Below are Performance Profiles for 40 top national high school female runners entering the 2018 cross country season ... I find it interesting to examine profiles of the top national girls and also compare them to the top NY girls (Profiles for the 2018 New York Girls) ... Performance data helps evaluation ... and knowing the performance level of the best national runners is always interesting ..... Opinions will differ on the ranking position of individual runners, but that's a good thing ... It's also a "necessary thing" for serious handicappers ... The order of the runners below is my current pre-season opinion.

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2018 XC season. The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster). Selected track data are also shown .

Girls Pre-Season: ... Katelyn Tuohy and Claudia Lane - Returning National Champs Top the List

#1 - Katelyn Tuohy 11 North Rockland New York (Section 1 - Class A)

Katelyn Tuohy had the best XC season performance-wise by any harrier in the history of NY cross country ... Katelyn won NXN Nationals by an impressive 40 seconds ... she shattered the course records at Bowdoin and Van Cortlandt Parks ... and she had three speed ratings in the 170s (only time I have ever seen that by a female) ... she was undefeated and won all her races by large margins, and was obviously, the Overall XC Runner-of-the Year in NY in 2017.

Katelyn has set multiple NY State & National Class Records during both Indoor and Outdoor Track ... Won the New Balance National Outdoor Mile race in a National Record time of 4:33.87 ... also set National Records at 5K indoors (15:37.12) and 3200 meters outdoors (9:47.88).

Katelyn Tuohy enters the 2018 season as the top-rated runner in the Nation ... It will be very interesting to see her performance level this coming season.

#2 - Claudia Lane 12 Malibu HS California

Claudia Lane is the two-time defending Foot Locker Champion ... she was not 100% at Foot Locker Nationals or the Great Edinburgh race (flu-like virus) and she had an abbreviated track season due to a stress reaction in her foot ... As yet, I don't think we've seen the best of Claudia Lane and I hope she is 100% healthy and fit this coming XC season ...... Last year, I was expecting Claudia to win Foot Locker with a speed rating in the upper 160s (like 169), and that is not far behind Katelyn Touhy.

#3 - Kelsey Chmiel 12 Saratoga Springs New York (Section 2 - Class A)

Kelsey Chmiel was the NY State Junior Runner-of-the-Year in XC last year ... Kelsey finished an outstanding 2nd at NXN Nationals making her the #2 returning NXN runner behind only Kately Tuohy ... After NXN, Kelsey went to Scotland as part of a US Junior squad and won the Great Edinburgh 4K Junior race (I approximated her speed rating as 160) ... she also won the Great American race in North Carolina and Ocean State race in Rhode Island ... in the previous XC season, she won major races in Virginia and Georgia ... Kelsey runs well under any conditions and any locations ..... Gets the #3 preseason spot nationally because she beat Katelynne Hart at both NXN and Edinburgh.

As usual, Kelsey had excellent track performances both indoor and outdoor ... Won the NY State Indoor 3000 meters (9:27.88) ... was 2nd in the 2-Mile at New Balance Indoor Nationals (10:02.36) and 4th at Outdoor Nationals (10:09.65) ... was 2nd in the Millrose Games Mile (4:44.55) ..... On June 2, 2018 (the day after Section 2 State Qualifiers), Kelsey finished 10th at the Freihofer's 5K Run for Women running 16:44.4.

#4 - Katelynne Hart 11 Glenbard West HS Illinois

Katelynne Hart was exceptionally good during her freshman season, but she was even better as a sophomore ... finished 4th at NXN Nationals and an excellent 2nd at Foot Locker Nationals (159 speed rating).

Once again, Katelynne ran many outstanding track performances ... set excellent PRs at 1-Mile (4:44.63), 3200m (9:52.02) and 2-Miles (9:56.40) ... Expect another outstanding season.

Emily Covert showed major improvement during her junior seasons in XC and track ... after an off performances at NXN Nationals, Emily rebounded nicely with a 9th-place finish at Foot Locker Nationals (she is the #4 returning runner from Foot Locker) ..... Demonstrated continual improvement throughout track with PRs at 1600m (4:47.34), 3200m (10:06.19) and 2-Miles (10:05.19, hot-humid conditions at Nationals).

London set track PRs at 1-Mile (4:43.41) and 2-Miles (10:03.29) ... that 2-Mile time equates to a 3200m time of about 9:59.5 ... She is clearly one of the top runners in the nation.
