Overall Contenders & Class Contenders Pre-season team rankings have problems: ... first, they are based (in large part) on last year's results ... more recent track results may or may not have relevance for the upcoming XC season ... some runners improve (some improve a lot) ... a few runners transfer or quit ... new runners can join a team and make a big difference ... So any pre-season rankings must be viewed in that context. What good are pre-season rankings? Once the XC season starts, I rank individual runners and teams based strictly on performance during the current season ... So pre-season rankings are not used during the season. For the most part, the team listing below is just an extension of the 2010 XC season into 2011 with a few modifications ... IF data for 5 runners on each team was not readily available (or guess-able), that team is probably NOT included below ... With rare exceptions, I ignored last year's modified runners. Initially, the Combined Class List included 70+ teams, but I began removing teams with lower scores to make computer race simulations more manageable ... Other teams could be included, but time constraints are necessary ... Data on selected teams by class is also posted including relevant track times at 3000m, 1500m, 1-Mile and Steeplechase. Remember ... this list is just an informational starting point ... I posted scores by individual class (because some people are interested) ... A lot can change between early August and November. NOTE ... All team classes assume the proposed class cut-off numbers will be adopted ... New York is going from five classes in 2010 to four classes in 2011...

Where did the scores come from? ... In part, the scores are a composite of computer race simulations using 2010 seasonal speed ratings ... a few speed rating ranges were altered based on track results ... I manually manipulated some numbers (because I wanted to). Note ... The scores are simply my pre-season "guess" of relative team abilities in a combined race ... I included 38 teams in one of the composite team scores above because I wanted to include Tully. In General ... Fayetteville-Manlius is the odds-on favorite entering the 2011 XC season ... FM is the five-time defending National champion and appears to be strong again this season ... Fayetteville-Manlius will (almost certainly) be the #1 ranked team in the nation entering XC 2011 ... FM is not only the odds-on favorite in NY, they are the odds-on favorite nationally. Saratoga figures to be a very strong again and, most likely, the #2 ranked team nationally due to their remarkable depth. North Shore is another NY powerhouse ... North Shore will likely be ranked in the top five nationally entering the season (and they should be) ... Their top two runners (Samantha Nadel and Brianna Nerud) could match-up well with anybody nationally (including FM) ... North Shore is is very strong at the #3 and #4 positions ... a modest improvement at the #5 position puts North Shore in contention for a podium-position at NXN Nationals and as a potential winner at NY Federations (assuming FM skips the Federation race again). Additional information is given below by class.

Fayetteville-Manlius is, once
again, the defending State and National Champion
...
Fayetteville-Manlius returns their top four runners from last year's State
& NXN teams (Christie Rutledge, Jillian Fanning, Katie
Sischo and Heather Martin) ... FM graduated Courtney
Chapman (unfortunately, Courtney was not 100% during the XC season due a
virus). Fayetteville-Manlius returns some other very good runners (Katie Brislin, Maggie Malone, Emily McGurrin, Leah Mansour and Alana Pearl) ... FM has been very good in recent years at adding "new blood" to maintain or improve overall team performance for an upcoming season, and this year may be no exception (if rumors come true). Saratoga has very deep team at a very high level (there's a reason they do so well nationally) ... Incoming freshman Estela Smith seems to be improving nicely based on track performances and recent road race results ... I'm not certain of the status of some Saratoga runners for the upcoming season, but their team depth is a wonderful asset ... Saratoga did graduate some very good runners (Amanda Borroughs, Sydney King, Molly Pezzulo). Canandaigua was in the old Class A last year, while FM, Saratoga, and others were in Class AA (which no longer exists this coming season) ... Canandaigua finished 2nd to North Shore at States ... Canandaigua returns their entire team from States. The next few teams in the list above (Guilderland, North Rockland, Northport, Cicero-North Syracuse, and maybe some others) all seem relatively even when all factors are considered ... One new or improved runner (or one "scoring" runner who is missing) could change the balance quickly ... Real 2011 XC race results are need.

East Aurora's long streak of
Class B titles is in jeopardy ... With NY changing from five classes to
four classes, North Shore and Burnt Hills drop from the
old Class A to the new Class B ... North Shore won the Class A
title last year and then beat East Aurora at Feds. North Shore returns their top four runners from States, Feds and NXN, and they are an excellent top four ... Samantha Nadel and Brianna Nerud are two of the top runners in NY State (and that means they are elite runners nationally) ... Jessica Donohue and Elizabeth Caldwell add excellent strength at the #3 and #4 positions ... Coach Neal Levy says the #5-position is a work-in-progress (as it was last year when then finished 9th and NXN Nationals) - just modest improvements (which seem likely) could raise North Shore to a top five team nationally (or better). North Shore may run fewer invitational races this season with an eye towards season's-end ... at the the end of the season on consecutive weekends, North Shore will race conference championships, Section 8 State Qualifier, NY States Champ, NY Federation Champ, NXN-NY Regional and (hopefully) NXN Nationals ... Coach Levy expects to race at Feds. Burnt Hills has very nice depth ... scoring decently at the #5-position will be very beneficial ... Burnt Hills also has an elite runner in Dani Martino, and scoring a low number at the #1-position is always beneficial ... Burnt Hills returns their top five finishers from States. East Aurora losses three of their top seven runners from States and Feds, but returns a good core of runners (and they have a deep team) ... Elite runner Marta McLaughlin will start their scoring with a low number ... It will be interesting to see how East Aurora responds to this year's challenge, and I expect they will respond very well. |

Last year at States, Bronxville beat Greenwich (by 3 points) followed Tully and Wayland Cohocton (and those are the top four in this year's pre-season picks) ... Greenwich graduated their top runner and Bronxville appears to be even better than last year, so Bronxville is a solid favorite to defend their Class C title. Bronxville has some very talented runners ... Mary Cain established herself as a top national runner (her 4:17 1500-meter record and 9:28 3000-meter time are exceptional for a freshman) ... Meredith Rizzo is looking stronger than ever, and that gives Bronxville two "top-runners" (and that's the first characteristic of a team capable of finishing in the top four-or-five at NXN Nationals) ... the improved track results of other runners, along with some "new blood", suggests Bronxville is a team to watch nationally. |
