NTN Boys & Girls Team Score Projections for 2005: ... Actual Scores Added Dec 3, 2005
Purpose
... The purpose of these projections
is to get a General Idea of team strength based on speed alone
... The purpose is NOT to predict exactly where each and every runners
will finish (that's impossible no matter how good the data) ... Many runners are so closely
rated that big swings in team scores (10, 20 or even 30 points) are
likely to occur ... I want ONLY an overall idea of where teams might
finish relative to each other (that's why exact finishes of
individuals is not my purpose). How the Projections were made ... These 2005 NTN projections were done by a method similar to 2004 (see this link for an explanation) ... This year I evaluated a few extra races for each team (additional races beyond just their State Meet races). The projections do NOT have a high degree of precision (or statistical certainty) ... I believe the individual ratings are "in-the-right-ballpark", but that may not be good enough because many runners are rated very close to each other - This was demonstrated at last year's NTN as large groups of runners were finishing at the rate of one to one-and-half runners per second ... IF any one or two runners for any team improves by only 15 or 20 seconds (or conversely runs slower than normal), that's a lotta team points! Speed is only one factor and it can be inconsistent for some runners ... Some teams have not raced in several weeks ... Traveling and time-zone changes will affect some teams ... The "festivities" of NTN will affect some teams more than others (for example, "let's just enjoy ourselves" rather than be completely focused on running at peak efficiency) ... So I actually expect some scores to be very different than the projections!!! Initial projections posted on Nov. 27, 2005... The Girls NTN Race ... Girls Projections Further Below ... Girls projections updated Nov 28, 2005 (Thousand Oaks CA was mistakenly used instead of Oak Park CA) Actual scores posted on Dec. 3, 2005... |

Post-Race Comments
... Saratoga won with a really good team
effort - Had somebody told me Saratoga would win with Steve
Murdock finishing as the #3 Saratoga runner, I would not have
believed it ... Greg Kiley popped a season-best speed rating
(189.6) as did Andrew Bangert (185.1) - (All
speed ratings are listed in the results) ... Good consistent races
by Greg Kelsey and Chris Allen yielded a winning Saratoga
performance ... Saratoga came prepared and performed. I thought York ran fairly close to projected form team-wise ... It must be remembered that most runners will not run their best in this type of championship race, and the awful running conditions will make it worse ... So York ran decently compared to the competition (Saratoga simply ran a big race to win) ... Last year, York got some big performances that did not happen this year. Fayetteville-Manlius got season-best performances from Tommy Gruenewald (4th) and Andrew McCann (14th) ... John Heron and Owen Kimple had slightly lower than normal performances ... The #5 position was about 18 seconds slower than normal which added about 20 points to the team score. Mead ran very well (and beat Joel Ferris just like last year) - but this year, the good Mead performance was predictable ... Just like last year, Joel Ferris did not run as well as projection and lost to Mead. Royal Simi had their worse race of the year ... I assume the running conditions had a lot to do with it ... As noted in the girl's post-race comments below, I would much rather see the NTN race run at the Mt. Sac XC course (in the same series of races as Footlocker West) ... But the conditions did not hurt Jesuit-Carmichael CA who ran much better than projection. Pre-Race Comments ... Predicting this type of national race is very difficult (some of the reasons are noted above) ... Last year demonstrated that most teams will NOT have their best race of the year at NTN ... York did not have their best race and they won handily ... FM did not have their best race and they finished second handily ... Any team racing at or near their potential will have an advantage, but who will that be?? York enters NTN 2005 by coming off their best team race of the season (the Illinois State Meet), and that makes them the slight favorite over Royal Simi ... York has proven they can handle the pressures of NTN and perform very well ... If York can duplicate their State Meet performance, York will be difficult to beat ... On the flip-side, York has shown some inconsistencies during the season which could make them vulnerable; however, some of those inconsistencies can be attributed to sickness and injury - according to one Illinois newspaper (Argus Press Spectator), the Dettmans were battling viral, bacterial and sinus infections for several weeks and Nick Kuczwara had a shin splint problem which had him riding a stationary bike for much of the season (recent race results show a nice improvement) ... In terms of team depth, York can go six deep and that's a nice advantage on other teams (it was one factor in their success at NTN last year). Royal Simi also had their best race of the year at the California State Meet - Royal was at full strength (for a change) and they performed very well ... Clearly a strong contender for the win. Fayetteville-Manlius (FM) is lurking just behind York and Royal ... The key for FM is the performance of the #4 and #5 runners (of course, that can be said for most other teams) ... Andrew McCann could pop a performance leading to an FM win. Joel Ferris, Mead, Saratoga and CBA-NJ are not that far behind and could challenge with season-best performances ... As noted above, the very competitive nature of this race has runners finishing at the rate of one to one-and-a-half runners per second in critical team scoring positions ... Any runner improving by only 15 or 20 seconds makes a big team scoring change, and that gives these teams a chance to pull-off an upset ... One common thread that applies to most teams (both boys and girls) is an already demonstrated inconsistency in overall team performance (meaning most teams have shown both good and not-so-good performances) ... Sometimes teams are able to win with an off-day, but that will be difficult at NTN because of team quality at NTN. |

Post-Race Comments ... Hilton won with a super team race ... Hilton took a big early lead at the 1K mark (61 points) and maintained consistency throughout the remainder of the race (team score in the 80s) - Amanda Griggs ran well as did all the Hilton scorers which was the precursor of an expected Hilton victory (Shelby Herman and Ashley Jones ran very well as the #4 and #5 runners) ... Hilton Coach Mike Szczepanik did an excellent job in preparing the team - his choice to skip the NY Federation Meet paid off with a National Championship. One thing to note concerning the predicted team scores is that the top teams actually scored quite a bit less than projected ... In this type of championship race, that usually indicates that the top teams ran well in comparison to the competition and that a fair number of teams ran very poorly compared to their normal form ... The running conditions at Portland Meadows were awful for the boy's race (which ran first) and even worse for the girl's race - The lousy conditions spread the girl's race out significantly more than the boy's ... Hilton's team spread of only 51 seconds was outstanding for this race and running conditions. Saratoga ran a good race (...as can be noted in the results - their speed ratings ranged from 152 to 122 which indicates a reasonably normal race for them) ... The difference at NTN was that Hilton was able to place three runners in the top 13 finishers while Saratoga's 3rd finisher was 30th (and Hilton's 4th was 19th). Southlake Carroll TX ran very well as expected (Miranda Walker and Brooke Upshaw finished 3rd and 4th) ... Corona Del Mar CA did not have a good race - I believe the running conditions were a big disadvantage for them - I would much rather see the NTN race run at the Mt. Sac XC course (in the same series of races as Footlocker West). Naperville IL was the biggest surprise (a real good 4th place finish) ... Lakeville North MN finished much lower than projected because top runner Elizabeth Yetzer (a Footlocker Finalist) did not run. Overall, I'm reasonably pleased with the girl's projections versus actual scores ... After seeing the running conditions before the race, I thought the projections would be much worse. Pre-Race Comments ... This is a much closer contest than last year when Saratoga was much-the-best ... This year Saratoga is missing two runners (Nicole Blood and Caitlin Lane), but they are still one of the favorites to win ... I believe the top six teams above are capable of winning with good performances because there some noticeable team inconsistencies. Saratoga ran extremely well in the recent Footlocker NE (at Van Cortlandt Park) - three runners had season-best performances (Lindsey Ferguson, Ashley Campbell and Kipling Hill) - A repeat at NTN will likely mean a repeat Saratoga win ... But Saratoga did not run particularly well on the NTN course last year (which is very different than Van Cortlandt Park) - and Saratoga almost always runs extremely well at Van Cortlandt Park (so the Footlocker race may not be a good predictor for NTN) ... Saratoga has had some inconsistent performances at the #4 and #5 positions and that will obviously be a key at NTN. A Hilton score is really difficult to predict ... Amanda Griggs was the top Hilton runner through most of the season, but she had sub-par performances at both the NY State Class Meet and Footlocker NE due to physical problems (the problem at Footlocker was related to her foot) ... Despite Grigg's off-race at States, Hilton lost to Saratoga by only one point ... Hilton's Caroline Schultz and Allison Sawyer trained and focused for top performances at States and Footlocker (and hopefully NTN), and they were very successful in that regard - Both had big improvements at States and showed even more improvement at Footlocker where they finished 13th and 14th (those types of sequential improvements are very uncommon) ... IF Griggs returns to her former form (or close to it) and the other four Hilton runners remain consistent with recent performances, then Hilton will win NTN. Corona Del Mar is an excellent team (and perhaps the most consistent of the contenders) ... My ratings have Anne St. Geme as the projected NTN race winner, although Betsy Bies (Yankton), Elizabeth Yetzer (Lakeville) and several others will be difficult to beat. I had Southlake Carroll ranked high before the Footlocker races ... Then two Southlake runners qualified for Footlocker Finals (Brooke Upshaw and Miranda Walker) and another Southlake runner (Tara Upshaw) ran really well - and that makes Southlake TX a legitimate contender. |
