Pre-Season ... National GIRLS Individual Rankings - Cross Country 2012

I decided to profile the top 10 runners similar to the profiles I do for the NY girls because it presents a decent comparison for the NY runners (three NY girls are included, so that saved me some time since their profiles were already done) ... After the top 10, I included XC ratings from my database so comparisons can be viewed.

In general, the rankings follow the finishing places from the Footlocker Finals and NXN Nationals after I did some combining ... I manipulated a few runners up or down and added some other runners as described in their profile ... For example, I moved Mary Cain up a few spots and placed her 4th overall behind Jillian Fanning ... Mary Cain and Jillian Fanning raced head-to-head twice last XC season, and Fanning won both times (NXN Nationals and NXN regional); in addition, Fanning and Cain ran in the same meet not head-to-head twice and Fanning was faster in both (Manhattan Invite and NY States).

I ranked three runners fairly high who did not compete at Footlocker Finals or NXN Nationals in 2011 (Wesley Frazier, Hannah Meier and Ashley Erba) ... all three have shown good XC ability as well as exceptional 2012 track ability ... I did a full profile on Wesley Frazier because she was a Footlocker finalist in both 2010 and 2009.

One Question ... Will Sarah Baxter and Erin Finn race head-to-head during XC 2012?? ... Simi Valley could return to NXN in 2012 which would place Sarah Baxter at Portland Meadows ... Since Erin Finn is from the mid-west, she could qualify for both NXN and Footlocker, but her running style (all-out on the front-end) is not really conducive for back-to-back weekends that include traveling ... So the top two may not race each other again at season's end (e.g. Molly Seidel & Sarah Baxter in 2011).

Remember - These are my own rankings ... I make them available so viewers can see who the top individuals might be and what they have done ... and I do not take the exact order of the list too seriously (and neither should anybody else) ... Once the season begins, this list is not used in any way to rank individual runners.

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2012 XC season. The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster). Selected track data is also shown .

Sarah Baxter won NXN Nationals at Portland Meadows with an excellent performance (very impressive for a sophomore ... nice to know a California girl can "like" cold and mud

) ... Sarah was the top California State Meet runner in both 2010 and 2011 ... I don't believe she has ever lost a high school XC race ....... The race at NXN proved to me she is both remarkably competitive and talented to a level that merits a #1 national ranking.

#2 - Erin Finn 12 West Bloomfield HS Michigan (Lower Peninsula)

Erin Finn led Footlocker Finals for nearly the entire race before being passed by Molly Seidel in the final stretch run - it was a sensational all-out performance by Erin Finn ... Erin was 7th at Footlocker Finals in 2010 which gave her experience for her super effort in 2011 ... About a month after Footlocker, Erin finished 7th at the Great Edinburgh 4K XC race in Scotland (her US team-mates included Aisling Cuffe, Molly Seidel and Katie Knight).

Erin shattered the US National Indoor HS Record at 5000 Meters with a sensational time of 16:19.69 at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at the Armory in NYC (I approximated the speed rating for this race as 159) ... Could easily be ranked #1 in the nation entering XC 2012 (and I almost did).

#3 - Jillian Fanning 12 Fayetteville-Manlius HS New York (Section 3)

Jillian Fanning was undefeated in XC 2011 entering NXN Nationals ... she won the Manhattan Championship race and NY States (Class A) ... her winning time at the NXN-NY regional (17:47) placed her 5th on the all-time Bowdoin Park record list ... she finished an excellent 4th at NXN Nationals ... Jillian won the NY XC Runner-of-the-Year award ... Jillian is easily one of the best XC runners in the nation, and enters 2012 as the top-rated runner in NY.

#4 - Mary Cain 11 Bronxville HS New York (Section 1)

Mary Cain is clearly one of the top high school runners in the nation ... Mary won the NY Federation XC race with the 3rd fastest time in Bowdoin history (behind Aisling Cuffe and Nicole Blood) and she was 6th at NXN Nationals ... Mary's track performances are spectacular ... Mary set the National 1500m record (4:11.01) at World Junior Champs in Barcelona Spain ... in addition to the 1500m, she set NY State outdoor records in the 800m (2:03.34) and Mile (4:39.28), and had the fastest NY time this year in 3000m (9:32.2) ... Mary enters the 2012 XC season as one of the favorites to win national honors.

#7 - Laura Leff 11 West Genesee HS New York (Section 3)

Laura Leff stamped herself as one of the top XC runners in the nation by finishing an outstanding 3rd at Footlocker Nationals ... Laura was 2nd at both NY States and Federation, and the only runners who beat her (Mary Cain and Jillian Fanning), are ranked above.

Unfortunately, Laura had a nasty stress fracture in her foot that ended her indoor track season (as well as her outdoor track season) ... Laura won the New Balance Indoor Games mile in excellent time (4:48.96) before the injury appeared ... Expect Laura to ease into XC this year with her best performances saved for the championship season.

#8 - Karlie Garcia 12 Oakmont HS California (Sac-Joaquin Section)

As a freshman in 2009, Karlie Garcia finished an excellent 12th at Footlocker Finals ... Unfortunately, a severe intestinal infection requiring extended hospital time followed by a stress fracture prevented Karlie from competing XC in 2010 ... Her win at the Del Oro XC Invite on Sept 1, 2011 was her first XC race since Footlocker 2009 ..... Karlie's competitiveness, talent and remarkably powerful 4-ft 10-inch frame (and long bounding strides) make her one of the best XC runners in the nation ... Her 5th-place finish at Footlocker Finals 2011 makes her the #3 returning Footlocker underclassmen (behind Erin Finn and Laura Leff).

#9 - Grace Tinkey 12 First Presbyterian Day School Georgia

Grace Tinkey is a 3-time Footlocker Finalist ... she was 20th in 2009 (as a freshman), 15th in 2010 and 6th in 2011, so she is improving with age

...... Unfortunately, Grace broke a bone in her leg (fibula at the ankle bone) competing at the USA Junior Cross Country Championships in St Louis on Feb 11, 2012, and missed the track seasons ... I expect she will join the "exclusive club" as a 4-time Footlocker finalist.

#10 - Wesley Frazier 12 Ravenscroft School-Unattached North Carolina

Wesley Frazier was a Footlocker Finalist in both 2009 and 2010 ... I don't believe she was a 100% at Footlocker South last year ... Wesley showed excellent fitness at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Track by finishing 1st in the 2-Mile (10:13.43), 2nd in the Mile (4:48.28) and 3rd in the 5000 meters (16:51.04) ....... Her excellent XC performances as a freshman were not duplicated as a sophomore or junior, but I'm thinking she may have a really good senior XC season.
