Odds & Ends of Interest (Outdoor Track 2010)

May 10, 2010 Update ... Several New NY State Records ...

Girls 7th-Grade 800 Meters ... Emma Gallagher (Garden City, Section 8) ran 2:14.02 at the Loucks Games (May 7, 2010) ... Previously, there was no accepted Girls 7th-Grade Record at 800 meters, but Larry Byrne has accepted this mark as the new 7th-Grade Record.

Melissa Kurzdorfer (Lancaster, Section 6) set new All-Age NY State Records in the Shot Put (49-09.5) and Hammer (192-08) at the Hartford CT Public Invitational on May 8, 2010 (results at: http://mysportsresults.com/Results/Results/39thHPHSOutdoorInvite-20100508.htm) ... Melissa Kurzdorfer set the NY State Indoor Shot Put Record (50-6) in February.

Aisling Cuffe (Cornwall) set the NY State Junior Class Record in the 3200 Meters (10:08.19) at the Loucks Games (May 7, 2010) ... Previous record was 10:20.02 by Aislinn Ryan (Warwick Valley) in 2005 (Aislinn Ryan was the Footlocker Champion that school year) ... Aisling Cuffe's 10:08.19 was the 3rd-fastest 3200 meters ever run by a NY State Girl ... Molly Huddle (Elmira ND) has fastest 2-Mile (or 3218.76 meters) at 10:01.08 in 2002 and Nicole Blood (Saratoga) ran 2-Mile in 10:10.73 as sophomore in 2004 (which converts to a 3200m time of 10:07.2) ... Note - Aisling Cuffe time of 10:08.19 is the fastest ever by a NY Girl in an actual 3200 meter race.

Karmen Auble (Warsaw Central, Section 5) raised her 8th-Grade Pole Vault Record to 10-09 at the Wayland-Cohocton Invitational on May 1, 2010 (results at: http://www.sectionvtrack.com/results/2010/outdoor.html).

NOT Accepted as a NY State Record ... Marlene Ricketts (Westbury) Triple-Jumped 42-04 at the St. Anthony Invitational (Apr 30-May 1 ... results at: http://www.just-in-time-racing.com/springresults%2010.htm) ... This would have bettered the current Triple Jump record of 42-00.5 set by Lynette Wigington (Mattituck)  in 1997 ... However, after a discussion with various people (including Larry Byrne, other record keepers, and several pit-side coaches and observers), the jump by Marlene Ricketts had the following problems ... No wind gauge, the jump was improperly marked by a non-certified helper (not by a Certified Official OR checked by a certified official who witnessed the jump), a steel or metal tape measure was not used, and the jumping pit itself was not certified as being level ... The requirements for the NY State Record in the Long Jump or Triple Jump are more stringent than for a sectional record ... Note - It is my opinion that the requirement for a wind gauge can be waved IF several coaches and officials at the event (at the time of the jump) certify the wind was "probably" legal (or close to it); also, the pit MUST be certified as being level or close to it at the time of the jump, AND the correct placement of the jump in the pit must be made by a certified NY State Official.

April 29, 2010 ... Pete Glavin 3200-3000 Premier Race (to be run on May 7th as part of the Runnin' Cadet Classic at Hilton HS )

Pete Glavin, Meet Director of the McQuaid Invitational since 2002, died of a brain tumor on Friday, April 23 .... Pete was diagnosed 16 months ago but was still able to do the 2009 meet, much to the inspiration of those who assisted according to his former coach at McQuaid, Bob Bradley.

Hilton will be running a 3200 meter race & a 3000 meter race in Pete's honor at their invitational on May 7th (see the above links for more information).
