Note ... The scores are simply my pre-season "guess" of relative team abilities in a combined race ... I included 37 teams to show some depth.

In General ... Once again, the Section 2 Girls have three teams at the top of the combined NY pre-season projections above.

Not much separates the top three teams based on returning runner speed ratings from last year (Bethlehem, Saratoga and Guilderland).

The next two teams (Northport and Ward Melville) are within reach with a single new impact runner.

Bethlehem returns 5 of their top 6 runners from Section 2 State Quals ... Saratoga returns all top 7 runners from Section 2 State Quals ... and Guilderland returns 6 of their top 7 runners from Section 2 State Quals (but loses their #1 finisher).

Northport beat Ward Melville at the Section 11 State Quals (score of 53 to 74) ... Northport returns 6 of 7 from that race including their top 3, and Ward Melville returns their top 6.

At NXR New York, Northport finished a respectable 4th to Shenendehowa, Bethlehem and Guilderland (106-107-135-190 scores), and Northport beat Saratoga 190 to 197.

I moved Shenendehowa up in the projected team scoring above (compared to placement based strictly on speed ratings) due to their success in recent years, return of a low-stick runner and potential to re-load.

For all other teams listed - Improvement at various positions and/or inclusion of new impactful runners (which is not uncommon) could elevate them to a challenging position.

Bethlehem is the top-ranked team in Class A and the top-ranked team in NY State overall entering the 2026 XC season ... But Saratoga, Guilderland, Northport, Ward Melville and Shenendehowa will be or could be serious contenders.

As noted above, the top 5 teams all return a significant number of runners and should be good ... Shenendehowa did lose 4 runners their NXN National team, but returns an improving low-stick runner and could re-load ... Bethlehem loses just one scoring runner (#2) from their NXN National team.

As normal, Section 2 in NY needs to be watched this coming season ... as does Section 11 ... There are some very good runners on other Class A teams and adding some new talented runners could elevated them to a contender status.

Pearl River finished 2nd at Section 1 State Quals (behind eventual State B Champ John Jay Cross River) and return 6 of 7 runners including their top 3 scorers.

Burnt Hills finished 5th at last year's State Class B race and return 5 of 7 runners from that race (losing their #1 scorer).

Pittsford Mendon finished 7th at last year's State Class B race and return 5 of 7 runners including all 5 scorers.

Class B could be interesting ... New and improved runners could be the factor to determine the finish positions at the State Class B race.

The returning speed ratings suggest that 3 teams have a relatively equal chance of winning.

Voorheesville finished 4th at last year's State Class C race and returns 4 of 7 runners including their top 3 scorers ... their top speed-rated runner (Avery Grant) did not race at the State Meet.

Bronxvillle won last year's State Class C race and are the defending champion ... Bronxville returns all 7 runners ... Usually, a team with these credentials would be the favorite to win again ... but Voorheesville was missing their top speed-rated runner last year ... and South Jefferson is dropping from Class B last year to Class C this year.

South Jefferson finished 2nd at last year's State Class B race and drops to Class C this year ... they return 4 of 7 runners including 4 scorers (losing their #2 scorer) ...

East Aurora won the State Class C race in 2022, 2023 and 2024 ... East Aurora is good at reloading talent, but time will tell.

As usual, lots of uncertainty in the projections for some teams.

Saranac Lake did not race at States last year ... Saranac Lake finished a good 2nd to Saranac at the Section 7 State Qual race (all classes in a single race) ... both teams were Class C (so the Saranac Lake did not race at States, but the Saranac team did finish 2nd to Bronxville (77 to 86) at State Class C) ..... Saranac Lake drops to Class D this season, and they return 5 or their top 7 from State Quals losing one scorer (#2).

Tri-Valley is the defending State Class D Champion ... they return 6 of 7 runners (lose the #3 scorer) ... Anna Furman is a solid favorite to win the Class D race again for Tri-Valley.

Beaver River finished 3rd at last year's State Class D race ... they return 6 of 7 runners from the State Meet (but lose the #2 scorer).

Maple Hill finished 4th at last year's State Class D race ... they return all 7 runners from the State Meet.

Arkport/Canaseraga ... did not race at States last year ... they finished 2nd to Harley-Allendale-Columbia at Section 5 State Quals ... Arkport returns all 7 runners.

Harley-Allendale-Columbia finished 2nd at last year's State Class D race ... they return 5 of 7 runners from the State Meet (but lose the #1 and #4 scorer).

South Lewis drops from Class C to Class D ... they "might" have some incoming young runners that have an impact.

Pulaski finished a good 2nd to Beaver River at last year's Section 3 Championships ...they return their top 7 runners.

Like last year, lots of uncertainty in the Class D projections ... With the available data, it is difficult to separate some teams above ... Team placements 4 through 8 seem to be a toss-up at this point.

It is possible that many teams could be in hunt for a podium position at the State Meet ... (it's a guess at this point).

Talented new runners can have a major impact on team scoring, especially at the small school level.
