ELIZABETHTOWN -- It was an ideal day for running Friday and senior standouts Lee Berube and Mary Kate Champagne took advantage of the conditions to shatter the course records in the Section VII cross-country championships over Cobble Hill Golf Course. Ticonderoga's Berube, who missed the mark by five seconds a year ago, won the boys' race in 14 minutes, 29 seconds to better the course record of 14:40 set by Peru's Joe McCloud in 1997. Meanwhile, Champagne obliterated her own course record set last year. The Seton Catholic ace rolled to victory in 16:34 to easily eclipse her record time of 17:29 in 2006. Teammate Genna Hartung, in another splendid effort, came home second in 17:29. Five of the six reigning team champions repeated, although in most classes, the margin of victory was not as great as last year. The winning teams and the first five runners not on a winning team are eligible to compete in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships a week from today in Norwood. Open runners for boys in Class B are: Brendan Courneene and Judd Collier, Beekmantown; Doug Osborne, Peru; and John Coupal and Josh Mesec, Northeastern Clinton. In Class C: Nate Muzzy, Kory Devins and Kurt Whitford, AuSable Valley, and Zach Young and Alex Beideck, Saranac Lake. In Class D: Pat Stewart, Zander McClelland and Matt Saulpaugh, Lake Placid, and Michael Champagne and Zach Ziemer, Seton Catholic. Open runners for girls in Class B are: Bailey Weightman, Beekmantown; Monique Arvisais-Anhalt, PHS; Sarah Rasco, Saranac; and Brittany Trahan and Meghan Rainville, Northeastern Clinton. In Class C: Brittany Woodring, Persephone Turetsky and Courtney Difiore, AuSable Valley, and Julie Bowler and Geanette Orton, Saranac Lake. In Class D: Heidi Baumbach, Lake Placid; Katie Karkoski and Amber Perkins, Ticonderoga; Mary Glenn, Seton Catholic; and Stephanie Pepper, Chazy. Alison Provost and Allison Pomerville, who led Peru to its first title in four years, shared Girls' Coach of the Year honors while Plattsburgh High's Kevin Larkin was named Boys' Coach of the Year. The Ray Holmes Sportsmanship Awards went to the AuSable Valley boys and Peru girls while Lee Berube, Ticonderoga, and Heidi Baumbach, Lake Placid, received the NYSPHSAA Senior Sportsmanship Awards. |
