When the fleet-footed Fayetteville-Manlius girl's cross-country team won the Nike Team Nationals in Oregon for the third straight year last December, their "triple crowns" effort had to rank as the finest team performance by female athletes in Section III history. Would you believe F-M is now training on a daily basis with the goal of Nike Team Nationals tide No. 4 firmly in mind? Thanks partly to the presence of four returning first team All-State runners in seniors Mackenzie Carter, Molly Malone, Hannah Luber and junior Courtney Chapman, coach Bill Aris' Flying Hornets are already ranked No. 1 in the pre-season New York State rankings. They will also likely be No. 1 in next month's USA rankings. Senior Hannah Luber: ... "We're not getting complacent," Luber said earlier this week. "We know that a lot of good teams in this state will be out to get us this fall. If we all improve our times from last year, it will be a good season, even if we don't win nationals." Coach Dan Doherty: ... "What F-M has accomplished already, is unbelievable," said Dan Doherty, editor of the state harrier ratings. He also coaches the talented Pearl River team in Section I. "Those F-M girls have raised the bar for the rest of us, and other teams are responding. I think F-M will get pushed harder this fall than they have in the past. Saratoga Springs and Shenendehowa both look strong up in Section II. I've heard that the team in California that finished second to F-M at the Nike Nationals - Saugus - is also looking for revenge. "F-M is capable of repeating again, but they will need to avoid injuries and develop solid runners in those 5-6-7 spots to back up their top four returning all-state kids." Already battling to earn the 5-6-7 spots on the varsity are sophomore Katie Sischo, senior Kathryn Fanning, senior Gennie Ariotti, junior Katie Convertino, sophomore Heather Martin and freshman Jillian Fanning. Sischo was a sixth team all-state pick last fall even though she hurt a leg late in 2008 and couldn't compete in Oregon. FM Coach Bill Aris: ... "Both our teams (boys and girls) have the potential to be stronger than they were last year," Aris said.
