Note ... The scores are simply my pre-season "guess" of relative team abilities in a combined race ... I included 31 teams to show some depth. In General ... Similar to other pre-seasons, I see uncertainty in the team scores posted above ... Pre-season projections are often made with limited knowledge (or no knowledge) of incoming impact runners such as transfers (from other sports or other schools) or significantly improved runners from the previous year ... It requires guessing. --------------------- Corning enters the 2022 as a solid favorite based on speed ratings ... Corning won the State Class A race handily over Fayetteville-Manlius, did not compete in the Federation Championships and finished 2nd to Burnt Hills at NXR New York (by only 12 points) while missing their top two runners who were competing at Eastbay Northeast ... Corning returns six runners with overall speed ratings ranging from 162 to 183 ..... St. Anthony's returns seven runners with overall speed ratings ranging from 151 to 162. St. Anthony's gets the #2 spot above (entering the season) based on on depth ... However, Burnt Hills and Fayetteville-Manlius have individual runners at higher levels ... Fayetteville-Manlius has shown the ability to reload in past seasons and that is factored it "somewhat" in the projected scores above. --------------------- One or two new impact runners could make a big difference for a bunch of teams ... Should be interesting to watch the development throughout the XC season. Additional comments and information are given below by Class ... Class consideration is important in the pre-season because it impacts far more runners than projections intended for Federation Championships or the NXR-New York regional qualifier ... Profiles for the Top Individual NY Boys are available.

Class A - Boys ... Pre-Season 2022 |
Section- Team Score Class --------------------- ----- --------- 1 Corning 95 (04-A ) 2 Fayetteville-Manlius 140 (03-A ) 3 Fairport 200 (05-A ) 4 Calhoun 230 (08-A ) 5 Monroe-Woodbury 255 (09-A ) 6 Saratoga 270 (02-A ) 7 Webster Thomas 280 (05-A ) 8 Northport 310 (11-A ) 9 Shenendehowa 320 (02-A ) 10 Bay Shore 325 (11-A ) 11 Baldwinsville 330 (03-A ) 12 North Rockland 335 (01-A ) 13 Guilderland 350 (02-A ) 14 West Genesee 355 (03-A ) 15 Mamaroneck 370 (01-A ) 16 Arlington 375 (01-A ) 17 Churchville 385 (05-A ) 18 Clarence 390 (06-A ) 19 Ward Melville 400 (11-A ) 20 Niskayuna 405 (02-A ) 21 Smithtown 410 (11-A ) 22 Brighton 435 (05-A ) 23 Rush-Henrietta 440 (05-A ) 24 Liverpool 445 (03-A ) 25 Commack 450 (11-A ) |
Like all classes, the Class A preseason rankings are based primarily on available speed ratings from 2021. Corning is the favorite to win Class again in 2022 ... Corning won Class A last year defeating Fayetteville-Manlius by 49 points. Fayetteville-Manlius is a perennial top team in Class A and in NY State ... Don't be surprised if Fayetteville-Manlius shows some nice improvement during the season and closes the gap on Corning ... FM typically develops some new runners and performs well at the end-of-the-season (so I gave them credit). Fairport returns some decent depth with seven runners having overall speed ratings ranging from 148 to 164 ..... Calhoun returns five runners with overall speed ratings ranging from 146 to 168. Any team with one or more "new" good runners or noticeably improved runners can improve their ranking position by quite a bit (and perhaps, a lot).

Burnt Hills is the defending Class B Champion again ... They return six runners with overall speed ratings ranging from 148 to 178 which makes them the favorite in Class B and an NXN contender for NY. Pearl River finished 7th at last year's Class B race and returns their entire team (which could show some nice improvement). Christian Brothers (Albany) and Averrill Park are in the Section 2 with Burnt Hills, and only the winning team in Section 2 qualifies for States. I am expecting a few teams in Class B will show some big improvement.

I see lots of uncertainties in Class C ... East Aurora, Irvington and Fonda-Fultonville "seem" evenly matched based on returning speed ratings from last year. East Aurora finished 4th in Class B last year, but drops to Class C this coming season ... East Aurora losses all five scorers from last year's Class B race, but they typically have decent depth and an ability to reload. Irvington won last year's Class C race, but losses their top two runners and their #7 from the State Meet race. Fonda-Fultonville finished 3rd at last year's Class C race, and returns four scorers (but need a 5th at a higher speed rating level). As normal, lots of uncertainty with remaining teams and placement ... Placement above is simply a guess.

Tri-Valley and
Arkport-Canaseraga finished 1st and 2nd, respectively, at last
year's Class D race. Tri-Valley losses only one scorer (#4) from last year's Class D race ..... Arkport-Canaseraga losses only one scorer (#5) from last year's Class D race. Oakfield-Alabama (returns all 7 runners from sectionals) appears close to Arkport-Canaseraga based on returning speed ratings, and both are in Section 5, so only one can compete at States. As normal, there is a lot of uncertainty in the pre-season for many small school teams ... Which teams will develop the most over the course of the season is a guess. The impact of new runners (or newly motivated runners) could be really important and make a big difference.

St. Anthony's finished 3rd at CHSAA Championships last year and losses only one runner from that race (#4) ... they have good depth and could contend for an auto-qualifying spot at NXR-New York (depends on their development in relation to other contenders). Xavier finished 2nd at CHSAA Championships last year, but loses six runners to graduation from that race ... they typically have decent depth and is still a factor in this classification group. Brooklyn Technical won last year's PSAL Championship on a tie-breaker over Susan Wagner ... Brooklyn Technical returns their top two runners.
