November 2, 2011 ... Boys & Girls pre-race Projections for the 2011 Section 3 Championships
Please remember: the predicted scores below only indicate a possible outcome based upon individual runner speed ratings ... I used the top seven runners from each team as best as I was aware of ... one major problem with projections is knowing who will or will not be running on some teams (it can make a big difference) ... Predicted Scores were posted on November 2, 2011 ... Actual Scores added Nov 6, 2011

Pre-Race Analysis ... Fayetteville-Manlius is currently the top-ranked team in NY State (all classes) and a solid favorite to win the Class A race with a very low score ... Baldwinsville and CNS seem basically even-up as the 2nd and 3rd teams (Baldwinsville beat CNS by 8 points at the CNYCL National League meet) ... Liverpool is not far behind and could contend for a 2nd or 3rd-place finish. Individual Race ...
Nick Ryan (FM) is the top-rated runner in Section 3 and
NY State, and therefore, the favorite ... Senior Matt Deyo
(FM) tried cross country as a freshman but decide to stick to
academics as a sophomore and junior, and now returns to XC as a
senior; he has helped FM become one of the top ten teams
in the nation and may have sometimes to say about the winner of
this race ... Alec Peinkofer (Baldwinsville) is a
definite favorite to qualify as a one of the five individuals
for States ... a number of guys are in the running for the other
four individual spots; they include Anthony Lupia (CNS),
Martin Leff (West Gen), and Justin Middleton
(Auburn). |
Boys Class B - Marcellus a solid favorite |
Predicted Actual School Score School Score ================== ===== ================== ===== 1 Marcellus 32 Marcellus 32 2 ESM 76 ESM 78 3 Westhill-Ludden 120 New Hartford 115 4 New Hartford 137 Jamesville-Dewitt 139 5 Jamesville-Dewitt 147 Fulton 155 6 Whitesboro 179 Westhill-Ludden 167 7 Mexico 200 Mexico 176 8 Fulton 202 Whitesboro 189 9 VVS 252 VVS 256 10 Homer 256 Homer 260 11 Chittenango 313 Cortland 299 12 Oneida 342 Chittenango 304 13 Phoenix 362 Oneida 359 14 Carthage 373 Phoenix 366 15 Cortland 383 Camden 453 16 Camden 440 |
Pre-Race Analysis ... Marcellus is the solid favorite to win Class B; they recently won the OHSL Liberty League meet ... East Syracuse-Minoa was an easy winner at the OHSL Freedom League meet. Individual Race ... Ryan Manahan (Marcellus) is the solid favorite to win the race, and team-mate Joe Fallon should grab one of the top spots as well ... Mike Coogan (ESM) and James Gowans (Mexico) are favorites to grab individual qualifying spots for States.

Boys Class C - Three Teams Could Win |
Predicted Actual School Score School Score ================== ===== ================== ===== 1 Hannibal 76 Holland Patent 74 2 Holland Patent 83 Hannibal 91 3 Tully 92 Tully 118 4 Sauquoit Valley 118 Sauquoit Valley 129 5 Jordan-Elbridge 138 Jordan-Elbridge 162 6 Ilion 151 Ilion 171 7 Solvay 151 Solvay 176 8 South Jefferson 199 South Jefferson 199 9 South Lewis 230 South Lewis 218 10 CBA 280 CBA 270 11 Adirondack 296 Clinton 303 12 Skaneateles 330 Little Falls 315 13 Clinton 338 Adirondack 374 14 Little Falls 356 Skaneateles 379 15 APW 428 Cazenovia 405 16 Cazenovia 449 APW 426 17 Pulaski 494 Canastota 511 18 Canastota 560 Sherburne-Earl 531 19 Sherburne-Earl 577 20 Mount Markham 578 |
Pre-Race Analysis ... The Class C race appears to be a good three-team match-up between Hannibal, Holland Patent and Tully ... Hannibal has shown nice team improvement throughout the season and enters the sectional race off a good second-place finish at the OHSL Liberty meet (they were only 19 points behind Class B favorite Marcellus) ... Hannibal is the morning-line favorite based on their improvement and some questions about the other teams. Holland Patent won the TVL League meet and won their division at the Adirondack Invitational last week ... However, one of the top runners (Erran Gates) did not run at the league meet or Adirondack Invite (he did run at the Chittenango Invite on Oct 15), and the projected Class C score above does include him ... Without him, the projected score drops somewhat and makes Hannibal even more of a favorite ... It's impressive that Holland Patent won their division at the Adirondack Invite (and finished second in the merge beating Tully). Tully won the OHSL Patriot League meet without one of their top runners (Evan Knapp who also missed the Central Square Invite ... he returned at the Adirondack Invite but took a nasty spill and finished as the 6th team scorer) ... Assuming all the Tully guys are healthy this week and perform well, Tully has a chance to win ... Sauquoit Valley tied Tully in the team score at the Adirondack Invite, and is not that far behind (they are also the CSC League champion). Individual Race ... Brendan Smith (CBA) and Sam Anderson (South Lewis) could have a good race for the individual title ... a bunch of guys are in contention for the individual State qualifying spots (and it also depends on who wins the team title).

Boys Class D - Beaver River favored again |
Predicted Actual School Score School Score ================== ===== ================== ===== 1 Beaver River 40 Beaver River 38 2 LaFayette 82 LaFayette 105 3 Onondaga 82 Cooperstown 107 4 Weedsport 111 Weedsport 113 5 Cooperstown 136 Onondaga 120 6 Fabius-Pompey 151 Fabius-Pompey 169 7 Oriskany 229 Oriskany 203 8 Cato Meridian 263 Utica Notre Dame 237 9 Port Byron 267 Cato-Meridian 243 10 Utica Notre Dame 275 Port Byron 264 11 Sandy Creek 328 New York Mills 315 12 Faith Heritage 331 Faith Heritage 319 13 New York Mills 342 Sandy Creek 324 14 Poland 381 Poland 326 15 Old Forge 433 16 West Canada 438 |
Pre-Race Analysis ... Beaver River enters the Class "D" race as the favorite once again (they are the #3 ranked Class D team in the State) ... Like last year, Beaver River is the Frontier League champion and they just won their division (and the merge) at the Adirondack Invitational. LaFayette and Onondaga seem evenly-matched for second-place ... LaFayette edged Onondaga by 3 points at the OHSL Patriot League meet. Individual Race ... Logan Kempney (Beaver River) is the top-rated Section 3-Class D runner and the solid favorite to win the individual title ... Seth Baker (Weedsport), Thomas Sargent (LaFayette), Brett Ryan (Cato Meridian) and Thomas Moade (DeRuyter) are top contenders for the five individual State qualifying spots.

Girls Class A - Fayetteville-Manlius the odds-on favorite |
Predicted Actual School Score School Score ================== ===== ================== ===== 1 FM 19 FM 19 2 CNS 72 CNS 69 3 Liverpool 89 West Genesee 81 4 West Genesee 97 Liverpool 103 5 Baldwinsville 114 Baldwinsville 114 6 Central Square 191 Central Square 193 7 Rome 209 Rome 195 8 Auburn 234 Oswego 262 9 Oswego 280 Auburn 266 10 Syracuse West 295 Proctor 329 11 Syracuse East 327 Syracuse West 329 12 Proctor 341 Syracuse East 331 |
Pre-Race Analysis ... The Fayetteville-Manlius girls are the defending National Champions and the #1 ranked team in the nation once again ... FM scored a perfect 15 in three of the last four years at sectionals (but not last year) ... Laura Leff (West Genesee) is certainly capable of breaking up the top five FM runners ... CNS beat Liverpool at the CNYCL National League meet and gets the nod for 2nd-place. Individual Race ... FM has a team full of contenders for the win ... Jillian Fanning is the clear favorite based on impressive wins at the Manhattan (Eastern States Champ) and VVS Invitational races ... Laura Leff (West Genesee) is a serious challenger, but I'm guessing her prime goal is to qualify for States.

Girls Class B - Westhill-Ludden & Marcellus in a close call |
Predicted Actual School Score School Score ================== ===== ================== ===== 1 Westhill-Ludden 44 Westhill-Ludden 38 2 Marcellus 50 (or 80?) Marcellus 52 3 New Hartford 98 ESM 100 4 ESM 105 New Hartford 108 5 Jamesville Dewitt 115 Jamesville-Dewitt 121 6 Chittenango 160 Whitesboro 148 7 Whitesboro 162 Chittenango 185 8 Mexico 239 Mexico 187 9 VVS 290 Fulton 263 10 Oneida 305 Oneida 277 11 Phoenix 341 12 Carthage 348 13 Fulton 355 14 Camden 362 15 Cortland 437 |
Pre-Race Analysis ... Westhill-Ludden handily defeated Marcellus at the OHSL Liberty League meet (45 to 79); However, one of the top Marcellus runners (Maggie Dunn) did not run (she also did not run at the preceding Marathon Invite race), and this makes me wonder about the sectional race. IF she does run (and runs decently), the score becomes fairly close (as noted above), but in her absence, the Marcellus team score goes up by roughly 30 points (as also noted in the score above). Individual Race ... Jessica Curry (Westhill-Ludden) is the top-ranked Section 3 Class A runner and the favorite to win the individual title ... Rachel Garn (Marcellus) and Betsy Black (Westhill-Ludden) look very competitive for the second-spot.

Girls Class C - Tully is the favorite |
Predicted Actual School Score School Score ================== ===== ================== ===== 1 Tully 66 Tully 75 2 Cazenovia 94 Cazenovia 93 3 Skaneateles 102 South Lewis 101 4 South Lewis 117 Skaneateles 138 5 Holland Patent 129 Holland Patent 158 6 CBA 154 Adirondack 181 7 South Jefferson 166 South Jefferson 190 8 Adirondack 222 Sauquoit Valley 202 9 Sauquoit Valley 236 CBA 237 10 Ilion 286 Ilion 281 11 Jordan-Elbridge 307 Canastota 281 12 Canastota 317 Hannibal 304 13 Hannibal 326 Jordan-Elbridge 309 14 APW 358 APW 310 15 Pulaski 374 Pulaski 393 16 Clinton 474 17 Solvay 478 18 Herkimer 553 |
Pre-Race Analysis ... Tully is currently ranked #3 in NY State (Class C) ... Tully has won the Section 3 Class C title the last four years, and is the favorite again this year (based on team depth). Cazenovia, Skaneateles, South Lewis and Holland Patent all look competitive for the second-spot despite the scoring range shown above. Individual Race ... Victoria Campanian (South Lewis) is the solid favorite to win the Class C individual title; she is the Frontier League champion and was the fastest girl at the Adirondack Invitational (by nearly 33 seconds) ... Looks like a real good scramble for the five individual State qualifying spots amongst a bunch of girls.

Girls Class D - Beaver River favored over Remsen |
Predicted Actual School Score School Score ================== ===== ================== ===== 1 Beaver River 42 Beaver River 33 2 Remsen 55 Remsen 51 3 Fabius-Pompey 97 Cooperstown 116 4 LaFayette 124 Fabius-Pompey 135 5 Port Byron 160 Utica Notre Dame 170 6 Cooperstown 169 LaFayette 171 7 Utica Notre Dame 198 Port Byron 190 8 Weedsport 233 Waterville 224 9 Faith Heritage 246 Weedsport 235 10 Waterville 250 Faith Heritage 236 11 Sandy Creek 255 Poland 243 12 Poland 286 Sandy Creek 271 13 Old Forge 313 West Canada 368 14 West Canada 392 |
Pre-Race Analysis ... Beaver River is favored over Remsen ... Beaver River is the Frontier League champion and Remsen is the CSC League champion. Last year, Remsen raced extremely well at sectionals and won Class D impressively, and then won the Section 3 Class soccer title later in the day (some of their runners do both sports) ... and it could happen again this year. Individual Race ... Erin McConnell (Fabius-Pompey) has been running very well recently and is the favorite to win the individual title (she finished 3rd at States last year) ... Sage Hurta (Hamilton) was last year's State Class D champion ... Elizabeth Dean (Manlius-Pebble Hill) was at Marcellus prior to this year.
