NYSPHSAA State Meet 2014 - Projections & Preview 2014 |
Please remember:
the projected scores below only indicate a possible outcome based
upon individual runner speed ratings ... they
are only one indication of team strength. I used the top seven
runners from each team as best as I was aware of ... one major problem
with projections is knowing who will or will not be running on some
teams (it can make a big difference) ...
Projected Scores were posted on
November 4, 2014
... Actual scores will be posted side-by-side after
the meet ...
ACTUAL SCORES ADDED November 8, 2014 NOTE ... I consider these Projections to be similar to "Seed Times" for a track & field meet. |

Boys Class A - Fayetteville-Manlius odds-on favorite |
Projected Actual School Sect Score School Score =============== ==== ===== ================== ===== 1 Fayetteville-Manlius (03) 29 Fayetteville-Manlius 24 2 Shenendehowa (02) 104 Shenendehowa 100 3 Corning (04) 108 Warwick Valley 114 4 Sachem North (11) 122 Sachem North 118 5 Syosset (08) 128 Corning 126 6 Warwick Valley (09) 135 Syosset 131 7 McQuaid (05) 157 Williamsville North 172 8 Williamsville North (06) 172 McQuaid 174 9 Arlington (01) 179 Arlington 183 |
Pre-Race Analysis ... Fayetteville-Manlius is the odds-on favorite in the Class A race ... At this point in time, Fayetteville-Manlius can be considered the #1 team in the nation, with American Fork (Utah) very close behind ... Fayetteville-Manlius handily beat Liverpool (the 2nd-best team in NY State) at sectionals in a race where Liverpool altered their previous race strategy and it proved unsuccessful (but FM was just simply excellent) ... I doubt FM will duplicate their sectional level-of-performance at States, but they don't need to. Shenendehowa and Corning look fairly even-up ... and the next 3 teams also look even-up. Several out-of-State coaches have asked about the qualifying procedure for this meet ... "Why only 9 teams in a State Championship race??" (Answer - 2 of the 11 sections have no Class A teams, so that leaves only 9) ... "Why just the winning team in each class??" (Answer - the NYSPHSAA Meet is technically an "Intersectional Championship" ... A number of years ago, I over-heard a reporter having an argument with several of the sectional coordinators about excluding top teams ... the sectional coordinators made it clear that it was an "Intersectional" meet ... one coordinator pointed to another coordinator and said "It's my best against his best" in a gladiator tone of voice ........ Let's see, each district (I mean section) picks one boys team champion and one girls team champion to slay the others (Hey, I just watched The Hunger Games). Individual Race ... This is an excellent quality individual race ... As noted in the list below, 14 guys with overall speed ratings between 198 and 186, and 6 guys at 190 or higher ... Bryce Millar (FM) and Mike Brannigan (Northport) should probably be considered co-favorites for the individual title ... Mike Brannigan just popped a 198 speed rating at the Section 11 Championships after beginning competition in mid-season ... Mike Brannigan could go out very fast at the start of the race (as he did in two earlier season races), but I expect he may follow Bryce Millar closely through much of the race and try to out-kick Bryce Millar near the end ... Other good runners in this race could benefit from the Millar-Brannigan duel up front ... Any runner who has shown a 190 speed rating capability has the potential to step-up and pop a huge performance (it happens quite a bit at Footlocker) ... Should be very interesting to see how this race plays out in terms of tactics and results. |

Boys Class B - Pittsford Mendon favored again |

Pre-Race Analysis ... Pittsford Mendon is the defending State Class B champion and the favorite to win again ... Pittsford Mendon was the top team by nearly 50 points in the Section 5 merge. Looks like a toss-up between Bayport-Blue Point and Tappan Zee for the runner-up spot ... Cornwall, Sweet Home and Burnt Hills look evenly match as well. Individual Race ... Noah Affolder (Carthage) is undefeated since moving to NY State from Illinois ... Last year as a freshmen, Noah Affolder finished 9th at the Illinois State Class 2A Championship (176 speed rating) ... Noah defeated Dan Schaeffer (Maine-Endwell) at the Marathon Invitational, but not much separates the two runners overall ... Luke Gavigan (Tappan Zee) is also undefeated this season (he finished 4th at last year's State Meet) and Luke has an excellent track resume (e.g. NY State 1600 meter champion beating Mike Brannigan in 4:07.82) ... This could be a really good race. |

Boys Class C - East Aurora the favorite |

Pre-Race Analysis ... East Aurora dropped to Class C in 2014 ... East Aurora has been improving all season and enter this race off a very good performance at sectionals which makes them the favorite. Mount Academy beat Greenwich in last year's Class D race at States - Both teams moved up to Class C this year ... Mount Academy has a very deep team which could help them because they are not that far behind East Aurora. Pleasantville is within striking distance with a real good performance ... East Aurora is the favorite, but they need to run a good race with the competition close behind. Individual Race ... The Class C individual race features a real good match-up between Jeremy Spiezo (Greenwich) and Kenny Vasbinder (East Aurora) ... Both runners are undefeated this year ... Jeremy Spiezo ran the 4th fastest time ever at Saratoga Park in winning the Wasaren League Meet and Jeremy Spiezo won the Class D race at last year's State Meet ... But Kenny Vasbinder has run some excellent races and appears capable of seriously challenging for the individual title ... A bunch of guys could challenge for the 3rd spot. |

Pre-Race Analysis ... The top two teams at last year's Class D race (Mount Academy and Greenwich) both moved up to Class C ... Barker was 3rd and East Rochester was 5th at last year's Class D race. Beaver River has been racing decently all season and enter States off a good race at sectionals which makes Beaver River the favorite ... Barker and East Rochester are within striking distance ... A bit more "uncertainty" in this race (compared to others) could project a very close finish. Individual Race ... Appears to be a competitive race for the Class D individual title ... Pat Murphy (Duanesburg) beat Daryn Hutchings (Argyle) at the Section 2 sectionals, but not much separates the two runners ... Everett Geiger (Caledonia Mumford) is virtually even-up with the top two and Dawson Bathgate (East Rochester) is close behind ... very competitive. |

Girls Class A - FM odds-on favorite with Saratoga second again |
Projected Actual School Sect Score School Score =============== ==== ===== ================== ===== 1 Fayetteville-Manlius (03) 36 Fayetteville-Manlius 20 2 Saratoga (02) 76 Saratoga Springs 85 3 Corning (04) 94 Suffern 95 4 Suffern (01) 101 Corning 115 5 Monroe-Woodbury (09) 119 Monroe-Woodbury 129 6 Sachem East (11) 143 Sachem East 141 7 Webster Thomas (05) 182 Syosset 170 8 Syosset (08) 196 Webster Thomas 189 9 Williamsville North (06) 216 Williamsville North 236 |
Pre-Race Analysis ... Fayetteville-Manlius is one of the top team in the nation (again) and the odds-on favorite to win this race ... Fayetteville-Manlius did not have their best team race at sectionals ... Top runner Annika Avery was sick and finished as the #5 scorer. Saratoga is a young team - 4 freshmen and an 8th-grader in their top 7 at sectionals ... Like last year, Saratoga has had both good and "off" team performances this season, but they are capable of performing very well. Corning has come on strong this season in Class A (they were Class B last year) ... they are lead by Jessica Lawson, and starting the team score with a "1" is a nice advantage ... Suffern has a good team. Individual Race ... The best girl's race of the day in terms of quality ... Jessica Lawson (Corning) and Bella Burda (Arlington) are two nationally ranked runners ... Bella Burda beat Jessica Lawson at the Pre-State meet back in September ... The following week, Jessica Lawson set the course record at McQuaid and Jessica Lawson then ran the fastest time of the day at the Manhattan Invitational ... Bella Burda popped a huge sub-18:00 performance at sectionals at Bowdoin Park. Freshman Carly Benson (West Genesee) could make this an interesting race at the top end ... Carly Benson has been improving all season ... she finished 3rd in the champion race at Manhattan and looked very good in winning over the tough VVS course at sectionals ... she has good speed (e.g. an open 800m in 2:14) and could be a real factor if close approaching the finish. Twenty-two girls in this race have an overall speed rating of 130 or higher ... Excellent Quality. |

Pre-Race Analysis ... Cornwall popped a very nice performance at sectionals, and that makes Cornwall the favorite ... Burnt Hills had a good, deep performance at sectionals (Section 2 allows 10 runners at sectionals) ... If Cornwall falters at the scoring positions, Burnt Hills could take advantage and grab the team title. Very little separates Shoreham Wading River, North Shore and Pearl River ... Actually, this race has significant "variability", and these three teams are within striking distance should the top two falter. Individual Race ... This could be the most competitive race of the day at top end ... Five girls with overall speed ratings between 131 and 134, and a bunch of others close behind ... Katherine Lee (Shoreham) has been racing well all season and won a division of the Brown Invitational in Rhode Island ... Stephanie Gerland (Garden City) typically races well at big meets. |

Pre-Race Analysis ... Bronxville is the many-time defending Class C champion ... East Aurora finished a very close 3rd at States last year in Class B, and that was without Sophia Tasselmyer. I was expecting East Aurora to be a bigger favorite than the score above shows, but scores are determined by the competition in the race ... In a number of race simulations, Bronxville was getting some match-up advantages ... Bronxville and East Aurora typically race well at States, and this race looks like it is up for grabs. Greenwich and Westhill-Ludden look fairly evenly matched ... Greenwich gets the advantage due to a better performance at sectionals. Individual Race ... Sophia Tasselmyer (East Aurora) finished 2nd at States last year in Class B (she was beaten by Jessica Lawson) ... Sophia Tasselmyer has come on nicely in recent races which makes her the favorite ... Kaitlyn Neal (Skaneateles) was 2nd at States last year and runs well on any type of course ... Emily Acker (Albany Academy) made a big improvement this XC season (will be interesting to see how she races at States). |

Girls Class D - Tully a slight favorite over Seton Catholic |

Pre-Race Analysis ... Tully is the defending Class D champion ... Tully had their best race of the season at States last year ... They enter this race off a good performance at sectionals (despite an off-performance by one scorer due to sickness). Seton Catholic-Plattsburgh raced well at sectionals to close a gap with Tully ... Norwood-Norfolk is not far behind. The teams in this race are not deep ... It could make a big difference in the team score should a normal scorer falter for any team. Individual Race ... Sage Hurta (Hamilton) has been racing well and enters the Class D race as the individual favorite ...
