NYSPHSAA State Meet 2010 - Projections & Preview |
Please remember:
the projected scores below only indicate a possible outcome based
upon individual runner speed ratings ... they
are only one indication of team strength. I used the top seven
runners from each team as best as I was aware of ... one major problem
with projections is knowing who will or will not be running on some
teams (it can make a big difference) ...
Projected Scores were posted on
November 9, 2010
... Actual scores will be posted side-by-side after
the meet.
NOTE ... I consider these Projections to be similar to "Seed Times" for a track & field meet. |
ACTUAL Scores added on Nov 14, 2010 ...

Pre-Race Analysis ...
Repeating some of last year's pre-race analysis ... Two major factors
are
significant in determining the outcome of many championship races ... one factor will be determined
by the teams themselves, but the other is out of their control: The speed ratings and computer simulations make Shaker the clear favorite ... Shaker's prime advantage is depth through all seven runners, and that is very important when considering placement of the #4 and #5 runners ... Also, first year runner Christian Delago is emerging as one of the top runners in the State ... Shaker beat FM, Warwick Valley and Rush-Henrietta at the Manhattan Invitational ... Shaker has raced on the Pawling Lakeside course (Green Mountain Invite, and raced decently) while the other three contending teams have not raced there (sometimes that's an advantage, sometimes not) ... All things considered, Shaker is the favorite. Fayetteville-Manlius ran only two invitational races (Chittenango and Manhattan) followed by a three-week break, then OHSL Championships and sectionals ... I believe FM basically "trained-through" the OHSL race and then ran sectionals to see where the stood overall ... Both races (at Jamesville Beach and VVS) were run on courses having significant muddy sections, and the courses could be considered "tiring" and challenging ... The Pawling Lakeside course is quite different (in addition, the weather is expected to be good, so I assume the course will be in decent condition) ... As I said last year - Borrowing from horse-race handicapping, the sectional race may have been a good "tightener" for FM (this intangible handicapping factor might give an advantage to FM and could be considered if pari-mutuel wagering was allowed) ... FM matches Shaker at the top-end ... Big races by the #4 and #5 runners give FM a real shot at winning this race. Warwick Valley is very good team and a contender ... Warwick was beaten by both Shaker and FM at Manhattan ... One of their top runners (Ian Sullivan) was not in the results from sectionals (don't know why, but I included him in the projections). Rush-Henrietta ran a bit better earlier in the season and will need to improve on recent performances to contend for the win. Individual Race ... This could be a really good race ... Alex Saavedra (Sachem East) has popped some outstanding performances at Sunken Meadow (some observers believe I have under-rated those efforts) ... Martin Hehir (Washingtonville) is undefeated this season in invitational and championship races (including wins at Manhattan (Varsity C race), Grout, Carlisle PA, and the Section One Coaches race at Pawling) ... Shaun Thompson (Baldwinsville) is coming-on very strong after missing the early season due to a broken foot (won OHSL and sectionals with something reserve); Shaun Thompson a serious challenger for the win ... Section Two's Sam Place (Saratoga) and improving first-year runner Christian Delago (Shaker) are definitely in the mix along with Section Three's Mark McGurrin (FM) and Chris Buchanan (CNS). Top Ranked Class AA Runners entering the race: 1 Alex Saavedra 12 11-AA Sachem East 192 2 Martin Hehir 12 09-AA Washingtonville 190 3 Sam Place 12 02-AA Saratoga 189 4 Shaun Thompson 12 03-AA Baldwinsville 189 5 Mark McGurrin 12 03-AA FM 186 6 Chris Buchanan 12 03-AA CNS 186 7 Joe DiRienzo 11 11-AA Sachem East 186 8 Christian Delago 11 02-AA Shaker 185 9 Tim Luthin 12 09-AA Warwick 185 10 Nick Ryan 10 03-AA FM 183 11 James Naglieri 12 01-AA North Rockland 183 12 Michael Libruk 11 02-AA Shaker 183 13 Matt Johnson 12 04-AA Ithaca 183 14 Andrew Roache 12 03-AA FM 182 15 Mickey Burke 9 05-AA Rush-Henrietta 182 |
Boys Class A - Burnt Hills favored again |

Pre-Race Analysis ... Burnt Hills is the favorite in Class A, but McQuaid is not that far behind ... Burnt Hills gets the advantage with top runner Otis Ubriaco and depth at the #4 through #7 positions. Individual Race ... Otis Ubriaco (Burnt Hills) is the solid favorite ... As noted below, a number of runners could contend for the runner-up spot ... Owen Skeete (Westbury), known for his front-running tactics in track, ran a very good race at Section 8 Championships. Top Ranked Class A Runners entering the race: 1 Otis Ubriaco 12 02-A Burnt Hills 189 2 Daniel Siegel 12 08-A Great Neck S 182 3 Owen Skeete 12 08-A Westbury 182 4 Cal Michaels 12 04-A Vestal 182 5 Robert Hurlbut 12 05-A McQuaid 181 6 Lou Lipani 12 05-A Greece Arcadia 180 7 Scott Smolensky 12 05-A Brighton 178 8 Wyatt Gouldthorpe 12 05-A McQuaid 178 9 Justin Maguire 11 01-A Brewster 178 10 Victor Palumbo 12 01-A Eastchester 176 11 Ben Kraines 12 02-A Scotia-Glenville 176 12 Charlie Carr 11 01-A Brewster 176 13 John Lee 11 11-A Shoreham-Wading R 175 14 Drew Zeccola 12 05-A Pittsford Mend 175 |

Pre-Race Analysis ... The computer simulations could not separate East Aurora and Bayport-Blue Point effectively, so that makes them pre-race co-favorites ... Maine-Endwell is a serious contender for the win because they have a tight "pack" of runners that could inserted themselves between the top five East Aurora and Bayport-Blue Point finishers and claim the title. Individual Race ... Close race amongst a number of runners as noted below: Top Ranked Class B Runners entering the race: 1 Ryan Manahan 10 03-B Marcellus 180 2 Connor Crowley 12 11-B Bayport-BluePt 178 3 Dan Lennon 11 07-B Peru 178 4 Jesse Garn 12 03-B Marcellus 177 5 Chad Maloy 12 06-B Springville 177 6 Nick Orlowski 12 06-B Alden 176 7 Colin Kerr 10 05-B Wayne 176 8 Brian Busby 12 09-B New Paltz 175 9 Aaron Tompkins 12 03-B New Hartford 173 10 Nick Marcantonio 12 02-B Glens Falls 173 11 John Duffy 12 08-B Island Trees 173 12 Yanko Panipinto 12 05-B Wayne 173

Projected Actual School Sect Score School Score =============== ==== ===== ================== ===== 1 Holland Patent (03) 66 Fonda-Fultonville 43 1 Fonda Fultonville (02) 66 Holland Patent 46 1 Pawling (01) 66 Pawling 71 4 Port Jefferson (11) 125 Fredonia 157 5 Fredonia (06) 129 Greece Odyssey 157 6 Newark Valley (04) 135 Port Jefferson 159 7 Greece Odyssey (05) 150 Newark Valley 164 8 Oyster Bay (08) 175 Oyster Bay 183 9 Rhinebeck (09) 235 Rhinebeck 218 10 Saranac Lake (07) 270 Saranac Lake 264 11 Gouverneur (10) 315 Gouverneur 319 |
Pre-Race Analysis ... Three pre-race co-favorites (Holland Patent, Fonda-Fultonville and Pawling) ... Holland Patent is placed on top above because they are the defending Class C champions (and they are from Section Three). Holland Patent's advantage are top runners Dylan and Cody Racha (expected to go one-two in the team scoring); their fortunes will be determined by the performances of the #3 through #5 finishers ... Fonda-Fultonville and Pawling will try to place as many finishers as possible between the top two Holland Patent guys and their other scorers ... The winner in a significant number of computer simulations is determined by placement of team runners not on Holland Patent, Fonda-Fultonville or Pawling) ... Pawling has the home field advantage. Individual Race ... The Holland Patent twins (Dylan and Cody Racha) along with Cameron Bruce (Lansing, who ran in Michigan last year), Cohen Miles-Rath (Wayland-Cohocton), Austin Lane (Greenwich) and Brendan Wortner (Dobbs Ferry) could have a very competitive race. Top Ranked Class C Runners entering the race: 1 Dylan Racha 12 03-C Holland Patent 182 2 Cody Racha 12 03-C Holland Patent 181 3 Cameron Bruce 11 04-C Lansing 181 4 Cohen Miles-Rath 12 05-C Wayland-Cohocton 177 5 Austin Lane 11 02-C Greenwich 176 6 Brendan Wortner 11 01-C Dobbs Ferry 176 |

Girls Class AA - FM looking very strong with Saratoga second again |
Projected Actual School Sect Score School Score =============== ==== ===== ================== ===== 1 Fayetteville-Manlius (03) 16 Fayetteville-Manlius 15 2 Saratoga (02) 40 Saratoga 45 3 Monroe-Woodbury (09) 125 North Rockland 114 4 North Rockland (01) 126 Northport 121 5 Northport (11) 135 Monroe-Woodbury 134 6 Penfield (05) 142 Penfield 166 7 Ithaca (04) 172 Ithaca 167 8 Clarence (06) 192 Massapequa 221 9 Massapequa (08) 228 Clarence 229 |
Pre-Race Analysis ... Fayetteville-Manlius is the defending State and National Champions and the top-ranked team in the US once again ... FM currently has six of the top 14 positions on the Girls NY State Class AA leaderboard (see below) ... Last year, FM scored a perfect 15 with an amazing race at Plattsburgh ... The potential to score 15 again exists, but I think at least one (or maybe two) of Saratoga girls will break-up the top five FM finishers ... No runners from other teams seem close enough to be a factor in this regard. Fayetteville-Manlius has posted some amazing speed ratings this season ... The most recent performances (at OHSL and sectional championships) were contested on courses with muddy sections and courses that are fairly challenging ... these factors help separate runners somewhat and, to a certain extent, elevate speed ratings at the top end (meaning the FM girls) ... Based on the current weather forecast, I expect the Pawling Lakeside course will be much drier and firmer; in addition, the course is quite different from Jamesville Beach and VVS high school (where next year's State Meet be will be run). Saratoga is currently ranked #2 in the nation ... Saratoga won the Great American Race of Champions (in North Carolina) and the Chili Pepper Festival (in Arkansas) ... They have a deep and talented team capable of popping better than expected performances. The next four teams (Monroe-Woodbury, North Rockland, Northport and Penfield) are quite evenly-matched and the order posted above could easily switch places. Individual Race ... Courtney Chapman (FM) won States the last two years; she got off to a slow start this season due to an illness, but has shown improvement in recent races ... Jillian Fanning finished second to Aisling Cuffe (the top runner in the nation) at Manhattan, while Katie Sischo was 4th at Manhattan (Sischo won the sectional race after sitting-out the OHSL race) ... Lizzie Predmore (Shenenedehowa) is an elite runner and Section 2-Class AA champion - it will be interesting to see where she and the FM girls finish in relation to each other ... Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga) may break-up the top five FM scorers. Top Ranked Class AA Runners entering the race: 1 Jillian Fanning 10 03-AA FM 154 2 Christie Rutledge 11 03-AA FM 153 3 Katie Sischo 11 03-AA FM 149 4 Lizzie Predmore 11 02-AA Shenendehowa 147 5 Maria Lamontagne 9 03-AA CNS 145 6 Laura Leff 9 03-AA West Genesee 144 7 Courtney Chapman 12 03-AA FM 144 8 Keelin Hollowood 10 02-AA Saratoga 143 9 Heather Martin 11 03-AA FM 141 10 Margaret MacDonald 11 02-AA Saratoga 137 11 Sydney King 12 02-AA Saratoga 136 12 Mary Kate Anselmini 12 11-AA Ward Melville 136 13 Holly Cavalluzzo 10 09-AA Valley Central 136 14 Katie Brislin 10 03-AA FM 135 15 Kristen Borriello 9 09-AA Valley Central 135 16 Amanda Borroughs 12 02-AA Saratoga 134 17 Gina Talt 12 01-AA Mamaroneck 133 18 Madison Carr 10 02-AA Saratoga 132 19 Brigid Brennan 9 11-AA Northport 131 20 Rachel Paul 11 11-AA Sachem East 131 21 Ursula Svoboda 10 01-AA Suffern 131 |
Girls Class A - Burnt Hills a solid favorite |

Pre-Race Analysis ... Burnt Hills is a solid favorite in the Class A race ... Burnt Hills needed a very good performance to beat Queensbury at the Section 2 championships (Queensbury would be the favorite if they were at States instead of Burnt Hills). North Shore is a bit difficult to project due to some inconsistencies with some top runners (could be capable of closing the gap somewhat). Individual Race ... Aisling Cuffe (Cornwall) is undefeated and the top ranked runner in the nation (Aisling Cuffe is the early-line favorite to win Footlockers) ... First-year runner Kelsey Margie (Harborfields), Brittany Winslow (Queensbury) and Shaylyn Tuite (Pittsford Mendon) could have a very competitive race for the runner-up spot. Pre-Race Analysis ... East Aurora is the five-time defending Class B champion ... Coach Walt McLaughlin continues to have an excellent XC program at East Aurora (and 9th-grade daughter Marta McLaughlin has certainly helped) ... Coach Dan Doherty's Pearl River team is a solid choice to be second. Individual Race ... Christine Driscoll (Geneva) and Lauren Mullins (Johnson City) are the top ranked Class B runners... Girls Class C - Greenwich a slight favorite over Bronxville |
Projected Actual School Sect Score School Score =============== ==== ===== ================== ===== 1 Greenwich (02) 50 Bronxville 48 2 Bronxville (01) 55 Greenwich 51 3 Tully (03) 113 Tully 95 3 Wayland-Cohocton (05) 113 Wayland Cohocton 113 5 Fredonia (06) 145 Newark Valley 166 6 Rhinebeck (09) 150 Fredonia 175 7 Newark Valley (04) 155 Center Moriches 183 8 Friends Academy (08) 205 Friends Academy 185 9 Center Moriches (11) 215 Rhinebeck 225 10 Saranac Lake (07) 240 Saranac Lake 248 11 Gouverneur (10) 315 Gouverneur 310 |
Pre-Race Analysis ... Bronxville is the defending Class C champion ... Greenwich is last year's Class D champion (but moved to Class C in 2010). Interesting race from a handicapping point-of-view for the top two teams ... Based on the "overall seasonal speed ratings" used to rank runners, Greenwich has a bigger advantage than noted above in the projected scores (about a 20 point winning margin) ... However, race simulations can be weighted towards varying factors such as performance at particular courses, individual and team trends and recent performance ... Bronxville won their sectional race at Pawling with their best performance of the season ... Greenwich ran very well at their sectional meet (at Saratoga Park), and their speed numbers would have edged Bronxville in a fantasy dual-meet. The handicapper in me knows that performance at the course of the upcoming race deserves more weight than performance at other courses ... Bronxville gets the advantage from that factor ... Also, speed figures from Saratoga Park (by teams who race and train there frequently) are not always duplicated when teams go other courses (sometimes yes, but no on enough occasions to require consideration). The purpose of the projected scores is provide a "morning-line" (horse race analogy) or "seed times" (track & field analogy) based on performance to date ... and overall performance to date makes Greenwich the favorite ... The projected scores are weighted compromise ... in virtually all race simulations, performance at the #3 through #5 positions is the major factor in determining the winner of this race. Recent performance makes Tully and
Wayland-Cohocton even-up. Pre-Race Analysis ... Maple Grove is the solid favorite to win ... Geneseo and Seton Catholic are fairly close, but Geneseo has an advantage in depth. Remsen has been improving with every race and could challenge for the runner-up spot ... Not bad for a soccer team ... (Info from the Utica newspaper) - Remsen’s cross-country team qualified for the state meet by winning the Section III Class D title at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill ... after the meet, six runners met their soccer teammates at a nearby Thruway exit and went to Cortland State to play in the Section III Class D soccer final that evening ... they defeated Copenhagen 2-1 in sudden-victory overtime to advance to the state regional round on the same day as the State XC Championships ... Remsen (18-1-0) will play Section IV champion Milford at 5:30 p.m. at Chittenango High School Saturday after driving back from Pawling!!! ...
