running a leg of the 4xMile Relay (unseeded heat), took the lead in the race (was going to run a very fast split), and then the officials physically prevented her from handing-off making her run an extra lap - a National Meet and the officials do NOT know the lap-count and who was leading the race.

Watch for improvement from this runner ... Katie lives within walking distance of Fayetteville-Manlius high school (and has for several years), but she attends CBA (and is expected to remain at CBA as far as I know); BUT there's something in the water in the FM school district.

Mary Kate set PRs at 3000m (10:03.33), the Steeplechase (6:50.07), 1500m (4:31.63), 1000m (2:57.53) and 800m (2:19.92) ... The Steeplechase mark makes her 7th-fastest steepler ever in NY ... The potential is clearly there for a much-improved XC season.

CLASS AA

Based on last year's ratings, Class AA is dominated by the Fayetteville-Manlius girls, and
there's no reason to think FM will not be just as good in 2009 (and is it possible another
"new" FM runner will be entering the "upper" XC leaderboard??) ... However, I expected
several runners (at a minimum) will be moving up the ratings ladder ... for starters, I
will be watching the two freshmen very closely (Keelin Hollowood and Holly Cavalluzzo) ... 
Megan Patrignelli could be very good in her first season of XC, and several runners from
Saratoga and Shenendehowa may make significant improvements (making life interesting for
FM).

CLASS C

Class C presents some interesting pre-season observations ... First, there is no overwhelming
returning champion or runner (like Erin Cawley last year) ... The top projected runner might
well be 7th-grade sensation Mary Cain (from Bronxville); but Mary did not run XC last year
(she was a swimmer), and at the time this is being written, she has not decided if she will
be running XC ... Samantha Jorgensen ran one XC race last year and won the Footlocker-NE
sophomore race, but she is a soccer player (and will remain so as far as I know) ... 
Annabel Clarke, Samantha Watson, Katie Brislin and Allison Lasnicki are all good runners.
If healthy, I would make Allison Lasnicki the favorite (I'm biased for Section 3 girls).
Likewise, I expect Katie Brislin will be much improved.
