Boy's Section 3 State Qualifiers - Rome Free Academy - June 2, 2001 ... RFA hosted the 2001 Boy's Section 3 Track & Field State Qualifiers on a mostly cloudy, but pleasant Saturday afternoon (temperature about 60 to 70 degrees).  Athletes qualified for this meet by finishing first, second or third at sectional class meets a week ago or by achieving a specific qualifying standard in a meet with five or more schools. Event winners in each class (Class A, Class B and Class C/D) advance to State Championship Meet at Mitchel Field, Hofstra University (June 8-9).  Pat Leone and co-workers (Leone Timing & Result Services) provided excellent F.A.T. (fully automatic timing) and computerized results for the meet ... complete meet results are available from the LeoneTiming Results web-page .. from the Section III web-site .. or from Armory Track ... therefore, I am posting only partial results (listing the winners in each class) and some photos taken at the meet.

Mike Allen (Mt. Markham) had an excellent day in winning both the Class C/D 800m race (1:53.74) and 1600m race (4:28.39) as well as anchoring the Mt. Markham 4x800m relay team to victory. Kamar Elliott (Henninger) was a duel winner in the Class A 110 hurdles (14.95) and triple jump (45-2 3/4) ... according to the Syracuse newspaper, Kamar will not be attending the State Meet (he will go to his school prom instead).  Brian Mosher (Little Falls) was a duel winner in the Class C/D 200m dash (22.89) and 400m dash (50.02).

 5 Jermaine Kapolka C/D Deruyter 11.44

Final (results above) was run as combined classes while the
semis were by class ... the places above pertain to the
combined class final.
 200m
 1 Todd Acchione B Solvay 22.69
 2 Brian Mosher C/D Little Falls 22.89
 3 Jamar Reed A Corcoran 22.93

Final (results above) was run as combined classes while the
semis were by class.
 400m
 1 Mike Wicks A Liverpool 50.62
 1 Brian Baldwin B Chittenango 50.14
 1 Brian Mosher C/D Little Falls 50.02
 800m
 1 Dan Duett A Fayetteville-Man 1:58.39
 1 Pat Noonan B Holland-Patent 1:59.77
 1 Mike Allen C/D Mt. Markham 1:53.74

Races were run as separate class finals ... the approximate
400m split times for each race were (I was not in the best
position to get the splits): Class A - 57.2, Class B - 60.1
and Class C - 55.3 ... Mike Allen was very impressive in his
race (runner-up Brian McNiff (CBA, 1:55.98) also ran well).
 1600m
 1 David Cook A Auburn 4:36.88
 1 Steve Corsello B Skaneateles 4:35.16
 1 Mike Allen C/D Mt. Markham 4:28.39

Separate races were run for each class ... there were only
three runners in Class A, and only five runners in both
Classes B and C/D. In the Class A race, David Cook waited
past the 800m mark before taking control and opening a
winning margin ... the first 400m of the Class A race was
quite slow. Class B winner Steve Corsello (an 8th-grader)
ran a smart race by following other runners before making
a winning move on the final lap ... Steve may be a very
special runner before his high school career is over!!
Mike Allen controlled the C/D from start to finish.
Here are some split times:
        Class A Class B Class C/D
 400m 1:13.0 1:06.5 ????

 3200m
 1 David Masse A Fayetteville-Man 9:41.18
 2 Tim Scarpinato C/D Beaver River 9:53.71
 3 Jason Croniser B Adirondack 10:00.69
 4 Jared Tallman Cooperstown 10:04.98
 5 Weston Cross Skaneateles 10:07.30
 6 Chris Mills Auburn 10:12.73
7 Jeff Dugan West Genesee 10:13.04
8 Dan Ballard Faith Heritage 10:13.77
9 Brian Byrnes New Hartford 10:23.14
10 Kane Seamon Richfield Springs 10:24.44

Classes A & B were combined into one race while Class C/D
ran a separate race ... the results above are the top 10
places after results from both races are merged ... here are
split times from the races:
           Class A & B Class C/D
     400m 1:08.0 1:08.5
     800m 2:21.5 2:19.2
    1200m 3:35.2 3:33.6
    1600m 4:49.1 4:49.1
    2000m 6:01.9 6:06.9
    2400m 7:14.9 7:25.0
    2800m 8.28.9 8:42.7
In the A/B race, David Masse opened a 10-15 meter after 800m;
after 2000m, Masse had a substantial 25 meter lead. In the
C/D race, Tim Scarpinato opened 15 meter lead after 800m and
was never challenged in the race ... Jared Tallman ran a very
good race to finish 2nd in C/D. Jason Croniser (Adirondack)
also ran very well to be the Class B winner.
 110m hurdles
 1 Kamar Elliott A Henninger 14.95
 2 Matt Bellomo B Mexico 15.24
 3 Neil Case C/D Mt. Markham 15.51

Final (results above) was run as combined classes while
the semis were by class...Kamar Elliott will reportedly
skip the State Meet ... Andrew Marsden (Whitesboro) was
the 2nd in Class.
 400m hurdles
 1 Rich Aponte A Proctor 57.68
 1 Paul Zalewski B Solvay 57.26
 1 Jeff Morczek C/D South Lewis 57.06

In the Class A race, Jim Panels (FM) appeared to be winning
the race when he tripped over the last hurdle and lost any
chance of winning ... In the Class C/D race, Morczek barely
nipped Neil Case (Mt. Markham, 57.08) - this was a good
example where FAT finish cameras can correctly determine
the winner.
 3000m Steeple
1 Aaron Verminski A Rome Free Academy 9:51.3h
 1 Sam Morse B Camden 10:17.6h
 1 Greg Bailey C/D South Lewis 10:12.5h

There was a separate class race to determine each qualifier.
All three class winners won their respective races comfortably.
All three winners opened sizeable leads mid-way through their
races and extended the lead all the way to the finish. To be
honest, I was somewhat surprised that Aaron Verminski only
competed in the steeplechase ... but he ran so well, it's
probably a good decision. Matt Taverna (Whitesboro) also only
competed in the steeplechase as an individual event ... for
indoor track, he went to states in the 1600m and was the
section 3 outdoor leader in the 1600m.

    3) Ryan Dembkowski 4) Maurice Lobdell

but here are the approximate splits (in order) for each
team:

    3) Dominic Aeschlimann 4) Mike Allen

I don't know for certain which runners ran in what order,
but here are the approximate splits (in order) for two
teams:

  Clinton 1:59.6, 1:59.7, 2:03.6, 2:03.7
  Mt Markham 2:04.3, 2:06.9, 2:01.9, 2:02.1

I missed the start of the Class A race which was an
excellent race between Liverpool, Proctor and Baldwinsville
... only 1.34 seconds separated the teams at the finish.
