 Individual Runner Watch List - Boys 2009
I believe New York has a good group of runners for the 2009 season....

 

The individual profiles are not separated by class (I looked at all runners regardless of class) ... I wanted to limit the individual profiles to 10-15 runners, but I went a bit deeper to ensure coverage of that range plus most classes.

Below the individual profiles are my "Watch-Lists" for  Class AA, A, B, C, D and CHSAA-PSAL-AIS ... They are arranged by last year's overall speed ratings (so "new XC runners" are not included) ... I re-did the last year's final ratings to include Federations, Footlocker and NXN.

Remember - These are my own Watch-Lists ... I make them available so viewers can see who the top individuals are and what they have done ...  and I do not take the exact order of the lists too seriously (and neither should anybody else) ... Once the season begins, these lists are not used in any way to rank individual runners.

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2009 XC season. The "Class" in parentheses pertains to the 2009 XC season. The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster).  Selected track data are also listed for most runners.  My Boys XC performance database and Boys track & field performance database are available on separate web-pages.

 

 

Alex Hatz    12     Fayetteville-Manlius   (Class AA - Sec 3)
Alex Hatz improved significantly in XC from his sophomore to junior seasons ... He finished 1st at McQuaid, 3rd at Manhattan and 1st at States ... his 15:52.7 winning time at NXN regional makes him the 12th fastest runner ever at Bowdoin ... Alex capped-off the XC season with an excellent 6th-place finish at NXN Nationals.

Alex had outstanding indoor and outdoor track seasons ... He was the State indoor 1000m champion (and set the NY State Junior record for 1000m - 2:26.44) ... He was the outdoor 1600m State champion (4:06.11 which is the 2nd-fastest 1600m ever by a NY high school runner (2nd to Mike Stahr's 4:05.7h time in 1982)) ... Alex was 2nd at NON Nationals in the Mile (4:07.28) ... he also set a 3200m PR (9:09.10) ... Alex Hatz enters the 2009 XC as the top harrier in NY and one of the very best nationally.

Max Straneva     12    Chenango Valley    (Class C - Sec 4)
Max Straneva had a much improved and outstanding 2008 XC season ... He was the State Class C champion, 2nd at Federations, 2nd at NXN regional and an excellent 11th at NXN Nationals ... Max's championship portion of the XC season was outstanding ... Chenango Valley does not have an indoor track team; However, Max finished 3rd at the NIN Nationals in the 5000m (15:10.98) ... In outdoor track, Max set PRs at 1600m (4:16.4, a nine second PR) and 3200m (9:14.96) ... Max has demonstrated improved speed (to go along with already proven XC ability), and that makes him a serious challenger to be top harrier in NY.

Alex Deir had another excellent XC season in 2008 ... he finished 2nd at States (Class B, in a competitive race won by Chris Stogsdill), took 5th at Federations and 3rd at NXN regionals ... I believe Alex plays basketball in the winter ... In outdoor track, Alex finished 2nd at States in the 3000m Steeplechase (9:24.80 PR) and won the NON National 2000m Steeple with a dramatic closing kick (5:53.12, the 4th fastest 2K Steeple in NY history).

Otis Ubriaco     11    Burnt Hills    (Class A - Sec 2)
Otis Ubriaco was NY's XC Sophomore of the Year in 2008 and Freshmen of the Year in 2007, and he is continuing to demonstrate improvement ... He finished 2nd at States (Class A, race won by Joe Whelan at Sunken Meadow), took 3rd at Federations and 12th at NXN regional ... Otis continued to run very well during track ... set big PRs at 3200m (9:09.9) and 1600m (4:18.2, Penn Relay split of 4:16.2) ... Otis has the ability to challenge for the top spot.

 The photo-left is a crop from a photo-set of the Boston Twilight 5000 meter race posted on Flickr.com ... I think the photo is Brandon Freyer ... In that May 2009 race, Brandon ran an excellent time of 14:49.62 which clearly raises expectations for the coming XC season ... Brandon transferred from Brewster HS to Pawling HS (the 2007 XC results and 2008 track results shown pertain to Brewster) ... Last XC season, Brandon won the NYRR Championship race at Van Cortlandt Park (results list the distance as 3.0 miles-4.9K) ... At Footlocker NE, he finished an excellent 15th (the only underclass ahead of him was Alex Saavedra, who is profiled below).

Quinn finished 4th at States (Class AA) and did not compete at Feds ... In track, he set PRs at 3200m (9:23.61) and 1600m (4:16.20), and took 11th at States in the 1600m (4:18.05).

Dan Harris had a very good and consistent 2008 XC season ... he was 8th at States (Class AA), 14th at Federations and 11th at NXN regional (Shenendehowa won the NXN regional and finished 7th at NXN Nationals) ... In track, Dan ran well throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons ... set his 3200m PR at Section 2 State Qualifiers (9:12.8, which did not qualify for States) ... his best-ever mile time came at NON Nationals (4:20.06 relay split) ... I think Dan Harris is entering the 2009 XC season as a real challenger for the top spots.

Alex Saavedra demonstrated much improvement throughout XC 2008 (and huge improvement from 2007) ... He was 3rd in a division at Manhattan and 13th at States (Class AA) ... Alex capped-off the XC season with an excellent 13th at Footlocker-NE which was the best finish by any underclassmen ... In track, he lowered his 3200m PR to 9:30.85 (after consistently lowering it through the indoor and outdoor seasons).

In track, Drew was 9th at Indoor States at 3200m (9:31.68), and set PRs during outdoor at 3200m (9:23.83) and 1600m (4:24.03).

Marco demonstrated excellent Mile (1600m) ability throughout indoor and outdoor track ... won the Hispanic Game Mile (4:15.14), was 5th at Millrose (4:21.31) and 3rd at Indoor States 1600m (4:20.66) ... Marco set his 1600m PR at Outdoor States where he finished 6th (4:13.73) ... I think Marco will have an improved 2009 XC season.

 I try to profile at least one or two top freshmen from the previous year who appear capable of stepping to the next level; and Charlie Carr (and Austin Lane above) are two of those incoming sophomores ... Charlie Carr finished 4th in the Footlocker-NE race and had good very ratings throughout the XC season ... Unfortunately, Charlie missed a significant portion of the track seasons with a knee injury, but returned to run 4:33 in the 1600m twice.

ALex Hatz is clearly the pre-season favorite ... There's nothing better than proven 
ability at XC, and Alex Hatz has done that; in addition, his proven ability at track
is tops in the State as well ... However, there's some really good talent in this
Class AA group; every year, several runners rise to the next level and I expect
it will happen again this year.
