Pre-Season ... National GIRLS Individual Profiles/Ranks - Cross Country 2019

Below are Performance Profiles for 41 top national high school female runners entering the 2019 cross country season ... I find it interesting to examine profiles of the top national girls and also compare them to the top NY girls (Profiles for the 2019 New York Girls) ... Performance data helps evaluation ... and knowing the performance level of the best national runners is always interesting ..... Opinions will differ on the ranking position of individual runners, but that's a good thing ... It's also a "necessary thing" for serious handicappers ... The order of the runners below is my current pre-season opinion.
 

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2019 XC season.  The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster).  Selected track data are also shown .

 

 

 #1 - Katelyn Tuohy    12    North Rockland    (Section 1 - Class A)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 In 2018 and 2017, Katelyn Tuohy had the best XC seasonal performances by any female harrier in the history of US high school cross country ... Katelyn won back-to-back NXN National championships with impressive performances ... she shattered course records at many top venues ... she had three speed ratings in the 170s in 2017 and topped that with five speed ratings in the 170s in 2018 (including a 177 rating when shattering the course record at Holmdel Park in New Jersey)... She was undefeated and typically won races by large margins, and was the Overall XC Runner-of-the Year in New York in 2018 and 2017 ... Katelyn was slowed up a bit at the end of last year's XC season due to a knee issue.

Katelyn has set multiple NY State & National Class Records during both Indoor and Outdoor Track over the past two years ... During indoor track, she ran the 3000 meters in 9:01.81 at the Dr. Sanders Invite and won the New Balance 2-Mile in 9:51.05.

Katelyn Tuohy enters the 2019 season as the top-rated runner in the Nation ... It will be interesting to see her performance level this coming season.

 #2 - Sydney Masciarelli   11   Marianapolis Prep   Connecticut

 

 Sydney Masciarelli was phenomenal in her first season of Varsity cross country as a sophomore ... She played soccer in her freshmen year at Marianapolis Prep, but she had been the Massachusetts Middle School XC Champion the previous year.

Sydney won all her Varsity XC races including a sensational race against Katelynne Hart at Foot Locker Nationals ... Her time at Foot Locker Nationals (17:00.3) was the 8th fastest time ever run at Foot Locker on the Balboa course ... Earlier in the season, she ran 17:04 on the Franklin Park course in Boston breaking Shalane Flanagan's HS course record of 17:08.

Sydney played basketball during the winter season ... She was outstanding during Spring Track ... Won the 5000m (16:16.20) and 2-Mile (10:11.99) on back-to-back days at New Balance Outdoor Nationals ... At the Bentley Twilight Series, Sydney beat Aisling Cuffe in the 3000m (9:21.44 to 9:22.01) ... Aisling Cuffe is the last girl who broke 17:00 at Foot Locker on the Balboa course (Aisling won Foot Locker with a time of 16:53 in 2010).

 Katelynne Hart was exceptionally good as a freshman and she has been improving ever since ... Finished 2nd at Foot Locker Nationals the last two years with elite speed ratings (164 last year and 159 in 2017) ... Last year, Katelynne set faster race splits at Foot Locker than two-time Foot Locker champion Claudia Lane ... Her performance at Foot Locker was incredibly impressive - she led the race with open gaps until Sydney Masciarelli passed her slightly at the 3-mile mark ... Katelynne fought back gamely to re-take the lead only to be passed just before the finish.

Once again, Katelynne ran many outstanding track performances ... Set excellent PRs at 1-Mile (4:39.57, at Magis Miles), 2-Miles (9:56.13, at Brooks PR) and 800m (2:10.63).

Expect another outstanding season from Katelynne Hart.

 #4 - Abby Vanderkooi   10   Muskegon Western Michigan Christian   Michigan

 

 Abby Vanderkooi had a remarkably good freshman XC season capped off by an impressive 3rd-place finish at Foot Locker Nationals (159 speed rating) ... she started out strong with an elite speed rating in her very first race (152) indicating a she was a special talent and that ability-level continued throughout the season ... Foot Locker Nationals gave her the opportunity to compete in complete field of top runners and Abby delivered a great performance.

Abby ran very nicely throughout Track ... Her 3200m PR (10:04.18) came at an indoor meet against Katelynn Hart who beat Abby by less than 2 seconds ... Abby Vanderkooi is a competitor and one of the top runners in the nation.

 Marlee Starliper became an elite national harrier in her sophomore XC season ... and she then showed improvement during her junior season ... had three XC speed ratings in the mid-to-upper 150s last year ... Popped a big 159 speed rating at Foot Locker Northeast where she led much of race and finished 2nd to Sydney Masciarelli (who ran really well) ... Marlee has not had her best race at XC Nationals as yet, but I think this year will be different.

Marlee set Track PRs at 800m (2:09.44), 1-Mile (4:39.05), 1600m (4:37.45) and 3200m (9:54.75) ... won the USATF U20 3000m (9:29.39) and had many other excellent Track performances.

Taylor is an outstanding Track performer in addition to being a National Race-Walk Champion (she achieved the US Olympic Trials Standard in the RW) ...  Brynn Brown showed major XC improvement during last year's sophomore season ... she qualified for both NXN and Foot Locker Nationals with very good performances at the qualifying races (and had a 150 speed rating at the Texas State meet) ... Despite not racing her best at the National XC races (which should be a good experience for the coming season), she gets my #12 ranking and full profile due to some excellent Track performances ..... In March, Brynn won the Texas Distance Festival 5000m in fast time (16:25.47) ... she was an outstanding 3rd at the Brooks PR Invite 2-Mile (9:57.54) ... and won the Texas State 1600m (4:48.37) and 3200m (10:09.91).
