Overall Contenders & Class Contenders Pre-season team rankings have problems: ... first, they are based (in large part) on last year's results ... more recent track results may or may not have relevance for the upcoming XC season ... some runners improve (some improve a lot) ... a few runners transfer or quit ... new runners can join a team and make a big difference ... So any pre-season rankings must be viewed in that context. What good are pre-season rankings? Once the XC season starts, I rank individual runners and teams based strictly on performance during the current season ... So pre-season rankings are not used during the season. For the most part, the team listing below is just an extension of the 2008 XC season into 2009 with a few modifications ... IF data for 5 runners on each team was not readily available, that team is probably NOT included below ... With rare exceptions, I ignored last year's modified runners. Initially, the Combined Class List included 70+ teams, but I began removing teams with lower scores to make computer race simulations more manageable ... Other teams could be included, but time constraints are necessary ... Data on selected teams by class is also posted including relevant track times at 3000m, 1500m, 1-Mile and Steeplechase. Remember ... this list is just an informational starting point ... This year I posted scores by individual class (because some people were interested) ... A lot can change between late July and November.

Where did the scores come from? ... In part, the scores are a composite of computer race simulations using 2008 seasonal speed ratings ... a few speed rating ranges were altered based on track results ... I manually manipulated some numbers (because I wanted to). Teams with ** above ... notes some of the uncertainty involved ... Warwick Valley - top runner Lillian Greibesland ruptured her achilles tendon last XC season and has not competed since (I wanted to see their approximate position if she returns) ... Cicero-North Syracuse - I've been informed a few runners may be skipping XC, but I'm ignoring that for now. In recent years, CNS has been one of the "bubble teams" when picking the At-Large selections for the Federation Meet, and they were not selected due to the quality in NY as a whole. This year, CNS has a nice influx of talented young runners plus good experienced runners and would very likely be the second best team in Section 3 (behind FM) and a legitimate Federation selection. If CNS is not at full strength, the Tully girls might be second-best in Section 3, so.... In General ... Fayetteville-Manlius is the odds-on favorite entering the 2009 XC season ... FM is the three-time defending National champion and appears to be just as strong this season ... There could be strong challenges from Saratoga and Shenendehowa, and possibly Queensbury, North Shore, Burnt Hills and others ... North Shore presents the biggest uncertainty in pre-season projection because their projection includes major modifications based on track times (and the projection above could have significant plus and minus variations) ... Additional information is given below by class.

Class AA - Girls ... Pre-Season 2009 |
Team Score Section-Class ------------------ ----- ------------- Fayetteville-Manlius 30 (03-AA) Saratoga 65 (02-AA) Shenendehowa 75 (02-AA) Monroe-Woodbury 140 (09-AA) Ward Melville 210 (11-AA) Northport 210 (11-AA) Shaker 220 (02-AA) Warwick Valley 235 ** (09-AA) Cicero-North Syracuse 240 ** (03-AA) Guilderland 250 (02-AA) Valley Central 280 (09-AA) North Rockland 285 (01-AA) Washingtonville 310 (09-AA) Arlington 315 (01-AA) Bay Shore 320 (11-AA) Smithtown 340 (11-AA) Bethlehem 355 (02-AA) |
Based on last year's XC ratings, Fayetteville-Manlius is the
clear favorite ... FM's top five returners makes them a favorite
to win NXN
(again) ... But FM may need some "new
blood" to protect against the loss of a top runner ... I do not know
this for certain, but I believe Gennie Ariotti will be running XC
for the first time as a senior, and Ariotti has run a decent 3000m in
track (10:55) ... Also, senior Kathryn Fanning is possibility
(she has been a soccer player), but may be considering XC (track PRs of
3000m (10:23), 1500m (4:51), 800m (2:19)).
FM Coach Bill Aris focuses on XC, and FM began preparing for NXN 2009 immediately after receiving their awards at NXN 2008 ... At one indoor track meet, Coach Aris told me that peaking the girls for three seasons a year is asking a lot, so some runners were training through one of the track seasons. Fayetteville-Manlius does not face a serious challenge at the league or sectional level ... their first serious challenge during the championship portion of the season will come on Nov 14th at the State Meet in Plattsburgh (from Saratoga or Shenendehowa) ... Nov 21st is the NY Federation Meet, and it will not surprise me if FM skips the Fed meet again because the NXN Regional is the following weekend (Nov 28) ... During the XC season, the "full" FM girl's team typically competes in two invitational races, usually McQuaid and Manhattan ... this year, McQuaid and Manhattan are on back-to-back weekends (Oct 3, Oct 10), so I'm not sure if FM will be racing at McQuaid (I know they are planning to go to Manhattan) ... Fayetteville-Manlius is "unique" in the nation because they have the ability to focus their entire season on winning NXN again ... BUT FM can not look past NY. Last year, I did not see any real serious threat to Fayetteville-Manlius in NY State; Burnt Hills looked very good and talented in pre-season, but for some reason, I felt FM would win decisively when it counted ... I have a different feeling this pre-season ... This is the handicapper in me who simply gets a "feeling" when looking at the past-performances and ponders the possibilities ... The raw numbers don't support it, but there is something that yells improvement ... and for a handicapper, Saratoga is great place to look. Saratoga was 4th at NXN and returns everybody (and then some) ... Fayetteville-Manlius has "set-the-bar" very high, but in this Internet-Age of instant information, everybody can see exactly where the bar is set and strive to reach it. Teams most likely to approach the bar are teams that are already good and have learned to thrive in an environment of intense competition ... and the Girl's teams of Section 2, NY State are the definition of that criteria. So what does Saratoga need?? ... First, they need a top runner to run with the other "elite" runners (and Keelin Hollowood certainly appears capable) ... Second, they have nice group of runners already running at a high XC level, but what catches my eye are enough individual performances at levels high enough to "scratch" FM's back-side ... Some consistency and minor improvement puts the Saratoga pack within reach (of course, that's easier said than done) ... and Saratoga probably needs one more runner to elevate to the next level (I think the possibilities are definitely there) ... Remember - these are just "feelings". Shenendehowa could also challenge FM, but Shen has a bit further to improve team-wise than Saratoga based on last year's XC performances ... Shenendehowa has a proven top runner at Portland Meadows (Lizzie Predmore finished 6th at NXN) and reasons to believe significant improvement is possible ... Danika Simsonson qualified for NXN as an individual in her first XC season and her abilities in track definitely suggest the possibility of stepping-to-the-next level in XC ... To compete with FM and Saratoga, Shenendehowa needs improved performances at the #4 and #5-positions, and that's a distinct possibility (Nicole Irving had some excellent track performances that "shout" improvement) ... Shenendehowa and Saratoga have to face each other in the Suburban Council League and Section 2 Class AA division, so we will get a decent look at their team strengths during the season ... Only one of them will qualify for the State Meet because only the winner of the Section 2 Class AA sectional goes to States ... Both teams will make Federations and both have always raced at Feds (which may give FM an advantage later on if FM skips Feds). Monroe-Woodbury should be much improved in 2009 with the addition of senior Megan Patrignelli and some nicely improved track performances from other runners ... How much Monroe-Woodbury improves is a guess at this point and could be interesting to watch during the season. |

Queensbury finished 5th at NXN
last year and they return their top four runners ... in addition,
Brittany Winslow had an excellent track season suggesting XC
improvement which gives Queensbury an incredible twin-duo
... However, from a handicapping perspective, the one question mark is
replacing the #5 runner ... for example, if their #5-finisher from NXN (who graduated) was
removed from the NXN scoring, Queensbury would have finished 12th
(rather than 5th), and 12th in the nation isn't too bad at all.
But this is New York State, and I find this a bit absurd: ... A team finishes 5th in the nation, returns their top four runners and is then projected to be only the #4 team in the State (overall) ... But that's the way it looks right now. Burnt Hills loses Sam Roecker and Meaghan Gregory to graduation and that obviously hurts ... But Burnt Hills is a deep and talented team (and some injuries hurt their chances last year) ... Molly Pezzulo is clearly a top runner ... Rachel Cyrus was injured and did not race at NXN last year; Rachel finished 38th at NTN in 2007 and her outdoor track performances indicate she could be back to form in XC 2009 ... Update: ... My database mistakenly listed Kiersten Anderson as a graduate in 2009, but she was actually a junior (which helps Burnt Hill). In their head-to-head match-up in Section 2, Queensbury has the advantage with their top four returning runners ... The question becomes, "Can Burnt Hills pack in enough runners at a high-enough level to challenge Queensbury at sectionals??" ... Again, only one of them makes it to States. Last year, Cornwall was well down my pre-season list of Class A teams, but Cornwall finished 2nd at States ... I wonder if their "new blood" runner Aisling Cuffe had anything to do with it ... Yes, one runner can make a big difference. |

Class B - Girls ... Pre-Season 2009 |
Team Score Section-Class ------------------ ----- ------------- North Shore 40 (08-B ) Pearl River 60 (01-B ) East Aurora 70 (06-B ) Honeoye Falls-Lima 75 (05-B ) Cobleskill 170 (02-B ) Mount Sinai 175 (11-B ) Scotia-Glenville 180 (02-B ) Broadalbin-Perth 185 (02-B ) Shoreham Wading River 190 (11-B ) |
The raw XC numbers say Pearl River
is the favorite, and usually, I much prefer established XC performances
compared to track performances when projecting XC ... But North Shore
has thrown a monkey-wrench into the process with some exceptional
improvements in track times at the longer distances. I know
Coach Neal Levy is looking forward to the upcoming season ...
North Shore has two top returning runners in Samantha Nadel and
Brianna Welch (both are definitely better than the XC-Rating
shown below), and the track performances by other runners "shout" big
improvement ... So I dusted-off my trusty dart board and made some
guesses
... Using this perspective, North Shore is clearly the top Class
B team (perhaps by more than the score above suggests). In the Combined Class projection above, I could place North Shore ahead of Queensbury, but Queensbury was 5th at NXN with their top four runners returning (I favor the "been-there, done-that, proved-it" scenario) ... North Shore could be really good and a legitimate NXN team, but now it's their turn to "prove-it". Pearl River's strength in the Class B projections is their strength through all five scorers ... East Aurora always closes any gaps, so I included a bit of that (East Aurora also has two runners named McLaughlin ... I wonder how Coach Walt McLaughlin will react to that) ... Honeoye Falls-Lima gets transfer Amanda Mooreland who will obviously help a lot. |

Teams with

... I have an obvious interest in Class C, so I included Bronxville
8th-grader Mary Cain and Pawling soccer player Samantha Jorgensen just
to see the results (the number in the parentheses is the team score
without them) ... I do not know - both could run XC?? ... Some
leagues in NY allow athletes to do two sports in the same season (I
don't know about Bronxville or Pawling ... Tully's league (OHSL) does
not allow it, and coaches of other sports wouldn't let it happen even if
it was allowed). The top four teams last year were Bronxville, Tully, Newark Valley and Rhinebeck (exactly the same as this year) ... Last year, Rhinebeck added "new blood" runner Elizabeth Marvin (a senior and a 10:00 runner at 3000m) and nearly beat Bronxville at States (Yes, one runner can make a difference) ... Newark Valley beat Tully for 3rd by simply out-running Tully, but Newark Valley losses Erin Cawley to graduation (the Class C champion). |
