Pre-Season ... Profiles of Top NY State GIRLS - Cross Country 2008 |
July 14, 2008 ...
Individual Runner Watch List - Girls 2008 |
I repeat myself every year -> NY is remarkably deep in talent ... Two Footlocker Finalists ... A host of national-caliber teams ... Plus more runners with enough talent to challenge the top runners ... 2008 will be another great cross country season in NY. The individual profiles are not separated by class (I looked at all runners regardless of class) ... I wanted to limit the individual profiles to 10-15 runners, but I went a bit deeper to ensure coverage of that range plus runners from each class. Below the individual profiles are my "Watch-Lists" for Class AA, A, B, C and D" ... They are generally arranged by last year's overall speed ratings (so "new XC runners" are not included) ... I re-did the last year's final ratings to include Federations, Footlocker and NTN. Remember - These are my own Watch-Lists ... and I do not take the exact order of the lists too seriously (and neither should anybody else) ... Once the season begins, these lists are not used in any way to rank individual runners. |
Profiles of the Top Returning NY State Girls
How To Read the Table
Information: The number following the
name is the school grade for the 2008 XC season. The "Class"

below the name are, in order, the race name,
race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating
(higher is faster). Selected track data are also listed for
most runners ... Girls XC performance

Emily Lipari 11 Roslyn (Class A - Sec 8)
Emily is the defending Federation XC champion and a
Footlocker Finalist ... her excellent 6th-place finish at Footlocker Finals
makes her the top returning finalist in the Northeast and #4 in the nation ...
In outdoor track, Emily was the NY State champion in both the 3000m and 1500m
(very impressive performances) ... At Nike Outdoor Nationals, she was 2nd at
1-Mile and 8th at 2-Miles ... These outstanding performances stamp Emily Lipari
as the top returning harrier in NY State and one of the best in the nation. Shelby Greany 12 Suffern (Class AA - Sec 1)
Senior Shelby Greany has been a top NY runner since
7th-grade ... She has the opportunity to join the "elite club" of girls who have
qualified for four Footlocker Finals (and she is certainly a favorite to
accomplish this task) ... Shelby is the champion steeplechaser in both NY State
and the nation ... In track, she ran multiple sub-5:00 races at 1600m (or
1-Mile) and a career-best 3000m at Penn Relays (9:48.92) ... As usual, Shelby Greany will be in contention for the title of best harrier in NY.Footlocker Finals 12/8/2007 24 18:25.0 143 Footlocker NE-Sd 11/24/2007 9 17:56.7 153 NY Federation 11/17/2007 5 18:42.2 142 NY States-Class AA 11/10/2007 2 17:53.9 148 Section 1-Class AA 11/2/2007 1 18:44.62 142 Rockland Co Champ 10/25/2007 1 17:47.31 137 Manhattan Inv-EaSt 10/13/2007 3 14:15.35 149 Brewster Invite-A 10/6/2007 1 18:23.0 139 Suffolk Coach-VarB 9/29/2007 1 19:08.79 139 Section Ten-I 9/22/2007 1 18:49.4 142 Suffern Inv-A 9/15/2007 1 17:47.30 141 Wizard Var A 9/8/2007 1 18:18.3 134 Footlocker Finals 12/9/2006 19 18:38.0 143 Footlocker NE-Chm 11/25/2006 6 17:58.8 152 |

Samantha Roecker 12 Burnt Hills (Class A - Sec 2)
I love watching Samantha Roecker race because she is
very competitive (and she is loaded with talent) ... Her race with Emily Lipari
at XC States last fall in Norwood was a classic ... She won the NY-NTN qualifier
and finished 3rd at NTN Nationals (the top finish of all NY girls) ... In my
opinion, Samantha would be a Footlocker Finalist if she was given the
opportunity to race at Footlocker Northeast (but team responsibilities and the
conflict between Footlocker and Nike prevent it) ... In track, she popped an
outstanding four 3000m races in sub-9:50 time, including a career-best 9:42.16
second-place finish at outdoor States ... add in multiple sub-5:00 miles, and it
easy to see why Samantha is one of the best runners in the nation.NTN Nationals 12/1/2007 3 19:06.9 148 NY-NTN Regional 11/24/2007 1 18:18.5 152 NY States-Class A 11/10/2007 2 17:34.3 155 Section 2-Class A 11/2/2007 1 17:04.8 150 Suburban Council 10/27/2007 2 17:17.36 148 Dual Meet (SPAC) 10/16/2007 2 17:21.0 146 Burnt Hills Inv-III 10/13/2007 1 17:14.0 148 McQuaid Invite 9/29/2007 1 17:02.0 147 Manchester Inv 9/22/2007 3 18:36.0 134 Footlocker NE-Chm 11/25/2006 33 18:50.3 135 NY Federation 11/18/2006 9 18:52.8 140 |

Lillian Greibesland 11 Warwick Valley (Class AA - Sec 9)
I was watching the live Internet broadcast of the
DMR at NON Nationals (a great race between Warwick and Saratoga) ... The
anchor-leg by Lillian Greibesland qualified for a "WOW factor" (she popped an
outstanding 1600m split 4:50.0 which helped Warwick set the National DMR record)
... Lillian demonstrated incredible range in track starting with a fast 400m
(57.3 relay split), fast 800m (2:10.79 open time) and a career-best 3000m at
OCIAA (9:56.65) ... She ran very well during XC season, and it should be very
interesting to watch Lillian this coming fall.NTN Nationals 12/1/2007 24 19:56.4 131 NY-NTN Regional 11/24/2007 10 19:21.7 131 NY States-Class AA 11/10/2007 8 18:19.0 140 Section 9-Class AA 11/2/2007 2 17:45.49 140 OCIAA Champion 10/26/2007 2 17:31.90 138 Sec 1 Coaches-3 10/20/2007 4 19:04.97 136 Manhattan Inv-EaSt 10/13/2007 10 14:36.95 142 Warwick Wave-1 9/29/2007 2 18:07.5 139 Pepperdine Inv 9/22/2007 2 18:39.2 135 Suffern Inv-B 9/15/2007 1 18:02.14 136 NY Federation 11/18/2006 25 19:30.0 128 |

Courtney Chapman 10 Fayetteville-Manlius (Class AA - Sec 3)
Courtney Chapman was the top FM runner at States,
Federation and NTN Championships (and FM was the best team in the nation) ...
Her time Federations (18:03.8) ranks her as the 7th-fastest girl ever at Bowdoin
Park ... In track, Courtney popped a huge 3000m PR at the Oneida Invite
(9:48.02) and finished 7th in the 3000m at outdoor States ... and she will only
be a sophomore this coming season.NTN Nationals 12/1/2007 8 19:23.6 142 NY-NTN Regional 11/24/2007 5 18:54.5 140 NY Federation 11/17/2007 2 18:03.8 155 NY States-Class AA 11/10/2007 3 17:55.4 148 Section 3-Class AA 11/2/2007 2 17:53.2 139 Manhattan Inv-EaSt 10/13/2007 14 14:41.94 140 McQuaid Invite 9/29/2007 7 17:37.0 136 Chittenango Inv-2 9/15/2007 4 18:11.4 136 NTN Nationals 12/2/2006 46 20:53.5 119 NY Federation 11/18/2006 58 20:13.5 114 |

Molly Pezzulo ran very well during XC season through
sectionals, but then a calf injury caused her to miss the major championship
portion of the season (States, NTN qualifier, and NTN) ... In track, Molly ran a
3000m PR at Yale (10:01.26) ... she finished 5th at indoor States in the 3000m
... At outdoor States, Molly won the unseeded division of the 1500m and finished
8th overall with another PR (4:39.13) ... Expect her to be one of the top
runners in the State.Section 2-Class A 11/2/2007 2 17:30.7 142 Suburban Council 10/27/2007 3 17:27.60 145 Dual Meet (SPAC) 10/16/2007 3 17:27.0 144 McQuaid Invite 9/29/2007 3 17:10.0 145 Manchester Inv 9/22/2007 2 18:25.0 138 NY Federation 11/18/2006 44 19:54.6 120 NY States-Class A 11/11/2006 18 19:05.9 122 Section 2-Class A 11/3/2006 13 19:12.3 109 McQuaid-Sd AA 9/30/2006 22 19:19.0 105 |

Mackenzie began the 2007 XC season with a foot
injury that slowed her somewhat initially ... But come championship time, she
finished an excellent 4th at States, Feds and NTN regional ... then capped off
the season with a 10th-place finish at NTN Nationals ... In track, Mackenzie set
PRs at 3000m (10:12.59) and 1500m (4:34.13) - the latter was an outstanding
performance at outdoor States that earned her 3rd-place ... she is clearly a
key-runner in FM's bid to repeat as national champions.NTN Nationals 12/1/2007 10 19:30.8 140 NY-NTN Regional 11/24/2007 4 18:51.1 141 NY Federation 11/17/2007 4 18:36.1 144 NY States-Class AA 11/10/2007 4 18:06.0 144 Section 3-Class AA 11/2/2007 4 18:04.7 135 Manhattan Inv-EaSt 10/13/2007 19 14:52.55 136 McQuaid Invite 9/29/2007 20 18:20.0 121 Chittenango Inv-2 9/15/2007 6 18:36.3 128 NTN Nationals 12/2/2006 4 19:33.1 146 NY Federation 11/18/2006 8 18:49.9 141 |

Meaghan Gregory 12 Burnt Hills (Class A - Sec 2)
Meaghan Gregory is definitely one of the best
runners in the State, and has been a top runner throughout her excellent high
school career ... Unfortunately, her 2007 XC season was hampered by "mono" - she
missed nearly two months of competition, but returned to help Burnt Hills finish
5th at NTN Nationals (with a healthy Meaghan Gregory and Molly Pezzulo, Burnt
Hills would likely have been 2nd to FM at NTN Nationals) ... Meaghan returned to
form during indoor track and set a 3000m PR at Yale (9:52.27) and won indoor
States at 3000m (also ran a 4:54.5 1600m relay split at NSIC Nationals) ... In

Erin Cawley has had a really good high school career
(and I've had the opportunity to watch some of her races throughout her career)
... But more importantly, she keeps getting better and better ... Erin had a
real good race against Caitlin Lane at XC States where she finished 2nd ... She
followed that with an 11th-place finish at Federations ... In track, Erin ran
her best at States with a 2nd-place finish (to Shelby Greany) in the
steeplechase ... her 2000m steeplechase time (6:53.19) broke the Section 2
record by nearly 9 seconds ... Erin Cawley enters the 2008 XC season as the

Allison lowered her 3000m PR by a huge margin (to 10:22.55) ... During outdoor
track, she lowered it by another nice margin and finished 9th at States

Kathryn Buchan 12 Fayetteville-Manlius (Class AA - Sec 3)
Kathryn Buchan has experienced some injuries during
her running career causing her to take-a-break-from-racing ... She started the
2007 XC season with an impressive win at the Chittenango Invite, but suffered an
ankle injury during the race and did not compete for over a month-and-a-half
(when she returned she was clearly not 100 percent) ... Recuperated during the
indoor track season (did not race), and then ran her two fastest times ever at
3000m at the outdoor State qualifier and States (she finished 13th
at States in 10:12.86) ... A healthy Kathryn Buchan will obviously help FM in their quest to
repeat as national champs. I make Shelby Greany a slight favorite because of her experience and ability to run well when it counts ... The FM girls will be close (but how close??) ... If Lillian Greibesland decides XC is her forte, look out! ... and I think the two freshmen need to be watched very closely! CLASS A I suspect a repeat of the race between Emily Lipari and Sam Roecker at States 2007 is very possible at States 2008 ... I also suspect some other runners may be close (such as Molly Pezzulo and Meaghan Gregory) ... Burnt Hills could be the 2nd-best team in the nation (behind FM), but they may have a very close encounter with Queensbury at sectionals just to make it to States ... I wish the NYSPHSAA State Class Meet had some provision for at-large teams. CLASS B Class B appears very competitive at the top end ... McKenna Coughlin and Lauren Mullins have shown nice improvement and will give Johnson City a good one-two ... Brianna Welch is coming off an injury and has had more success at track than XC ... In contrast, Jaime Wallace has shown better performances at XC ... The runner to "watch-out" for could be Brenna Symoniak (she could be a serious challenger at States). CLASS C Erin Cawley enters the season as the favorite, but Allison Lasnicki has been improving a lot ... I suspect both runners will have higher numbers than shown below ... CLASS D Genna Hartung and Amanda Moreland enter the season as co-favorites ... The big news with respect to Class D is that Greenwich drops from down from Class C ... The top returning Greenwich runners (Cady Kuzmich and Roxanne Henningson) should be serious contenders, but in all honesty, I'm not sure what to make of Greenwich based on their outdoor track season (very sparse results).
