The speed ratings below are an academic exercise at approximating the 5000 meter indoor track times to cross country speed ratings.

The ratings below are an approximation at best ... they have significant margins of error.

These ratings require some assumptions and general statistical fitting of various scenarios (and then making a "best guess" estimation) ... I used scenarios (profiles) that included Footlocker Finals and Footlocker & NXN regional races ... I used seasonal XC speed ratings for many of the individual runners (very helpful that many NY runners competed) ... I applied track form-cycles for various runners (and made more guesses) ... and the end-results are shown below.

The North Shore NY Girls finished 9th at NXN Nationals last fall ... Four North Shore girls ran the 5000 meters at Indoor Nationals, and they ran quite well (all four are underclassmen).

Lukas Verbicas set the Boys National 5000 Meter record (14:06.78) ... I was a bit concerned his approximated speed rating (206) kept coming out somewhat lower than might be expected for a national record, but the statistical fit for the majority of runners determined the final ratings ... In a post race interview (posted on ArmoryTrack), Verbicas did note that "I felt better than the last time I was here" (at the Armory for the two-mile record attempt) ... also, the overall race times are quite fast relative to a 5K cross country race, and the smaller time separation amongst runners can lower the speed ratings at the top-end.
