Remember Kathy Kroeger (Foot Locker Champion 2006)?

A Speed Rating of 170 is a major benchmark
for high school Girls in my system of speed rating ...
Currently, I believe that 9 different girls have a speed rating
of 170 or higher (listed at the bottom of this
page)... and until just recently, I had
forgotten (and was unaware) who one of those girls was ... Oops Recollection was the result of an e-mail inquiry ... A viewer from Tennessee was wondering about Kathy Kroeger (Independence HS, Tennessee) who won Foot Locker in 2006 as a sophomore ... On the TullyRunners Foot Locker 2006 Result web-page (http://tullyrunners.com/XC2006/FLN_Finals06.htm ), I wrote the following: "Kathy Kroeger (TN) won impressively ... Although she finished second at the Footlocker South regional, Kathy Kroeger had the highest individual speed ratings of any runner in the field (she had a rating in the upper 160s at Great American and two ratings of 170+ during the season)." The viewer wanted to know if that was accurate
or just a Meylan mistake So I decided to check my old data files... |
... But I was not keeping track of high speed ratings at that time
as some type of record list (they were not that important to me as a
handicapper because the top elite runners had already separated
themselves from other runners and were identifiable enough to
handicap any upcoming race, especially for team consideration).
I found my data file for the Tennessee State
Championships in 2006 ... It contained some notes about a quick
speed rating approximation and a likely value range (being senile, I do not
remember doing it )
... and staring me in the face was Kathy Kroeger with a speed
rating of 172 ... but is also noted the value could be 170 or
171.And another file for Kroeger's
earlier Metro Championship 2006 race was showing a speed rating of
170.1 ... So what I wrote on my Foot Locker Champ Result
web-page was accurate based on those approximations ... Wow - I was
surprised But those were quick approximations which needed to be re-done ... So I spent some time gathering additional background data plus using comparison to current and recent years in Tennessee, and re-calculated the 2006 speed ratings ... I decided Kroeger's 2006 State Meet was either 170 or 171, with the more conservative value of 170.18 being my final value ... and her Metro Champ speed rating was 169 ..... Selected Kathy Kroeger race results (2006-2008) are listed below for reference (including the 2006 TN State Meet). The e-mail inquiry wanted to know why I had no
posted comparison of Kathy Kroeger to Jenna Hutchins
or even a simple mention of Kroeger this XC season when
talking about Hutchins ... Both girls were from Tennessee ...
Both were/are super high school runners ... Kroeger was a
Foot Locker Champion and had finished 2nd the following year and 6th
as a senior ... Meylan said Kroeger had 170 speed ratings, so
why no recognition? Meylan Response ... The e-mailer made
a good point ... and I'm correcting it right now ... Below are
the available high school Speed Rating data for both
Kathy Kroeger and
Jenna Hutchins ... Viewers can
scan the XC performances of both girls ... Both are exceptional ...
I forgot how good Kathy Kroger was as a sophomore (her
performances almost rival those of another exceptional sophomore
named Katelyn Tuohy Both girls are members of the "170 Speed Rating List" ... Tennessee has two (Kroeger & Hutchins), New York has two (Aisling Cuffe & Katelyn Tuohy) and California has two (Amber Trotter & Julia Stamps). Jenna Hutchins was denied an
opportunity to win Foot Locker in her 2020 junior season due to
Covid-19, but she
did post a slightly higher speed rating than Kroeger (170.77
to 170.18) ... and Hutchins' Track PRs are superior to
Kroeger's HS Track PRs, but XC is not Track even though
some people want it to be
