NY State Track & Field
Championships (June 8-9, 2001) ...
The 2001 New York State Track & Field Championships were hosted by
Section 8 (Nassau County) at the Mitchel Athletic Complex located
near Hofstra University on Long Island. The meet is conducted over a
two-day period (Friday afternoon and Saturday). Athletes from four state
associations competed ... NYSPHSAA (Public High School Athletic
Association), NYSAIS (Association of Independent Schools), CHSAA (Catholic
High School Athletic Association) and PSAL (Public School Athletic League
- New York City). Many events are conducted as both
"Class" Finals and "Championship" Finals ...
"Class" Finals determine the NYSPHSAA champions (for the 11
Sections in the state) for Class A, Class B and Class C/D ... the
"Championship" Finals combine athletes from all four state
associations to determine the Federation champions. Several events
are conducted solely as "Championship" Finals (3000/3200m,
1500/1600m, Steeplechase, 4x800m relays).
Day One: Sunny &
warm (warmer than expected ... mid 70s to low 80s during the afternoon).
Mike Allen (Mount Markham) was the sole Section 3 individual to win ...
Mike won the Class C/D 800m (1:55.38) ... CBA's Brian McNiff was 3rd in
the same race (1:58.64). The girl's 3000m race was won in impressive
front-running style by Molly Huddle (Elmira ND, 9:43.40) ... the
section 3 girls ran extremely well with Laurel Burdick (FM,
9:49.69) finishing 2nd overall and first in class A ... Jackie
Kosakowski (Sauquoit, 10:03.71) finished 6th overall and 2nd in class
C/D ... Lia Cross (Skan, 10:24.98) finished 11th overall and 3rd in
class B.
Below are Day
One Results .
Day Two: Another sunny
and warm day (temperatures mid 70s to mid 80s). Results and comments are
below. (Note: just found out that Mount Markham was the Class C/D
4x800 Relay champions running 8:04.55 with Scott Abraham, Neil Case,
Dominic Aeschlimann, and Mike Allen ... the results sent to the press box
did not identify Mount Markham correctly). In the girls 1500m race, Laurel
Burdick (FM, 4:40.44) finished 6th overall and 3rd in Class A ... Jackie
Kosakowski (Sauquoit, 4:48.22) finished 15th overall and 4th in Class
C/D ... Vanessa Everding (Skaneateles, 4:45.99) finished 12th
