Pre-Season ... Profiles of Top NY State BOYS - Cross Country 2008

July 16, 2008 ...

Individual Runner Watch List - Boys 2008
New York took another big-hit from graduation in June 2008 ... Boys cross country is typically a "senior-dominated" sport at the top - On average, nearly 50 percent of the "top runners" at sectionals, States and Feds are seniors ... This past year at Feds, 14 of the top 15 finishers were seniors ... At the State Class Meet, 21 of the top 30 were seniors (merged results).

So there are top spots to be filled once again ... I'm optimistic that NY will "re-stock" quickly and do well in 2008.

The individual profiles are not separated by class (I looked at all runners regardless of class) ... I wanted to limit the individual profiles to 10-15 runners, but I went a bit deeper to ensure coverage of that range plus most classes.

Exact placement on this list not that important to me, but I know it is to some viewers (and it shouldn't be because pre-season rankings have limited usefulness ... I just enjoy looking at the profiles with the side-by-side stats as if it were a racing form with pari-mutuel betting).

Below the individual profiles are my "Watch-Lists" for  Class AA, A, B, C, D and CHSAA-PSAL-AIS ... They are arranged by last year's overall speed ratings (so "new XC runners" are not included) ... I re-did the last year's final ratings to include Federations, Footlocker and NTN.

Remember - These are my own Watch-Lists ... and I do not take the exact order of the lists too seriously (and neither should anybody else) ... Once the season begins, these lists are not used in any way to rank individual runners.

Profiles of Top Returning NY State Boys

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2008 XC season. The "Class" in parentheses pertains to the 2008 XC season. The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster).  Selected track data are also listed for most runners.  My Boys XC performance database and Boys track & field performance database are available on separate web-pages.

Joe Whelan    12    Hamburg    (Class A - Sec 6)
Joe Whelan unfortunately broke his foot at XC sectionals and was unable to compete at States, Feds or Footlocker ... He did not compete during the indoor track season ... Joe ran very impressively at the outdoor State Championships in finishing 5th at 3200m (9:15.92 PR) and 2nd in the Steeplechase (9:25.36 which broke his own Section 6 record) ... he also set PRs at 1600m (4:24.24) and 800m (1:59.82).

Based on his available XC results in 2007 and his performance at outdoor States in track, Joe Whelan is the #1 projected runner for XC 2008 ... However, there other runners very close, and this could be a very competitive season for the top individual spot come November.

Demitri Goutos    12    Saratoga    (Class AA - Sec 2)
Demetri Goutos ran consistently well during XC 2007 ... he won the very competitive Suburban Council and Section 2 Class AA sectionals ... he finished 9th at States, 8th at Feds (making him the top returning runner from Feds), and 24th at Footlocker NE (making him the #2 returning Footlocker runner because 22 of the top 24 were seniors) ... Demetri ran very well during indoor track and won the State Championship at 3200m ... His outdoor track season shows sparse results, but apparently he suffered a groin injury which prevented competition (from an Albany Times Union newspaper article) ... On July 4th, Demetri won the Saratoga Firecracker 4-Miler (avg 5:11 per mile).

Demtri Goutos could easily be considered co-top projection for XC 2008.

Alex Hatz    11     Fayetteville-Manlius   (Class AA - Sec 3)
Alex Hatz ran very well in his first season of XC in 2007 ... he showed nice improvement and finished 21st Feds (making him the #5 returning Fed runner) ... In track at the indoor State Championships, Alex finished 2nd in the 1600m (4:22.62) behind Kyle Merber ... I didn't see Alex during the outdoor season until State qualifiers, and at that time, I thought he looked physically stronger ... In outdoors, Alex popped some quick times at short distances of 400m (52.76) and 800m (1:55.4) ... he set a 3200m PR at his only effort at that distance during the season (9:19.43) ... Alex finished 3rd at outdoor States at 1600m and his time (4:13.94) is one of the fastest ever by NY sophomore.

The only question is Alex's ability to carry his speed over 5000m on cross country terrain ... IF he can, Alex could become the top individual harrier in 2008.

Chris Stogsdill won race divisions at five invitational XC races in 2007 including the McQuaid Invite ... he finished 2nd at States (Class B) in a good competitive race with Alex Deir ... In track, Chris finished 2nd at indoor States at 1000m (2:33.66) ... During outdoor season, Chris set PRs at 1600m (4:17.52) and 3200m (9:17.41), and finished 10th at States at 3200m ... Chris won both the 5000m and 1500m at Empire State Games in July.

Drew Perrilli made a very nice improvement in his XC performances from his freshmen to sophomore seasons ... Drew's performances during the championship portion of XC 2007 rate him very high for 2008 ... he finished 5th at States (Class AA), 17th at Feds (making him the #2 Fed returner) and 26th at Footlocker NE (making him the #3 Footlocker returner) ... and that's why Drew Perrilli is projected very high.

Alex Deir won the State Class B Championship race at Norwood-Norfolk in 2007 (a competitive race against Chris Stogsdill) ... Alex did not race at Feds or Footlocker ... Alex also did not run indoor track, although Honeoye Falls-Lima fields a very good nordic ski team during the winter (but I do not know if he competed this year) ... In outdoor track, Alex ran a very good Steeplechase at sectionals (9:32.02).

Dan Harris    11    Shenendehowa    (Class AA - Sec 2)
Dan Harris had a big performance in winning the NTN Regional race at Bowdoin Park (this clearly helped Shenendehowa beat Warwick Valley) ... Dan then performed very well during both track seasons ... In indoors, he finished 5th at States at 3200m (9:34.15) ... In outdoors, Dan set a 1600m PR (4:22.0) in a dual meet and 3200m PR (9:20.36) at States - his win in the unseeded section of the 3200m at States was very impressive (he won the heat by 11 seconds) ... With continued improvement, Dan Harris could be serious challenger for the top spot in NY.

Austin Lane    9    Greenwich    (Class D - Sec 2)
Austin Lane (brother of Caitlin Lane) was the top 8th-grader last XC season ... ran several good performances at Saratoga Park and finished 23rd at States ... In indoor track, Austin won the NSIC National Mile Race for 7th/8th graders at the Armory (4:44.40 PR) ... He did not run outdoor track (I have read he took the season off due to a concussion, but I do not the accuracy of that ... Update: Austin did suffer a serious head injury, but is recovering and hopes to be at full strength by XC season).

 CLASS AA

Demetri Goutos is the slight pre-season favorite based on last year's results ...
I expect Alex Hatz, Dan Harris and Drew Perilli will be the top contenders, but
there's plenty of talent and possibilities from other runners as well. However,
Demetri Goutos is in the #1 position during pre-season ... Alex Hatz would get
the nod if track results were the main criteria, but proven ability at XC is
more important (at least I think so) ... There's nothing better than actual XC
results during the season itself.

 CLASS A

Joe Whelan appears to be a solid favorite entering the 2008 XC season ...
Niskayuna drops down to Class A and brings some good runners that could challenge
for top spots - Louis Serafini has run several fast 1600m races (4:23) and finished
4th at indoor States ... a whole group of runners appear competitive for the top
five to ten spots in Class A.

 CLASS B

Class B appears to be strong and competitive at the top end ... The top finishers
at last year's Class Meet (Chris Stogsdill and Alex Deir) enter the season as the
slight co-favorites ... Several runners appear to be serious challengers, such as
Bobby Andrews, Mike Hickey, Scott Anderson, Jeff Martinez, Sean Curry and Steve
Mangan ... Could be one of the best races at States.

 Class C

Max Straneva (and Chenango Valley) drop from Class B to Class C, and Max Straneva
becomes the favorite based on his excellent performances in both XC and track.
I believe some stiff challenges may arise from several runners ... Joey Blazey
ran well in Newark Valley's title season ... The Canastota runners (Robbie
Argentine and Aaron Walker) are very good and could surprise a lot of people ...
Colin Seidl finished 3rd at States in the Steeplechase in very good time (9:33.62)
and could emerge as the most serious challenger ... My Tully bias believes Nate
Webber will be a challenger (Nate has made some impressive speed and strength
improvements in track).

 CLASS D

Class D looks very competitive ... Entering the season, I might give a slight
advantage the Mike Champagne based on his track results, but Jon Eng and Austin
Lane are very close ... Dan Young finished 4th at States last year and is
clearly in the hunt as are Jason Phillips and Chris Martin ... Based on the
speed ratings, you could also expect other runners to emerge near the top.
