Individual Runner Watch List - Boys 2010

The individual profiles are not separated by class (I looked at all runners regardless of class) ... I wanted to limit the individual profiles to 10-15 runners, but I went a bit deeper to ensure coverage of that range plus most classes.

Below the individual profiles are my "Watch-Lists" for Class AA, A, B, C, D and CHSAA-PSAL-AIS ... They are arranged by last year's overall speed ratings (so "new XC runners" are not included) ... Last year's final ratings to include Federations, Footlocker and NXN.

Remember - These are my own Watch-Lists ... I make them available so viewers can see who the top individuals are and what they have done ... and I do not take the exact order of the lists too seriously (and neither should anybody else) ... Once the season begins, these lists are not used in any way to rank individual runners.

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2010 XC season. The "Class" in parentheses pertains to the 2010 XC season. The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster). Selected track data are also listed for most runners. My Boys XC performance database and Boys track & field performance database are available on separate web-pages.

Otis Ubriaco 12 Burnt Hills (Class A - Sec 2)

Otis Ubriaco enters the 2010 XC season as the top rated harrier in NY State ... Otis won the State Class A race, was 2nd at Federations and won the NXN-NY Regional ... In outdoor track, Otis won the NY State 3200m race with gutsy come-from-behind PR (9:04.75) and then posted a 1600m relay split PR at NBN Nationals (4:12.05) ... However, there are serious challengers for the top spot in NY.

Shaun Thompson 12 Baldwinsville (Class AA - Sec 3)

Shaun Thompson ran very well throughout the 2009 XC season ... he was 3rd at both States (Class AA) and Federation Championships ... Shaun looked very strong during outdoor track and won the NY State Steeplechase (9:20.30, breaking the Section 3 record) ... Will be a serious challenger for the top spot in NY.

Tim Luthin 12 Warwick (Class AA - Sec 9)

Tim Luthin is another serious challenger for the top spot ... Posted good XC performances all season - was 8th at Feds, 11th at States (Class AA) and 10th at the Manhattan Championship race ... Tim ran very well during track ... 3200m PR at outdoor States (9:05.88 finishing 3rd) and excellent relay splits at NBN Nationals (1600m-4:12.39, 800m-1:51.99).

Edward Owens 12 Packer Collegiate (NYSAIS)

Edward Owens was 21st at Footlocker-NE (6th best underclassman in the Footlocker-NE race and the top returning NYer) ... Posted really good times throughout track ... Would have finished 2nd in the State Steeplechase (9:28.95), but was DQed for stepping over the line ... Came back to take 3rd at NBN National 2000m Steeple (6:00.28) and was 11th in the NBN National 5000m (15:23.20) ... also PRed at 3200m (9:19.12).

Sam was the top high school finisher at the Utica Boilermaker 15K (45th overall, 50:08, 5:23 pace, 11,500+ runners).

Andrew Roche ran consistently well during the fall ... at States (his lowest speed rating of the year) was actually an exceptional effort because he came down with the flu during week ... Set some nice PRs during track including 3200m (9:20.94) and 1600m (4:26.50).

Mark McGurrin was another victim of the flu during XC (the week of sectionals) ... rebounded with some nice performances at States, Regionals and NXN Nationals ... also ran sub-13:00 at Manhattan ... Set PRs in track at 1600m (4:22.04) and 800m (1:58.9 relay split, 1:59.15 open).

 CLASS A

Otis Ubriaco was the Class A favorite entering the 2009 XC season (and won the Class A
race at States) ... 2010 is a repeat - Otis is a solid favorite in Class A (and the top
rated harrier in all classes) ... Not sure what to do with Chris Pohlot - he ran for
Shoreham-Wading River in Oct 2009, but then I believe he transferred to St Anthony's;
seems he transferred back to Shoreham (SWR jumps to Class A in 2010) because I have
one outdoor track result for him; decided not to profile him above due to uncertainty.

Jesse Garn is the pre-season favorite in Class B ... Jesse was 5th at last year's
Class B race and the four guys above him graduated (plus Kevin Hoose (Honeoye Falls)
moves up to Class A) ... Sophomore Colin Kerr is close behind and could challenge
for the top spot ... Also have to assume improvement from other runners, but I'm
not certain which of them to pick in the pre-season.

 Class C

Holland Patent was the State Class C Champion last year and the twins (Dylan and
Cody Racha) will lead Holland Patent again in 2010 ... Greenwich and Lake George
both move up to Class C in 2010, so I expect Austin Lane and Willie Underwood
will challenge for the top spot.

Note:  Chad Noelle (Greene, Sec 4) finished 2nd at Outdoor States in both the
3200m (9:04.77) and 1600m (4:11.97); Chad plays soccer in the fall, but was
considering XC ... Should he decide to run XC, he would become the favorite
in Class C (and probably a co-favorite for all classes with Otis Ubriaco).
