(score of 42 to 61) in the Varsity A Race of the Section 1 Coaches
Invite at Bowdoin Park ... Rhinebeck's top runner (Laura Dewitt) is
one of the best Class C runners in the State ... Pearl River

(52 to 74) ... Canastota easily won the CSC League Meet

Oct 14, 2002 ...
The Class C match-up has a new contender - Bayport-Bluepoint
(from Section 11) ... they were recently ranked #1 in the State
(Class C) by Coach Doherty on
Armory Track
... Bayport-Bluepoint was already a contender as indicated by
their speed ratings prior to the Manhattan Invitational (I just didn't
have time to update this web-page last week). In the Manhattan
Invite Varsity E race, Bayport-Bluepoint (72 pts) finished a
close second to Cornwall (66 pts, a strong Class B contender)
with Canastota fourth (125 pts) ... team-wise, Canastota
ran decently, so Bayport-Bluepoint's margin of victory
indicates they a very good team ... Bayport-Bluepoint's speed
ratings have shown nice improvement from the beginning of the season,
and their Manhattan ratings were their best to date by far (Sara
Kennedy, 116; Erin Vollmuth, 115; Stevie Bodamer, 114; Katie Anderson,
112; Deanna Schmidt, 111) ... Now for a cautionary note
(and this applies to all races at Manhattan): conditions at Manhattan
were wet, muddy and the course was only 2.5 miles (not 3.1 miles) ...
occasionally, speed ratings for Manhattan's 2.5 mile course may not be
the best indicator of a runner's ability, so additional race results
need to be seen ... that said, this year's States are at Sunken
Meadows (Section 11), and this is the home section for Bayport-Bluepoint
... Skaneateles
did not race this past weekend ... they are racing in the B1/B2
Cross-Over League meet at Phoenix on Wed (10-16-02) ... Emily Everding
may be running (she could really help Skaneateles).
Pearl River ran in the
Westminister Academy XC Invitational (Lauderdale Lakes, Florida) on
Oct 5th ... temperatures were extremely hot, but Jaclyn Gaines was the
individual race winner (19:30.9) by nearly 13 seconds ... Pearl River
finished 2nd to Spanish River (FL) ... According to the Orlando
Sun-Sentinel newspaper, Jaclyn Gaines is considering attending
University of South Florida after graduation, "This is really a big
change," Gaines said of the South Florida climate. "It's really hot,
and we were dying yesterday while practicing."

One possible four-team computer-simulation score ...
Bayport (45), Skaneateles (55), Pearl River (56), Canastota (56) ...
this simulation used all seasonal performances (not the averages seen
above or the most recent). |
Sept 30, 2002 ...
Here is the first update for the 2002 season ...
Currently, the three top ranked Class C teams are (1) Skaneateles,
(2) Canastota and (3) Pearl River ... Canastota is the
newcomer to this match-up ... Canastota is young - their top seven
runners includes three 7th graders, three freshmen and a sophomore
... here
is the current Class C comparison (current top five runners and ratings): |
Skanetateles Pearl River Canastota
======================= ======================== =======================
Julie Lynch (11) 125 Jaclyn Gaines (12) 118 Rosemary Foran (9) 115
Zandra Walton (10) 116 Bernice Patten (12) 112 Leah McDowell (7) 105
Erika Geihe (11) 102 Laura Reilly (10) 106 Kayla Curtis (10) 104
Kaela Turose (10) 81 Vanessa McKay (12) 88 Suha Kadura (9) 87
Kathleen Nyzio (11) 81 Eve Mascoli (11) 85 Katherine Foran (7) 87
In a three-team match-up, Pearl River has a
slight scoring advantage of 36-42-42 ... but this appears to be
very close ... Skaneateles runner Emily Everding has been out with an
injury - if she returns, it will be very helpful to Skaneateles. |

Comments for Girls Class C |
Skaneateles |
Some of this is a repeat
from the Section 3 Team Preview page
... Skaneateles is
the defending Class C State Champion and the favorite
to repeat as the Section 3 Class C champion ... However, they lost
some outstanding runners to graduation (Lia Cross, Simone Bras,
Cadie Cargile,
Merritt Haswell and Irena McQuarrie (Lia Cross was one of
the top Section 3 runners in XC and track throughout
her career and will be greatly missed ... Lia finished 5th at States
and 15th and Federations).
Skaneateles returns some talented runners
... Julie Lynch and Emily Everding
are on my top individual runner list
for Section 3
... in addition, other talented runners returning include Erika Geihe
(800m - 2:23), Sarah Searing (800m - 2:27), Lindsay Stanley,
Zandra Walton (800m - 2:26, 1500m - 5:09), and Kathleen
Nyzio. Two other track runners (Abby Franckenpohl and
Katie Figura) may be very good, but I don't know if they run XC ...
Skaneateles had a decent JH team last year - Stephanie Searing
finished 6th at both the Baldwinsville JH Invitational and Multi-Dual
Meet.
This year's team does not appear to be
as strong as the Skaneateles teams that won the State Class C
titles in 2000 and 2001 ... I really need to see them in competition
before making an assessment on their chances of defending the State
Class C title against Pearl River ... Coach Jack Reed is one of
the finest & most knowledgeable coaches anywhere and will have
Skaneateles ready ... but as it stands in pre-season, Pearl River is
the favorite.
|
Pearl River |
Pearl
River returns five of their seven runners from last year's
State meet ...
graduates include Pia DeSoiza (29th at States) and Lyza
Sanchez (85th at States) ... Pearl River is returning some
very good runners that include Vanessa McKay (6th at States and
33rd at Federations) and Jaclyn Gaines (14th at States and 46th
at Federations) - both are on my Top Individual
list for NY State ... other returnees include Bernice Patten,
Eve Mascoli, Dierdre Brady, and Nicole Borawski.
Pearl River also had some good
performances in track ... Vanessa McKay (800m - 2:23, 1500m -
5:02, 3000m - 11:02), Jaclyn Gaines (1500m - 5:00, 3000m
- 10:47), Bernice Patten
(1500m - 5:12, 3000m - 11:10), Eve Mascoli (2000mSt - 7:52,
3000m - 11:21) ... also, track star Erin Demchko has performed
exceptionally well in track for the past three years (2nd at adidas
Nationals in the 2000m Steeple - 6:58, 800m - 2:16, 1500m - 4:47,
3000m - 10:41), but she has not run XC (if Erin did run
XC, PearlRiver would be a solid favorite to win States).
Coach Dan Doherty is one of the very
best and top coaches in the State ... he does the State girls XC
rankings for Armory Track
in addition to the State girls track leaderboard ... Pearl River
appears to be the top Class C team entering the 2002 season. |
