In General ... Fayetteville-Manlius is the overall pre-season top team in New York ... FM returns a solid core of runners ... Saratoga is the #2 team, and like FM, Saratoga has proven ability at the National level.

Fayetteville-Manlius and Saratoga are the top-ranked teams in Class A and in NY State overall ... Last year, Saratoga beat FM by 1 point at States and by 2 points at the NXN New York Regional ... FM then beat Saratoga at NXN Nationals by 16 points (FM finished 4th and Saratoga finished 6th at NXN Nationals) ... The biggest difference between the two teams this coming season is the graduation of Saratoga's top runner (Kelsey Chmiel).

Fayetteville-Manlius returns their top 4 runners from NXN Nationals, and these four runners form a solid core capable of challenging for the National title once again ... Claire Walters finished 5th at NXN and is the top returning team runner from NXN ... Phoebe White was not 100% last XC season coming off an injury and could easily show XC improvement ... Grace Kaercher seems to be an improving runner ... Hannah Kaercher competed very nicely as an 8th-grader last year.

Saratoga could be very good again (even without Kelsey Chmiel) ... and Saratoga is still young (no juniors or seniors in their pre-season top 5) ... Ella Kurto was the #13 team runner (#45 overall) at NXN Nationals, and she could be improved at XC based track performances ... The development of the 3 freshmen and 8th-grader who helped Saratoga finish 6th at NXN remains to be seen, but the potential is there!

North Rockland has a strong lead duo in Katelyn Tuohy and Haleigh Morales which obviously helps the team score ... uncertainty in the other scoring positions, but looking decent entering the season.

Shenendehowa typically has talent (and they do again) ... Liverpool has a strong lead duo of Jenna Schulz and Sydney Carlson, and experience at the national meet.

Class B could be one of the most wide-open races at States ... Last year's winner (Cornwall) has moved up the Class A ... John Jay CR was 2nd at States last year, but lose 2 of their top 5 to graduation.

East Aurora is typically in the mix for a State title ... Last year, East Aurora finished 6th at States but they return their top 5 finishers from States.

Pearl River is typically one of the best Class B teams in State ... John Jay CR and Pearl River are both Section 1 teams, and only the the winning team at sectionals makes it States.

The returning speed ratings suggest many teams are capable of significant improvement ... and I have no idea which teams will make that improvement ... Therefore, lots of uncertainty could make Class B interesting.

Greenwich is the defending Class C champion ... Greenwich won the Class C title last year by 67 points (over Bronxville), and they return their entire team from States ... Greenwich is the odds-on favorite to repeat as Class C champions.

Camden is dropping down from Class B and South Lewis is moving up from Class D ... Camden returns their entire team from sectionals (where they finished 2nd) ... South Lewis returns a very strong top three (South Lewis finished 2nd to Tully at sectionals by only 1 point).

Bronxville has performed well the State Meet many times in past years.

Lots of uncertainty in projecting the next groups of teams.

Maple Grove finished a close 2nd at States last year (losing to Tully by 5 points) and return 6 of 7 runners from States (including their top 3) ... This makes Maple Grove the pre-season favorite in Class D.

Tully returns the top Class D runner (Brooke Rauber), but lose 2 of their next 3 finishers at States to graduation ... some likely improvement by returning runners and perhaps a new runner could keep Tully in contention.

Elmira Notre Dame lost to Delhi at the Section 4 Qualifier by 5 points, and Delhi finished a decent 3rd at States last year ... Elmira Notre Dame returns 6 of 7 (including their top 4) ... Delhi loses 2 of their top 4 from States to graduation.

As normal, lots of uncertainty in projecting the other Class D teams (it's a real guess at this point) ..... Talented new runners can have a major impact on team scoring, especially at the small school level.
